I need a new internet security software and I'm debating whether to get Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 or Norton Security 2009. Which of these two softwares do you recommend and why? Are they both compatible with Microsoft Outlook 2007 and Vista 64?
-
Norton.
Why?
1. Small and fast... really really light on system resources.
2. Picks up everything- you really do feel secure.
3. Allows for a quick scan- first time I've seen this in an anti-virus package.
4. Has smart features such as automatically adding files to a list that it doesn't keep scanning- improving performance.
5. Looks good too.
6. I don't think there is a suite out there that is as well rounded.
I mean, I really cannot ask for more. I don't know how they are going to make it better. They could make it lighter I guess..... but they really hit the nail on the head with this one. And by the way, this is coming from a Norton HATER, and I mean venomous hatred.
They won me over with this, and ah, I have basically tried all the suites out there.
As far as Vista 64/Outlook 2007, I would be very surprised if both didn't support it.
Hope that helps. -
I would say Norton as well Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 has issues on vista 64 Bit ive heard it causes BSOD and other errors. Look at these reviews on Amazon check out the 1 star reviews http://www.amazon.com/Kaspersky-KIS...sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=software&qid=1227970166&sr=8-1

both are excellent. kas does have a bit better abilities as far as detections and removal goes from experience. (i resell both so i use them both every day on customers computers fyi) nortons is great though also and i was perviously a total norton hater this new version is far better than anything they ever put out but it does have its issues as well at times. i can for sure say kasperksy is BETTER at cleaning from first hand experience. kaspersky imo has a bit better detection but also this causes a few more false positives as well. if i have to only pick one i would personally pick the kaspersky. but you really cant go wrong with either one
-
Any thoughts on Norton 360 2.0 Premium Edition? I currently have Norton 360 (the first version I guess) .
-
Kaspersky analyzes every .exe file you open, which may take up to a minute. I found this extremely annoying.
-
(From another one of my posts).
Oh, and to all you Norton bashers out there, Norton slows down your computer now as little as NOD32 (very little slow down), according to AV-Comparisons, and it also catches 4% more viruses than NOD32.
I think we have a winner. -
If I were to actually pay for an antivirus, it would be Kaspersky, unless it was the Norton Business suite, or whatever it's called. Hope it helps.

I was a Norton basher until a week ago when I tried Norton Gaming Edition. I liked it so much I bought it. It changed my mind altogether and swear by it. If I used anything else it would be NOD32.
-
Both are good security softwares.
But personally, ive always had good luck with Norton. i like the new interface, it has some options it has other dont. And its lighter on resoures than Kaspersky. -
I use NOD32
-
I use Kaspersky and always have, i like the interface and all the facilities or features. Its very good
-
I would recommend Kaspersky. You can also try Mcafee security. Both are great, the best in my opinion.
-
oh god...not McAfee-that turned my desktop PC into a dog........
I literally wanted to take it out back and shoot it.
-
What do you mean "into a dog" ? (I'm not a native English speaker). I guess you did not like it though.
I'm using McAfee Security since I bought my Dell and all I have to say is that it's pretty simple to use and my computer seems well pretected. I might just be wrong but no problem to report so far.
-
No prob
, when we say that something turns "into a dog" we usually mean that it becomes really, really slow
-
Ok, I'll remember that.
-
I am currently running the trial edition of Norton Internet Security 2009 on Windows Vista x64, so far no problems and it performs better than Windows Live OneCare. There is by the way also a Gaming Edition of the Norton Antivirus which also offers spyware protection. I haven't tried it myself. Apparently when you run an application in fullscreen mode (like a game) it will disable the Antivirus and stuff like that. Sounds cool.

Both Norton and Kaspersky are good anti-virus/security products. However the rate of detection is another thing. I'd personally go for Kaspersky. You can go Norton Internet Security (NIS) 2009 for a much faster approach. On my tests, I must hereby admit that they improved dramatically unlike their previous versions. Kudos to Norton.
In fact maybe I'm gonna upgrade to NIS 2009 ASAP. -
So whats the final verdict
Norton or Kaspersky
I read Norton has a gaming version, sounds nice
also want to know if Kaspersky
has a 360 version like - Norton 360 ?
which i think is Best to get cos will have everything
thxs -
kaspersky over nortons but nis2009 is very good. kas still has the edge imo
-
I just saw in Norton Internet Security that in the settings there is a "Full screen detection" I am guessing that this is like in the Gaming edition where it will probably consume less resources if you are running a game.
-
Thxs Guys
-
Oh, yes. I'd have to research a little, I guess. I've been given to understand that NOD32 is excellent.

I have done much research as I am debating the same issue...Norton on 1 machine or Kaspersky on 3? After reading everyones' feedback - I'm frustrated! There truly seems to be no rhyme or reason to people's experiences. Many say Kaspersky is lighter and less intrusive and uses less resources...others say def. Norton 2009. Many say Kaspersky does NOT work well with Vista 64....while others say it works wonderfully! Does Norton work with Vista 64? I dunno cause everyone says something different! Ahhh.....help!
-
I am running Norton Internet Security 2009 on my Windows Vista x64 Enterprise Edition machine. So far it outperforms Windows Live OneCare. I have to admit though that I don't like the user interface but like they say in Latin: de coloribus et gustibus non disputandem est!
-
So does Kaspersky work well on Vista 64

need to know it English, cos dont speak latin

okay i sell both to my customers.
they will both "work" in 64. the one drawback to nortons internet security is the norton web tool bar does NOT work in vista 64 this was confirmed by shane at symantec.
nortons is currently experiencing problems with their updates. it is showing failed for many users including the machines i run it on some pc's to test it. there is a patch for it but after installing it myself it worked the first time and then it did not again after that. i will get either a web scanner update failed or the virus defs failed one or the other or sometimes both. other than that nis2009 seems to be stable and runs great. but at this point imo what good is a av without updates. this is being discussed on norton forums by MANY people.
i have customers that use kaspersky on vista 64 and NOW it seems to work fine as long as you use the newest version from their web site .506 the older versions did have a few issues with vista 64. but all my people using it now say they do not have any issues,
resource wise they are similar, with honestly nortons using just a bit less. imo nortons does run just a bit faster for certain things and kaspersky for others imo.
web scanning nortons is a bit faster imo.
i like the new nortons and this is my first time dealing with them again after developing a total hatred for them over the past few releases. the 2009 verison is so much improved it crazy.
imo kaspersky has a better firewall but it is more complicated. if you set it to auto it will choose and allow or deny for you. without you having a choice based on white and black lists. now you can of course change the rules for each app easily. but in interactive mode if you are not good with firewalls it will drive you crazy with it barrage of pop ups. kas firewall though imo is better and stronger on most things from my testing than nis2009.
nis2009 also has white and black lists but is i think far easier for the average user though i dont feel it offere as good of overall protection. it is a very good firewall dont get me wrong but even moustec tested it lower than kaspersky. is is easier to just click allow and deny in nis2009.
both use a proxy "tunnel" in the internet security versions nortons does not in the regular av however. if you are not familiar with what a proxy is is is sort of like a tunnel (why i said tunnel before) where everything gets fed through it before going to your machine. i think nis2009 is a bit faster at http than kaspersky.
they both have their good and bad points. ill put it this way i run kaspersky myself on my personal systems. i did have so many requests for nis2009 i started to carry it and i think they have come farther than any other av could have in one year time.
if you have questions ill do my best to answer them. -
Norton FTW. Seriously. The 2009 version is silent, does it's job, and doesn't adversely affect system resources
-
I'm using Vista x64 and I have Kaspersky. I never even notice the thing is running even when it's doing a full scan. I've always heard good things about NOD32, but I have no firsthand experience with it. Kaspersky gets my endorsement, but continue to do research and see what you come up with.
-
To the OP: as you can read a lot of people think that NIS and Kaspersky is good, AFAIK you can download trial editions of both so why don't you give them both a try and see what works best for you?
-
Everyone says try the Trial for both
but once you try it & even after you uninstal them
they still send you the Virus cos we did not buy
-
I'm seriously considering buying myself a Kaspersky license as one is avliable to me fairly cheaply and everyone seems to think it's pretty good. I'm currently running on McAfee Internet Security, is Kaspersky better, worse, or on about the same level (In terms on detection levels and resource usage)?
Thank you.
-
Kaspersky is leaps and bounds better than McAfee. Honestly, and I'm not trying to bash anyone here, I don't understand how McAfee still lives on so many peoples' computers. I put it on my sister's computer because it came for free with her high-speed subscription, but I'm seriously considering just giving her my Kaspersky disc since it's good for 3 computers. McAfee is probably the worst on the market in how it drains a computers resources. Kaspersky and NOD32 are highly regarded, so I don't think you can go wrong with either one.
-
Awesome, thank you very much. I have never had many problems with McAfee but after reading this I think i've made my decision. I can get a 2 year license for £20 ($40) inclsuing a backup CD (Is this even needed?) which I think is a good deal.
Thanks. -
imo you are better off with a virus than running mcafee..i hate to say that but thats how i feel about them. backup cd is NOT NEEDED.. all the most current software from kaspersky is available right on their web site you dont need it on disc

Ivar on this discussion board is VERY adamant that Kaspersky is Russian Spyware...do a search for his posts and you will see that he has been saying this since 2007....he keeps claiming that is was developed by KGB and will turn your computer into a zombie...I really dont put much credence in this at all as he has not cited any evidence to back up his claim. However, since he has been so adamant about it in several posts I just wanted to ask others opinions of this seemingly crazy claim.....
-
he is out of his mind. seriously it is not spyware never has been and never will be. i resell it in my shop trust me

LOL....thanks...thought as much... -
What a remarkable confidence in a loyal FBS (post KGB) officer Kaspersky and his lab working under supervision of FSB!
The easiest explanation of all that kaspersky-mania is that Russia purposefully finances its efforts to infiltrate its product on the US market, and there are certain types of people, formerly known to be left/red,
who always have been, and always will be, who are willing to work to the hands of Russian ambitions to undermine freedoms and democracy worldwide.
More details on my point of view:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=328721 -
Man! The homeland Security Dept. is just wasting their time and resources hiring so many agents when they can just hire you to save our country from those sneaky commies!!
-
Ivar is just as smart as the monkey in his picture
just kidding hehe -
You mean thats not his picture?
BTW don't insult the monkey!!
-
Thanks for mentioning my point of view.
The fact that Mr Kaspersky works for post KGB, renamed as FSB, is "well known" and probably not so difficult to find links to this fact, especially if you are able to
search in German or Russian.
To open your computer to the "virus updates" of a software of this origin is not only endangering you, but also the community you're networked to.
Replace here "will" with "may" or "technically can" if the order will be given somewhere in Kremlin.
Moreover, just purchasing the product supervised by Russian FSB you are de facto supporting the camp it represents with your few bucks.
PS: Personal offenses like those posted above by Satyrion & firestarter are of no relevance to me. -
This is hilarious!
-

You admit that you have no proof of your "amazing" theory of this grand conspiracy against the US but yet keep sounding like a broken record, either provide evidence or just stop trolling. I thought the free world believed in "Innocent until proven guilty", so I guess you really don't believe in freedom nor democracy!!
Stop with your McCarthyism and stop looking under your bed for commies every night and block out the voices in your head. It will help.

We are on the forum here, not in the court, and I am free to speak out my opinion. In the link above I have explained why the googling based "knowledge" will not apply when we discuss such a serious matter as the relations between Kapserky lab and Russian FSB, and the potential of KAV to harm the networks of the free world: wider it spreads, bigger is the danger and the harmful potential of the product. Of course,
it is highly unlikely that this potential will be used to spy your or your neighbours irrelevant computer. This potential can and will be used only to harm US and its allies strategically. There are too many shortsighted stupid things the West have been doing regarding KGB-run Russia, and the propagation of Kaspersky "antivirus" on the markets is likely to be one of those. It is not a conspiracy theory, but an understanding of what KGB was and FSB is. -
you are correct you can speak your mind but no offense do not try to shove your ideas down other people's throats. if you feel that way dont use it. i have hundreds of VERY HAPPY CUSTOMERS that would not switch to anything else at all.. as well as kaspersky gaing tons of market share last year due to a substantial improvement on an already great product. there are millions of happy users if they were using those computers dont you think we would have known by now.. no offense at all but i mean come on.. i know personally people who have worked for the kgb who now live here and they are in fact freinds of mine and are no longer associated with them shall i ask them for you?? again no offense but as you are free to speak your mind i am as well. and i think this whole discussion needs to end. no one asked about the kgb they simply asked what is a better security app. so if you dont like kaspersky please just tell them you would not use it and you would suggest nortons or something else. that is all that really needs to be said..
-
Let me just recall the "Christmas goose" parable as a reply to your argument
(it's actually German, but I hope you have a similar one in the US).
Were it smart of FSB if resellers of their product like you would not have hundreds of happy customers ... untill the Day X when russians may decide to use your customers' computers and the backdor of "virus updates" for their purposes?
If you say "it will never harm you" about the product sponsored and supervised by Russian FSB, it is more suspicious than convincing. Better sell Nod32, bitdefender. f-secure, Grisoft AV or any other AV (i personally would not add Norton to the list) instead of distributing the product like KAV whose connection with the criminal organization like Russian FSB is known.
It is not my liking or not of KAV which dictates my post, but the knowledge about the cyberspace criminal activity run by FSB (and that goes far beyond the stealing of the credit card info and like) aimed against yours and my country, and on the occasion when I was able to trace the Kaspersky lab's involvement in the spam attack which was officially blamed in the Russian mass media on the "Chechen islamic terrorists" (sorry for the repetition here). The antivirus itself is a potential danger, not the spyware like thing which works against you since you have catched it. Fortunately, the market share of KAV is still quite limited. -
Although I really find this amusing it would be in everybody's interest if we would stay on topic, dont you agree?
