On-topic it means "anything but kaspersky".

Ok now seriously, I just downloaded Kaspersky Internet Security and it seems very low on my system's resources and very little RAM is being used. Very similar to NIS 09 although I have been reading very positive reviews on NIS 09 especially on low false alarms. Let's see how it goes for the next 30 days. -
KIS 2009 works very well so far, but i am scared that KGB will upload some virus into my epic laptop (Celeron 1,86, x3100
) and than my laptop with launch a nuclear missile and bomb away LA. Maybe i should stop auto updating it

Wow.....I'm very sorry I even brought it up...I meant no disrespect to Ivar or ayone else...so let this officially be the post that gets things back on track....when everyone is touting the great performance of NIS 09...can this also be applied to the new Norton Gaming Edition ?? Is the Gaming Edition a suite or just an AV ?? Thanks..
-
norton gaming is only av no suite and they are not making one. the only difference in the gaming edition is the removal of a few features from the reg version and the different gui. but honestly the reular version is just as fast and id rather have all the options myself and tun off what i dont want. 2009 is one of the fastest suites you will use period. i still find kaspersky a bit lighter overall but nortons does use less resources it still feels a bit laggier than kaspersky does

so would you suggest Norton 360 2.0 or Norton Internet Security 2009 over a free alternative such as Comodo + Avast! or AVG.
I'm not speaking for me, I'm decently computer savvy so I use free protection and deal with problems as they come, I'm speaking for a friend who's a casual user.
Personally I've always been pretty adamant about paying for Internet security. I mean if you google Norton or McAfee hacks you'll find holes, however reading this thread is making me question that.
You think it's worth paying 50 bucks (current sale price at BB) for Norton360 2.0 or are free alternatives fine? -
Ok... Posting in an epic thread...
I use Kaspersky for years and i believe is the best in the market and always was,as for all these KGP stories.. really laugh my a** while beeing in work, thanks guys.. -
Free alternatives will be fine though if used properly.
A strong firewall with HIPS like ComodoFW or OnlineArmor combined with Avira or Avast AV and an on-demand AS scanner like SAS or MBAM is plenty of sufficient protection.

A less talkative FW+HIPS combo is OnlineArmor.
Everyone who wants to use such a combo will have to do some reading up, using a HIPS through trial and error will result in total frustration.
Both Comodo and OnlineArmor have extensive .FAQ .and HELP webpages, they should be read before using the software.
For those who don't want to/can't use such a program, a firewall like from PCTools combined with their behavioural blocker ThreatFire might be a simpler combination.
Mind you, ThreatFire will also ask for input now and then.

Lol. I love IVAR!

I have used Norton 360 and Kaspesky AV and KIS.
I went off Norton when a number of USB autorun viruses got through in 2007. They fixed this late that year.
Kaspersky AV was fine but recently I upgraded to KIS 2009. This continually accesses the HDD. While I accept that scanning is required, the frequency of KIS is frustrating. I find no method of reducing this apart from turning off.
Im tempted to go back to Norton 360 2.0. -
that is odd. i dont have that issue at all with kis on nearly 15 machines all are fine. what are your settings you are using?
-
I've been using norton for the last year and it has caught every threat before allowing any damage to be done - this is with approx 2 TB of torrents coming down during that time and being connected to the internet nearly nonstop. I will stick with norton unless they screw up terribly in the future.
-
I am using NIS 2009, which I upgraded from the 2008 version and knock wood I haven't had any trouble with either one.
-
I ended up clicking a bad link yesterday in an e-mail and Kaspersky came blaring on to warn me. It then proceeded to completely remove the threat. That was the first time in months that I even remembered it was running in the background. It did it's job. I just thought I'd share that tidbit.

Sorry for that

A clean install seems a bit premature.
And please, DO NOT double post. It's irritating.
Cheers. -
I recently got a second-hand PC from our IT department. It was wiped clean with two things left on it; XP Pro and Symantec Anti-Virus ver. 10.
This AV seems to be working OK; updates fine and scans my Outlook emails etc... And I was told by our IT guys that it does both viruses and spyware. My question is; how does it compare to NIS09, which I've heard great things about. Also, am I ok just using this product as my only defence (with responsible computing habits, of course)?

I am using Norton once, it was built in in my newly bought laptop, it has a free registration for 60 days, after it was expired I am using now Kaspersky and uninstalled Norton from the system. Right thing to do? I hope so.
-
I've used both anti-viruses and they have there pros and cons. I personally just flipped a coin and it said heads - Kaspersky. Just remember, that no anti-virus is 100% accurate - I recommend purchasing one and make sure you have a FREE antivirus (ie. avast, avira, etc...) on hand just to verify your first scan did it's job.

I've used Norton and still using I'm really satisfied with that.
So my vote is for Norton.
Norton or Kaspersky
