Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 - Great stuff.
-
MSE , Spybot S&D and windows firewall... works good for me
-
Windows 7 HP x64
Avira
ThreatFire
Comodo Firewall -
MSE with Windows Firewall set to defaults; Malwarebytes if I feel like it, and Commen Sense 2012
I use opera with UAC turned off though.
I force people that use my laptop to use XP mode. I use it myself for odd or off looking sites that I don't know about. -
Curious, what's the purpose of running in XP mode?
-
MSE, Windows Firewall, SAS
-
Also curious what this means or entails, do you mean opening XP in a vm? Or running a program in compatibility mode? Or booting into XP??
I just don't see why you'd want or need to :s -
I assume XP virtualization that's supported in Windows.
-
XP mode is a xm VM that MS offers with windows 7 to allow you to run in something a bit more robust then compatibility mode. Sadly no gpu acceleration so my CAD users are kinda upset about that.
As to the idea its safer running in xp mode thats not true. Its an XP VM and still suceptable to XP viruses and issues. -
MSE
Malwarebyte's
Good old common sense (best security measure)
I also use my N50 as a "quarantine laptop" for anything i feel a bit unsure about.
Avast!
Spypots
Common sense still in use
So far, i didn't get infected for over two years. Two infections since 2005 (2005 & 2008) due to stupidity for one and a roommate for the other.
EDIT: Should mention MSE saved me from a few malware which got on the research lab's computers thanks to some genius post-graduate students . -
MSE + Windows Firewall + Windows Restore
-
Yes, I know what XP mode is =p I said so on the other page. It's the virtualization of XP included/downloadable in some Windows 7 distros.
I just feel like it would be LESS secure. That's why I was asking. -
Well, if someone gets a virus using my laptop, I rather it happen in a virtual machine I don't care about than messing up my Windows 7 install
I have backups but still :effort: -
MSE 2.0
Comodo Free Firewall with HIPS+ enabled (well actually is the Internet Security Suite?.. it also has sandboxing and other stuff)
UAC at maximum level (with password prompt of admin account) while using a non-admin account
EMET 2.1
If I feel infected i also use AVZ + Malwarebyte's + Dr.Web CureIt -
Haha...I use Dr. Web on my G2 Android...works pretty good it seems.
-
Windows firewall. Avira.
That plus some common sense has kept me virus free for 5 years so far.
I'm definitely more on the side of hardware paranoia.
If I do need to mess with files of questionable upbringing, just do it in a completely different environment, a second hdd with the first's controller disabled. I don't endanger my OS like that yo. Keep it segregated. -
But both hard drives will have full access to each other?
-
Not with the first's controller disabled. Its basically the same as pulling the cord on the HD.
-
Avast 6 free + windows firewall = best protection 4 me.
-
I had Norton 360 a little over a year or so back, but we didn't have the money to renew it and put it on 4-5 computers. Always wanted to try Kaspersky because I heard it's excellent, but this is what I'm running with now:
AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2011
Comodo Firewall - Free (disabled Windows Firewall)
Will download Malwarebytes and Ad-Aware Free soon.
I don't recall having a virus in the 3+ years I've had this laptop and nothing has happened since I mixed Comodo with AVG. Even after decent amounts of pr0n
-
I'm back using Comodo's defense+ and firewall. I have no idea why haha I don't feel threatened at all but I like it anyway.
-
I was using Avira before and I still use windows firewall.
After I find out in this forum about MSE, I went for it and try it, to discover that I won't leave without it anymore... -
How does Microsoft Security Essentials compare to AVG, Avast!, and Avira? I'll have to search through the thread again because I don't even remember seeing it
-
Avast and Avira are full suites compared to MSE, which is just basic detection and heuristics.
So while they have a better track record they also are heavier on resources. If you want more features/ protection use those two. If you want a "set and forget" system use MSE. -
As of today:
Avast! (free)
Windows Defender
Malwarebytes (free) -
MSE and that's it
-
MSE, Malwarebyte's free (when I want a deeper search of my computer), Windows Firewall, and the following Firefox add-ons: Adblock Plus, NoScript, HTTPS Everywhere.
-
Updated as of today:
AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2011
Comodo Firewall (free)
Malwarebytes (free, granted the full scan takes hours)
Ad-Aware (free)
AdBlock Plus (free)
For my desktop build I'll probably go with Kaspersky, though. -
Malwarebytes scan takes me less than an hour for both my drives: Recovery and my OS even though I've only ran recovery once.
-
At this point I think it might be a software issue. I'm working with a laptop with less than 80GB of memory so 2-3 hours for a scan is ridiculous. If I have that time I'll do it, but until they fix that little issue (if it is, in fact, a software problem) then I'll just stick to quick scans.
-
If it's an 80GB HDD it's probably very old and slow.
-
I didn't realize my laptop is 3 1/2 years old, damn. I guess those upgrades really do work, haha. But if that's what causes it then I guess I can't complain. Time for a new hard drive!
-
I'm not saying it's absolutely the issue. But it could be.
-
> Comodo firewall
> Avast Free
> MAB -
Just set up my new machine yesterday. For this one, I went with Avast Free, Malware Bytes, and Windows Firewall.
-
Wow, the search function on this site sucks . Couldn't recall what the name of this thread was and typed in "security setup." Wasn't on the list -_-
Anyway, a question. CCleaner usually deletes my passwords and usernames that Firefox so kindly keeps for me. Which of the boxes should I uncheck in order for this not to happen anymore? The thing is I would love for my passwords and whatnot to be the only thing left over by CCleaner, but I have a feeling if I uncheck the category they're in I'll not be deleting a whole bunch of other stuff. -
If you tell it to just not delete the passwords that's all it won't delete
-
Checked:
Internet Cache
Internet History
Cookies
Download History
Session
(my bookmarked pages are always remembered - this is a good thing)
Unchecked:
Site Preferences (I think this is "Type the letter 'f' in the URL and 'Facebook' appears," but I think that deletes with my Internet History)
Saved Form Information
Saved Passwords
Compact Databases
Is remembering my passwords considered a cookie? Software confuses the hell out of me
-
Cookies aren't passwords.
-
You're a man of few words, Hungry Man
I'll search elsewhere for more specifics. Thanks, nevertheless. -
Your cookies can store info about sites like "this user is logged in" or "this user has X in the shopping card"
clearing your cookies may even log you out of websites
but your browser will still remember and be abel to autofill those passwords -
I only have MSE, does the job quite well.
-
i considered posting my security specifications, but I'm too paranoid to have them known
-
Damnit!
Current set-up:
Microsoft Security Essentials
MBAM
Next set-up:
No A/V
MBAM
Firefox. Addons: Ad-block, WOT, No script, Sandboxie. -
Yep, MSE has been my sole companion for a while now.
-
CIS v5.5 with SpywareBlaster and SASPro and MBAM on demand, and I've shut off UAC
I've been very impressed with CIS. It's a powerful set of programs with slick GUI and the Firewall and D+ are lot quieter than I thought they would be. -
CIS
SAS + MBAM + HitmanPro v.3.5 for on-demand scanning
SRware Iron browser with JS disabled with WOT and Disconnect extensions
MVPS hosts file
EMET 2.1 -
Just wondering Hiker, why still Firefox 3.x?
-
nobody has mentioned privoxy. it's a bit aggressive but i like it.
-
Forgot to update that part of my sig.
Post your security setup
