IMO, Defender is nice because it's included for free, has both real-time and on-demand scanning, is unobtrusive, doesn't noticeably affect performance (except during scans), and doesn't flag a lot of harmless stuff like cookies.
But... I recommend having Malwarebytes or SuperAntiSpyware around in case you need a second opinion. I also recommend an antivirus program... Avira is a good free one. -
WoOT! That AV program works great!

Don't for get about Avast (which is free) and I personlly enjoy spybot. They both seem to get the job done.

A firewall with HIPS and Program Control is a big plus. If unusual program actions are detected ASAP the spyware does not get a foothold and does not need to be scanned for after the fact.
Spyware programs?
