I have not tried Online Armor since it has been available for Vista, but it received a great score from Matousec: http://www.matousec.com/projects/firewall-challenge/results.php

I installed Online Armor after using Comodo's free firewall for a while. Tried it out a little and then switched back to Comodo. Both firewalls had great reviews, but I liked Comodo's interface a lot more. idk. It seemed more professional to me. I don't really think you could go wrong with either though.

    Hi People,

Can someone please tell me if its possible to disable the integration of SpybotS&D with Windows Security Center?

There is this process SDWinSec.exe, and I want to know if its possible to disable this integration? Or is there anyway to chose whether to have it integrate or not, with the security center? (As far as I understood from reading around, it happens by default I guess, when installing SpybotS&D).

Finally, is it recommended to leave it as it is or is it ok to turn off this Spybot security center integration feature (if its possible)?

    Thanks guys. Cheers.

Can I use COMODO Firewall with Norton IS 2009? I just have to disable NIS 2009 Firewall right?

    Hey Gonwk,

Thanks for your reply. I saw this thread, thanks.

But my question was how to disable this integration with the security center? I mean, the spybot security center integration was fine, no problems, and SDWinSec.exe starts automatically and all the related stuff (unlike the user with the error in that link!).

What I wanted to know was is it possible to disable this integration? Or is it part of SpyBot? Was just curious.

    Thanks again, mate.

    Hi Sam,

Have you tried disabling the Friewall in Norton IS 2009?

I did see some posts (on other Forums) that Norton IS does ask for remvoal of "Zone Alarm"!!! Nothing about CFP though.

    So ....

If you have NIS 2009, you might was well use all its components. It's quite good.

    Hi folks,

I was just trying to update my Antivirus softwares ... and while I was trying to update my Comodo Firewall Pro (freeware) from 3.0.25.378 to the latest one 3.5.54375.427 ... something interesting happened ...

    1) It also has Comodo Antivirus in the .exe program!!!
So it asked me if I want it ... I opted not to install it.

Q1: Is Avira still the BETTER choice? Or should I have opted for Comodo Antivirus?

BTW, I kept AVIRA instead of Comodo!

Q2: While installing Comodo Firewall portion it gave me 3 options and had BOLDED the 2nd choice. Should I have installed

    - Choice #2: Comodo Firewall with Optimum Proactive Defense OR
    - Choice #3: Comodo Firewall with Maximum Proactive Defense+

BTW, I went with Choice #3.

Q3: Do I need to install these other 2 Comodo Apps ...
    - Comodo SafeSurf 1.0.0.6
    - Comodo Memory Firewall 2.0.4.20

    Thanks,

    G! :)

    @ Gonwk,

Comodo has integrated it's new anti virus into a security suite; CIS.
The AV part is still in it's infancy, there's no heuristics f.i.
Q1; Staying with Avira (at least untill the AV part has matured) is the smart thing to do.
Q2; Choice nr. 3 will give you the most protection.
SafeSurf and Memory Firewall are protection tools against buffer overflow attacks. You don't need to install them, they're just extra protection.
With SafeSurf you will also install a Comodo toolbar so I'd choose Memory Firewall from those 2.
Check here for more info on CIS.
    Cheers.

No you don't need to install those two programs.

    For me, I use:
    Avira AntiVir Free
    ThreatFire
    Comodo Firewall without Defense+

Avira is a better choice than Comodo AV. Comodo AV is still new, no heuristic engine yet, and their detection rates are still not near Avira yet.

    Hi Z,

How does it handle "False Positives"!?!? Does it kill those too in a swipe or does it give you item-by-item choice?

The reason I ask is because I have a Freeware Program that shows a false positive ... shows as an "Adware" ... and I know it ain't so ...

    Thanks,

Are the things it picks up stuff that the regular scans (SAS, MBAM, Avira, etc) not detect?

Well I guess I could also just give it a shot and find out :p

Also, where did you hear about this program and are you sure it's legit/safe?

lol yes its very safe and yes its legit. a lot of the things it finds and can get rid of many av's overlook or simply cant delete. like the rouge antivirus programs that tell you to buy this program because you have malware etc... a lot of av's try to get rid of those but cant. malwarebytes does a good job at those but even that has been unable to remove certain ones. this has killed almost anything ive thrown at it (of the types of things it is meant to remove) its a great program many people all over use it and recc it even over at wilder's etc.. its been around for a while. its safe 100%

jotti is fantastic in case you are unsure what is or is not a virus you can see what almost every av engine thinks of the file to figure out if its really a threat or not

    Thanks Baserk!

I also get my info from AV-Comparatives.

Over the years, I've used over 8 different AV programs at different times. It seems that each one has its greatness which comes and goes over time.

Currently, I use Avira free AntiVir and Comodo 2.4. I tried early Comodo 3 but had issues with it when it first came out, so I returned to 2.4 and have been happy with it.

At present, I don't believe there is any single "does all" package.

I prefer to individually choose the AV, Anti-spyware, and firewall. That way I can get the best of each category.

Edit: Did it again from a different link. I think I'll pass on this program.

If you also use Windows Defender, you have a complete package.
Whether it's enough depends on your needs/skills, personally I like to have a HIPS also, like in the Comodo or Online Armor firewalls.
An (on-demand) antispyware program like SAS or MBAM is recommended.

Do you mean both in 'standard' configuration? No, that would be a bad idea.
You should only use a second AV program as an on-demand scanner.
    Cheers.

JUST GOT MY NEW LAPTOP'S (HP dv5 with Windows 64bit Vista)
    NORTON END FREE TRIAL (finally)..
and Have SWIITCHED TO THE FOLLOWING Protection Combo:

for AV: Avira Antivir Personal (free ed.),
for antimalware: SAS and Comodo Bo,
    for firewall: Windows Firewall
    Also Windows Defender and CCleaner

I was gonna download the Comodo Firewall as i heard it was recommended for 64bit and one of the very few options and perhaps the only free option but the download is now packaged with the comodo antivirus at the main site. plus i read that it was TOO strong a firewall as in limiting your daily use and very bad user reviews at download.com because of some sort of problem for uninstall. So i'd figured i'd ask people who really now theyre stuff (u guys) for advice on whether i should go for it or not..

    THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Would the fact that it now comes with its own antivirus affect avira in any way? or am safe with just the windows protection?

I'm also actually wondering about this. Now that you can't install the Comodo firewall separate from the Comodo AV software, and assuming you want to continue using Avira as your primary AV, will there be problems running both Comodo and Avira? Or is there some way to disable the Comodo AV upon installing it? If not, I'm thinking it would be better to switch to Online Armor as my firewall.

The Comodo Firewall has a learning curve indeed.
It's not just simply installing it.
When you want to use the HIPS, Defense+, make sure to read the help files.
Make sure you know how to use the HIPS and how to make rules for the different programs.
Again, the help files have all the answers and the Comodo forum has even more information of course.
If you don't want to learn how to use the Defense+ HIPS then don't install it.
You will still have a simple firewall with reasonable protection.

^&^^When installing Comodo Firewall (and Defense+) with the current Comodo Internet Suite, you will have the option to install the AV part or not.
If you don't install the Comodo AV there can't be a conflict with your current AV of choice.
    Cheers.

You might want to read some other pages of this thread, in particular the first page, where some of the best free software in each category is listed.

    As for my suggestions:
Avira antivirus (which you've said you plan on installing)
    Comodo firewall
    SuperAntiSpyware

If you wanted even more protection, you could install ThreatFire. I found that overkill for me, so it largely depends on the person how much security you should install. Some people would even recommend less than what I listed, but for the average user, the list I gave should be sufficient.

    Hi robvya,

    How is the lappy running!?!?

Robvya ... Go to the 1st page and read BASERK list ... you can pretty much choose one of each BUT for 64-bit.

On my Vista 64-bit have the following and the experts here have A-OKed it ... you can try this combo ...

    - Avira Antivirus
    - Comodo Firewall Pro (with Defense + option)
    - SAS
    - MAM (on demand Scanner)
    - Keep your Windows Defender up-to-date.

the above is more than enough ... but since I am a software junky I have also installed "WinPatrol" on mine just to see how it works.

    Hope this helps!

    G! :)

Comodo with Defense+ still causes problems for me on XP Pro. The Pending Files gets clogged with thousands of entries and slows down my computer. The funny thing is, I couldn't clear the Pending Files. I would try and they just pop back up with another thousand entries added. I guess I'll go with Comodo with Threatfire though I don't like PC Tools.

If you're wondering why I'm not using Online Armor, I had a problem with 3.0. With OA installed, my wireless network speed would decrease to 1 Mbps.

    Hi jin,

The only reason I am on Defense+ ... is because I can not use Threatfire instead ... since I am on VISTA 64-bit and Theratfrire I guess still does not support the X64.

    Hi all

Could you guys please help me out my freind is currently running the latest
Norton's on his thinkpad i have been told Norton's slows your system down
and he needs all the performance he can get he is running vista basic with
1GB ram and a 3rd Gen processor (celleron or whatever it is)

Would it be a good idea to replace Norton's with a few free programs all he does is web browse and music downloads ext. if so which ones would be the best.

It probably would be better for him to replace Norton with other software if his resources are that limited. I used to use ZoneAlarm, which I don't think is as resource-intensive as Norton, and when I switched my security software to free ones, I noticed a big speed increase. The very first page of this thread does a nice job of summing up the best free programs in each category (I wonder if people even look at that page sometimes).

If you want to know what I currently use on my laptop, I use Avira AV, Comodo Firewall (without their AV), and SuperAntiSpyware. I think that should be sufficient considering the description you gave of how your friend uses his computer.
