Avast, the market's leader for the past five years, has fallen to #6.


Antivirus programs from Symantec, ESET, and McAfee are today's most popular Windows-based anti-malware products, according to usage data gathered by enterprise software vendor OPSWAT.

For more than five years, OPSWAT has been collecting data and publishing monthly market share reports for the Windows anti-malware market.


ONE VENDOR'S RISE AND FALL
And another sign of a healthy market is the fact that it never stands still. Over the years, the Windows anti-malware ecosystem has been in full flux. Vendors have often switched at the top, and market shares have risen and dropped dramatically.

Nothing shows this better than Avast's rise and fall through the rankings in the past four years.

An OPSWAT report from January 2014 had Avast with a 13.2% market share, way above its competition. That grew to 15% by December 2015. Its rise only continued in the next two years. By June 2017, Avast had amassed a whopping 20.48% of the market, thanks to its 2016 acquisition of fellow anti-malware vendor AVG.

Kinda surprised. Ever since Windows Defender became a thing that's been my go too. It's clean and isn't reminding me to upgrade to the paid Pro edition.

Last time I had another anti virus was when I was using an ASUS laptop. McAfee was preinstalled and I had to uninstall it five times. Everytime I turned the laptop on it was reinstalled. Like a bloody virus.

Avast always stopped working when I used it back in the day. It would be fine for a month or so and suddenly would freeze anytime it would do a scan. And it was McAfee because it was a bear to uninstall. Why is that a recurring theme?

 

Avast has been in Microsoft's spotlight a long time. And I expect it will continue. As well with further decline in the ranking. People are fed up with malware/antivirus company that go own roads.

If you are using older versions of Avast or AVG Antivirus, Microsoft has placed a compatibility hold that will prevent you from upgrading to Windows 10 1903 or Windows 10 1909 until you upgrade to a newer version of the antivirus software.

This is not the first time Microsoft has place compatbility holds on AVG or Avast version, as people have reported [1, 2] similar block as far back as August 2019.

I do not use Avast and AVG rubbish for anything. Nasty anti-malware malware.

 

I don't have anything on the bench machine except defender, and that's turned off. And even on my other daily machine there's that.

 

I only use Defender on my daily driver crash dummy Windoze OS X installations. I use nothing on my Windoze OS X and Windows 7 benching OSes. Any money spent on third-party security suites is like flushing it down the toilet. Defender is good enough and none of them are worth spending money on. Defender is easy enough to turn off... just one click using Defender Control.

 

Avast make a good job pushing themself down on the anti-malware market share. Target is now maybe within 20th place. If not the 50th place and perhaps out of business. They can of course still be in business if they make the core product freeware and hope some still will use their products...
