Title says it all.
Avira
or
Avast
Free Versions and why?
-
simple! AVIRA AntiVir FTW!
I personally use NOD32 but for a free AV, nothing beats Avira!! -
Avira AV 9..
Why? Because it's free..and it's a F T W
Trust me, bassflow!
Cin -
Haha you know I trust you Cin, I'll wait for some more replies, but Avira is winning
-
Poll needed. XD!
I would suggest Avira Antivir Personal 9! It is the strongest and lightest resources FREE AV currently!
Avast! 4.8 Home Edition = Have more features
Avira Antivir Personal 9 = Ultra high detection rate -
I don't know how to add a poll... lmao.
Ok looks like I'll probably get Avira but just wnna see how this thread turns out! -
Do you get it from here?
http://www.free-av.de/en/trialpay_download/1/avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html -
I vote Avira as well! The link is correct for the free version, although if you are interested in the paid version or other security software, check out this link: http://www.avira.com/en/pages/index.php
-
I've tried both and my vote is for Avira due to its higher detection rate and better user interface. I tried to like Avast but I just couldn't get used to its UI.
-
Avira.
/////// -
Avira has great detection, but sometimes annoys you with false positives.
-
I like avast but its scanner moves at a snails pace. It takes like 2 years for a virus scan to finish. But it has a boot up scanner which is good but is also super slow.
-
And..., as it should....Look's like Avira is the FTW
Go with Avira AV 9, you will like it!
Cin... -
Ok I got Avira but should I pick Low,medium, or High detection?
-
Tinderbox (UK) BAKED BEAN KING
Give me AVAST anyday.

SpacemanSpiff Everything in Moderation
I use Avast, and am happy with it. But I admit I have not tried Avira.
-
Rumour said low detection rate would have lower false positive report/detection and high detection rate would have higher false positive report/detection.
For the sake of safe, I choose HIGH.
Lastly and again! Avira Antivir Personal 9 FTW! -
Wanna swap??
lulz.
Cin... -
Both are equally as good and capable to ward off the nasties. My vote goes to Avast because it blocks websites that it senses could pose a risk to your computer. It's also checks MS Outlook when you start Outlook.
I have used Avira in the past but it has issues with updates. Every computer (total of 4) I have installed Avira, it takes forever (15-30minutes) to connect and download from their server. Many here on NBR claim to have no issues but I guess i'm one of the unlucky few. In fact if you uninstall Avira it will ask you why and to no surprise "updates" is one of the reasons, go figure.
I have no such problems with Avast OTOH. One thing I do like about Avira is the clean and intuitive interface. Anyway you can't go wrong with either one. -
Do you guys select all threat categories or default only?

I never recommend avira free to anyone simply because avira lacks basic self defense protection. It is too easy to shut down avira services so imagine what a undetected virus can do to it.
I tested the latest version a few weeks back and I was able to shut it down by killing the avira services in memory IMO too easy. Avast on the other hand if you try to do the same thing you will get a nice "access denied" message. Avast will even warn you when you try to uninstall it; it will ask you if you initiated the uninstall request and ask you to confirm it.
Detection rates are nothing if your antivirus cannot protect itself. -
But as far as the free versions between these two, after using both, I still give the edge to Avira because it's lower on resources (quite a bit lower IMO) and the UI is way more intuitive and functional, although granted that's just a subjective observation.
But I am optimistic about the upcoming Avast 5. It promises a much lower resource footprint, a much higher detection rate and a much improved UI (based on the few shots I've seen from the pre-beta). -
Ticking the option will give you the same nice "Access denied" message if you try to terminate Avira processes in Task Manager.
Cheers. -
FAIL
i know i love it .....being right that is -
I used Avira too. But 1 weak point is it doesn't scan mail. T.T
Avast have mail scanning function. -
i just don't open spam mail or the one from random people that claim to have pictures of my no existent kids
-
. Also IMO this option shouldn't be off by default because a person who knows nothing about it will continue to use avira without knowing it can be shutdown easily.
So as Mr.Moo said it is a FAIL but not the kind of fail you want!
I can't wait to try avast 5 -
LOL!
Some even worst. Said that you're a -star. LOL.
Some were just blank mail. Last time, I remember I open a blank mail, my email has been hacked and the msn started to send weird messages and virus links after that. After changing the password, it is OK already.
If Avast! 5 claims to be more powerful and light resources. Then, I would go for it.
Currently, my Avira Antivir Personal 9 have no problems. -
However, Avira will still scan every read and/or write operation, depending on the settings you use, so every downloaded file/email that is written (on to your HDD) will still be scanned.
Care to expound how malware could achieve this? If you can, I bet Avira is willing to pay you serious money.
I agree though, that this option should be a default setting. -
But the bottom line is as long as the option is there to disable self protection then there will always be the chance that it could get shut down and as you notice the protection is off by default. What avira need to do is make this self defense built in so that it cannot be turned off or tampered with in anyway without the user knowing. -
I was tempted to install Avira and Avast but did not want the risk of infecting my USB flash drive so I opted to format his computer instead. It fixed the problem after the format and fresh install.
I can't think of anything other than malware or viruses that could cause that kind of damage. -
I heard that Avira Antivir Personal 9 have a special feature that it would stop any kind of SPYWARE(no matter new or old or just release) as long as Avira read or sense it is SPYWARE type of programs or files.
I love this feature very much. But it also lead to many false positive. -
I go Expert Mode - General - Security - but there is no Protect Processes... -
-
It's not available for 64 bit systems yet apparently
-
avast ftw 10 char.
