My university is offering Symantec AV free for us, but I have AVG Free 8 already. I've never been infected, but I'm just wondering: which 1 is better at finding viruses in your opinion?
And how come Symantec AV only comes from volume licensing (schools, companies, etc.) whereas Norton is normally for home?

I think both are good these days... though if you have AVG free already, I guess you could just stick with it...

You can check the test results from AV-Comparatives yourself, for on-demand scan results here and for pro-active scan results here.
Both times AVG outscores Norton AV. Mind you, the home product Norton is tested, not the company/high-volume version Symantec AV.
Also, AVG pro-active scan results were accomplished with AVG Antimalware which is now incorporated into AVG8, also in the free version.
Why don't you wait a couple of days when some class mates have installed Symantec AV Corporate Edition.
Then you can ask them about the memory resource usage and their overall experience.
Btw, the naming is a marketing decision I guess.
Cheers. -
Install the symantec AV from your university. The corporate edition has very little resource usage and is also more effective. The scan engine of the corporate edition is totally different from the Norton home edition.
Symantec AV or AVG Free 8
