I think I really should get something like encryption for my notebook's HDD.
It really wouldn't be nice to loose these files to someone I don't know.
I've got an E6320 from Dell's Latitude Sandry Bridge line equipped with a 256GB SSD, so it's pretty speedy and I don't like the idea of loosing that speed.
How much decrease in work-speed and boot-speed can it bring to encrypt the whole HDD?

I don't have an answer to your question, but I had a hard time reading "loose" and "loosing". I had to stop, think, and realize that you meant "lose" and "losing".

How about TrueCrypt?
Performance is OK (you can use the built-in benchmark to measure your CPU's speed and compare it to speed of SSD), but on SSD it can be problem with TRIM.
AFAIK only Intel's SSDs with Intel SSD Toolbox can be TRIMmed in encrypted state... -
I didn't measure my boot times, but I obviously don't recall a substantial difference. Here is how the random reads look with the machine and SSD in my sig, before and after Truecrypt full disk AES encryption. It roughly translates to 20-30% loss, in my case.
