is it any Good
Im running Windows Vista ultimate x64bit
On a Dell XPS420
-
No.
google Avast Antivirus or AVG Antivirus -
No.
google Avast Antivirus or AVG Antivirus -
i ran a few different kinds of a/v....mcafee, bitdefender, etc...
now using nis2008 and don't have any complaints. i also run ad-aware 2008 just as extra security....this is on vista x64
imo, most a/v's available will give you what you need. i just use nis2008 because i used bitdefender 2008 and found it very buggy and slowed down my machine a bit. -
AVG, adaware, windows defender, windows firewall and common sense. Cost? Zero. Problems? 2 years not affected.
-
it's been a Hr now and Norton is not slowing down my XPS420 the only thin is too many **** whit secure! -
NIS 2008 is very good, IMO... i have been using it for around 4-5 months now.. no problem at all.. and its not sucking up comp resources or anything neither do u feel its running in the background.. Norton has come a long way and this NIS products are very good.. I would suggest using it.. Protection is good too and detection rate is pretty high as well....
-
I've read very good reviews of Norton recently, though it still wouldn't be my choice. If you want a paid app, I'd recommend NOD or Kaspersky over Norton. fonduekid may be correct about the system resources; I know Norton has improved in that area, but I don't think it equals the other two programs in detection rates.

2nd day and is not Doing anythin i know like!
-
I personally love it on my Dell XPS M1530 with Vista Ultimate. Least annoying AV in terms of pop-ups and notifications. For me, it has no major impact on how my system runs.
Mods: Shouldn't this be moved to the Security/AV section? -
-
Is this positive? Or negative? And about what exactly? -
It's so irritating when people online talk like that, and then expect answers. Since I said this, he'll probably post that English isn't his native language and not to make fun of him.
-
either way dude, you can go with any a/v and be fine. but i do remember that bitdefender 2008 really bottle-necked my systems at startup and where very intrusive on the default settings.
there's always going to be better, but nis2008 is pretty smooth and painless, so that's why i use it. they all make you pay almost yearly, so go ahead and try one for a year, then try another one next year, etc... -
positive
when i had AVG my Internet was too slow and my boot time was slow oso.
but now is fast -
So you like Norton's....Good.
-
NOD32 is pretty much the king of low memory usage.
-
Been using NIS 2008 for sometime now. I love it. Keeps me secure, updates all on it's own, and doesn't use many resources at all.
NIS has come a LONG way. 2008 is such a vast improvement over all the previous iterations. NIS 2009 is said to be even better. -
We won't be able to upgrade for free to 09, we have to buy it again, right?
-
Yes I've heard Norton has improved some since the last several versions. However I find having the Hulk emblazoned on the software box is a bit gimicky.
I'll continue to stick with and recommend Kaspersky. Nod32 is great too but I find you can get better prices on KIS if you shop around. -
The Hulk is on the box?
Didn't know that, mine just came with my 1530 so I didn't get a box. -
There's a Norton thread every week. It's kinda funny.
-
-
Didn't know if anyone's interested, but PCMag has a review of NIS 09 up today-Looks pretty good- http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2330018,00.asp
-
Thanks @ booboo... I think NIS (and norton products in general) has come a long way, and is improving constantly..... Nice to see this
planning to upgrade mine soon from 08 to 09
-
NIS 2009 just came out and it's awesome!
-
-
And I personally would surely upgrade, because NIS is simply superb... 5 months on, no issues at all.. been wonderful.. -
They've been working hard for more than a year now to satisfy the customer... -
But its also nice to know that they have been working hard in a highly positive, productive and customer satisfying way
right from NIS as such, its efficiency etc etc., to these upgrades...
-
Hi People,
Got in NIS 2009 today (managed to get a free upgrade btw) and unlike my previous post here, today I figured out *it may* not be a free upgrade for all... *i may be wrong*.... but I was on tech support chat, asked for free upgrade options, then the guy asked for my pdt key, gave him and he saw that I had a 3 yr subscription with NIS 2008 and he specifically said, "ok we will give u a free upgrade since u have a 3 yr subscription".. so there, if anyone wants to try, good luck
Some screenshots here > first look, I was like, WOW.. this is awesome.. LOT better UI than NIS 2008.. extremely user friendly customizable features / configuring options.. particularly for people without experience on configuring AV tools... and the help file, wow... super good help file... wonderful explanations, descriptions, instructions... been up for like 3 or 4 hrs now, no issues yet, absolutely no effect on system performance, running well, activation done through NIS 2008 pdt key itself... liveupdate is fast.. program as a whole responds very fast... no hang ups or anything... automatic liveupdate is on and as is almost every other thing, except for idle time scan (which I have disabled now) but I tried with it enabled.. no problems at all.. default time for idle time scan is 10 mins.. I left it idle for 10 mins, there is a countdown clock, 10 mins later the idle time scan starts... and a slight movement of the mouse, it stops immediately, system is all back yours.. Norton recommends leaving it on, but by default it was off, and I have left it off for now..
Just thought I will get some screenshots for you wonderful NBRites..have fun...
-
One more pic *sorry I couldn't get them all in 1 post*
And I love the Norton Insight feature, I must sayit scans for common files, marks them as norton trusted or not trusted after live verification with the latest definitions.. and the next time u scan, the scan' are just faster because these trusted file' are excluded.. as for how they are marked as trusted or not, there was the method explained, like it checked for file name, file size, hash key or something and related specific parameters... it was nice
now I could understand why that NIS 2009 review was so gung-ho
Cheers.
-
Just did a complete scan (full system scan) and it took a lot lesser time than NIS 2008.. NIS 08 used to take approx. 40 mins... NIS 09 completed the scan in less than 30 mins...
and here is a screenshot of cpu / mem usage... -
That just means '09 missed about 10 minutes worth of viruses. -
-
While the memory usage seems to have gotten better, all of those graphics and "special features" just indicate to me that Norton gets its "hooks" into your system even more. Each time, over the years, I have had to uninstall Norton it becomes more and more complicated, like trying to pick gum out of your hair. AOL behaves the same way.
I'm glad you like it, though, fondue. That's why it's good we have choices. -
you've got absolutely no idea what u r talking about pertaining to NIS 09
this is truly the RETURN OF THE KING
i dear/challenge u to install the trial for just 1 day and tell me the impression u come back with
HAVE U GOT THE BALLS TO DO JUST THAT? -
only adds less than 3s to startup/boot time
less than 1s to supported browsers' launch time
installs in less than 1min
small footprint (takesup less than 5mb in ram & system resource)
--------------(only 58mb download size)
impulse update (virus definitions are always up to date)
you can ditch or say byebye to old school scheduled updates
dont get me started
NIS 09 has redefined what an internet security software shud be as we know it.
the king is back baby! -
** Update **
Ok.. So I have been using NIS 09... and its been good (and I not going to get into an argument whether Norton is better or not). For me, its been great, bots NIS 08 and 09. And I am happy.
I have a small doubt though which I noticed last night - When I run CCleaner, while trying to fix registry issues, some of the registry keys could not be fixed because Norton log' show's "Unauthorized Access Blocked" for some of them...
Again, its not all Reg keys, which just makes me wonder...
Can the security / AV / CCleaner experts try to give me their thoughts, suggestions regarding this, Please?
Ok fine.. One simply thing to do is, turn off Norton while CCleaning and it should be fine... and its not a big deal actually to do this.. But I wanna know if there is any way where you can add an exception / exclusion for this so that from next time Norton does not think its an unauthorized access...
I tried searching extensively on the web support as well as help files, but could not hit on something..
Also I was thinking if, I make the CCleaner as a trusted entity from within "Norton Insight", would this be ok? I don't know.. I have to try it though, and I couldn't till now because I still haven't figured a way to make an object as "Trusted" from withing Norton Insight
I would be very happy to hear from you guys, with any suggestions and tips. Btw, the Norton Insight thing is pretty good....
PS., Please avoid the "This is why you should ditch Norton and get something else", "this is why I kept saying Norton is a big headadche" and similar postsI don't mean any disrespect to people who don't like Norton, but its just that I don't want those opinions
I like Norton, I want to use it and I am just trying to learn more so that I can use it better and to the max
Thanks for your understanding.
