I just bought an HP dv5-1000us from Staples (Vista Premium w/SP 1 and 64-bit), and I bought Norton 360 v2.0 with it. I haven't even unpackaged the laptop yet though, and Norton is not yet installed, because I wanted to know if I should keep it, or go with something else, whether it be freeware or not. Whatever works best with Vista I guess, I have no experience with this OS yet.
P.S. Please try not to be biased with opinions, thanks.

From what I've heard, N360 sucks up alot of resources, if this doesn't conflict with what your using your PC for, than it's probably not a bad AV.
-
I have no idea if it would conflict a lot.. I'm basically using my laptop for everything: school stuff, music, videos, video-editing, light gaming, internet surfing, etc..

Norton is pretty good these days.. Btw, what are your system specs like?

Might cause lag with games and video editing. If your running a decent processor (2.0 ghz or higher) and at least 3 gigs of ram, it shouldn't be to much of an issue.
You will get a lot of useful info here: http://reviews.cnet.com/internet-security-and-firewall/norton-360/4505-3667_7-32330411.html -

Give it a 15 day trial, if you dont like it/it causes your problems, take it back, if it works great, completly uninstall the trial, than install the FV. -
I saw in user reviews that it's a pain to uninstall, unless it's different with the trial version?

Is 360 newer or older than Norton 2008?

If you just purchased Norton 360, chances are you have the latest version- Norton 360 Version 2.0. This and Norton Internet Security 2008 were released around the same time.
The difference between 360 and NIS 2008? 360 takes a more hands off approach to security, the program does more automatically (like system tune ups and such) than NIS does. Also, 360 has integrated system backup and restore functions, as well as a simplified user interface.
Speed wise, Norton has come a long way, they now take non essential parts of the suite (like parental controls and anti-spam) and make them available as an add-on pack. That way, you get to control just how much of the suite gets installed. I don't use it personally, but when my Aunt upgraded to 07 and up, I saw a noticeable difference.
I would do what the others suggest-run the trial to see how you like it. -
I had Norton 360. Lagged my computer, never found an attack or infection, and never was up-to-par with what wanted to ask for Internet access (One day Firefox wanted Internet access..it opened fine, next day, wanted access again and finally Norton asked me if it was ok).
I don't know a whole hell of alot about AV's you have to pay for, but if you want a good free one, my opinion is Avast! for you AV, and COMODO Firewall for your...well..you guessed it, your Firewall. I use both of these, and they are..IMO, top notch. Avast has caught a few infections and attack, and COMODO even asks if it's ok to open a Notepad! Sounds tedious I know to say (Allow), but it has a memory feature, so it wont ask you again.
The majority of my class-mates at my school (ITT Technical Institute), I would say 85% of them use either one or both these programs...hell, even some of the teachers do aswell. It is definitely worth looking into. -
Again, to stress on what I said before....
I had the similar, but it was NIS 2008.... and my friend got his with Norton 360.
And I would say, YES, go ahead and use it. Norton is not like before. It has changed A LOT. Its not lagging or sucking your system performance anymore (I have already mentioned this in other threads too). And its detection rate is pretty good and on par with others. I have my system super clean with NIS and so is my friend with this 360.
As for me, I find the new user interface useful and friendly.. I am not a comp. tech professional, but it was easy even for me to configure and set it up well.
So, YES, I would recommend going ahead and using it and giving it a try. I am sure, you would be surprised (as I was) to find Norton has come a long way and its a lot better now with almost negligible effect on system performance.
PS., and NO, I am not an employee of Norton neither am I their share holder or anything
-
I agree with the post above. Go ahead and give Norton a try. You have absolutely nothing to loose. And everything to gain...
If you don't like it after using it...than simply uninstall and try another AV.
Personally, I recently changed from AVG free to Avast home edition(also free).
I really like Avast. AV is very much a choice the user must make.
Either you like it or you don't.
Cheers,
Theo -
From all I've read uninstalling Norton is never simple. With better free products out there, why bother?
Purchased new laptop w/Norton 360, should I stick with it?
