Are registry repair programs like pctools' registry mechanic worth it?
-
no.............
-
oh definitely. the good folks who write them need to sell all they can.
-
Nope.
Registry cleaners don't really do anything for system performance.
However, it is good to run Ccleaner for example and clean out old registry entries from drivers that you removed when you want to replace them with new ones (this is only done in order to avoid potential driver conflict issues).
And I would say that Ccleaner is the only program I would entrust with my registries as I never had issues with it on any computer.
Plus it's free... everything else has been a hit or miss. -

I have a registry program as part of my malware suite. It gets run with the rest of my monthly maintenance with no issue to speak of in the two years I've used it. I do however disable the disc maintenance that comes with the suite since I have PerfectDisk which does a much better job.
-
Well that is certainly a hearty endorsement there. Software that causes 'no issue to speak of' is good. Software that actually does something useful is generally considered better. What useful has this registry program done?
-
You can form your own conclusions.
-
Yes, they are. I would never pay for one nor do I recommend paying for one but I do recommend using something like Ccleaner. Not everyday nor every week but perhaps after uninstalling a program. However, I only recommend Ccleaner.
-
Only CCleaner and only if you can make an informed decision about the things CCleaner shows you. Otherwise, forget it and move on.
-
Actually I can't. At least not without evidence.
