Possible Virus Infection?

I downloaded a pack of icons from deviantart. However, I noticed that the folder reports 35 files totaling 2.99 MB while I can only see 34 files amounting to 2.23MB. Does this mean the one extra file (which I can't see even though I had disabled hiding hidden and system files) could be a virus? I deleted the file and scanned with ad-aware, avg anti-spyware, spybot, and ZA. However, nothing came up. Is there anything I should need worry about? Thanks,

 

Not a virus; it's the thumbs.db file, which contains a cache of the thumbnails, and is completely hidden from windows explorer. If you browse the folder from an ftp program or something similar you can see thumbs.db files. Basically any folder containing images will contain a thumbs.db file if you ever looked at it from explorer in thumbnail view.

 

I just downloaded the file and I noticed the same thing, but also like you my anti virus (kaspersky internet security) found absolutely nothing suspicious in the file. I trust my anti virus because if there was something wrong with the file it wouldn't have even let me download it in the first place. I agree with iza you have nothing to worry about.

 

Generally the size of the thumbs.db file is negligible, since a typical image is in the 100s of KBs, and its thumbnail is only like 10. But in things like icon packs, where there's many small images in a folder, the size of the cached thumbnail for each is actually not much smaller than the size of the original image; so you get a noticeable difference in filesize between the entire folder including the thumbnail cache, and the normal files within the folder.

 

I know about the the cache files, but also thought they were suppose to be very small - perhaps 100 kb in size. Now that you mentioned it, however, they did turn out to be cache. I guess rushed to post the question too soon. Anyways, thanks for reminding me about them.
