The closest we've had to a topic like this is "How paranoid are you?" and that was pretty fun.
I'm curious to see what software/ methods people use to stay safe.

Windows Firewall, SAS and Avira, all free. Common sense browsing of the interwebz.
Virus free for about 8 years. -

I swim naked. Even have windows firewall turned off.
^^Common Sense browsing the internet^^
Last virus was 1 or 2 years ago...that was due to a friends flash drive. -
Prepare to get flamed to hell. I'd do it myself but I'm lazy.
No windows firewall is just... let me just ask, why? -
MSE and MS Firewall, Javascript turned off on my browsers that's it for me.
-
Avira Antivir Personal and Windows Firewall do the job for me.

Experiment. You don't catch a 'cold' from being cold. The same that you won't catch a virus from not having an antivirus. They have to come from browsing malicious sites.
This is not on my critical machine, but on an acer netbook used for browsing NBR, MSN-mail, School mail, Newegg, Amazon, Facebook, Stack Overflow...and that's really it.
As you can see, none of these sites pose a threat, therefore, it's no different than having a firewall, live heretics detection, and the most locked down anti-virus library possible. -
Avira, Glary Utilities, Windows Firewall
Firefox 4.0 with latest Flash Player updates, NoScript, and Adblock+.
Don't I feel safe
-
Yes, I realize that. I went without an AV for quite a while. But no firewall? It seems silly. You lose nothing by turning the firewall on. System hardening doesn't have to use resources. I can understand not using an AV but having 0 method of protection seems needless.

MSE + Windows Firewall. Opera 11.11 (with "Enable plugins only on demand" enabled) + IE9 with the latest updates and AdSweep.
-
Just copying and pasting this from my sig elsewhere.

Router has built-in firewall if it makes you feel better
. It was really a proof of concept more than anything. The web isn't the rotten virus harboring chunk of undercooked meat every one makes it out to be.
Heck, I'm surprised I haven't seen more people implement game servers to upload trogens and keyloggers to connecting in-game clients instead of kicking the wall hackers or aim botters.

Norton Internet Security 2011
And I scan my laptop on a weekly basis or so with Malwarebytes AntiMalware. -
lol I would definitely agree with you. I had a topic a few weeks ago about running Windows without UAC and without an antivirus and it was basically pages of "You're probably already infected with 10 rootkits"
-
Avira, Windows Firewall, SAS, MBAM, Firefox with ABP, and most importantly LOCS (Lots of Common Sense
).
-
MSE and Windows Firewall. I don't think I've ever had a virus on my computers.
-
Yeah MSE and Win7's firewall is really all most people will ever need.
Here's mine:
Realtime scanner -- MSE
Comodo firewall and Defense+ HIPS
Comod sandboxing almost all internet-facing applications
MVPS host file on DDWRT router
DDWRT firewall
Spybot S&D host file on PC
UAC Max
Chrome Beta
EMET 2.1 + All internet facing applications forced to use emet.dll
Not looking to change anything. If anything I'll be taking away Comodo. -

It's right there behind the chair;
As a backup I use MSE
-
Haha, a proper first defense if I've ever seen one.

Is that so you can slice the line when something fishy comes down the network?
-
MSE, that's it. More than enough.
P.S.: Well, plus, of course, a reasonable system configuration, but that should go without saying:wink: -
Theoretically the eset pack on both my windows machines, but I don't think i have gotten around to actually installing it again. Sooo.... whatever 7 has on by default atm I guess.
-
MSE, Sandboxie, Google Chrome, Windows Firewall.
-
Do share what you deem 'reasonable', Pirx.
I have a hunch it's a tad more than just using a LUA...
-
UAC + MSE is basically enough for anyone. If you wanna get crazy you can use SRP.
-
I use *********.EXE and *******************.EXE and of course, *******.EXE.

Does UAC even count?
It's on by default. -

all of those sites can get hacked in some way and mass deploy viruses. happened before.

Windows Firewall + MSE does the work for me.

I like to try different AV's once a year, but right now:
Prevx (great)
Windows Firewall
SAS + Malwarebytes both free for occasional
Router w/ Firewall
Biggest would be most of the time I'm using Scientific Linux. -
Windows Firewall + MSE
Router w/ Firewall
Pretty simple, and relatively secure. Running 64bit also. -
Debian Linux.
-
I added Prevx today. First impression are excellent. I noticed they also have a section over at Widers Security Forums too.
EDIT: I make my living on my laptop....everyone should state how they use their system, as this could impact your decisions on security. -
Microsoft standard (MSE and Firewall) ... and common sense
cheers ... -
Kaspersky + Windows 7 Firewall... Common sense browsing
-
It'd be tons more secure with iptables.
And maybe a rootkit checker if you're extra paranoid.
-
Before I left windows on win 7 for my personal rigs I dabbled between MSE and avast + windows defender. Both work well if you do smart computing.
As for work we have an XP/server2003/win 7/linux environment and every last computer is using symantec endpoint (corporate AV). Our system runs stable and clean.
As of january I have switched back to linux for my main OS as it serves as a better tool. Just like you my laptop is a VERY important tool for work and home. I rely on my laptops to make my living possible. Without them I cannot do my job and surely wouldnt have a job or would literally have to live at work.
I have iptables.
