Thanks for the suggestion, maybe I'll go back to installing CFP to see if I have more luck with it. (I was using CFP without D+ when it affected my notebook's startup time kinda badly) :(

I was searching for comodo firewall v3 but on the site it only comes with the entire suite (antivirus + firewall), does anyone know where to find only the latest version of the firewall?

    Thanks!

You can download it from Comodo's site and then just choose to install only the firewall.

    Thanks for the firewall links.

two more questions...I haven't found those in the programs listed...

What do you all think about mcaffee site advisor.
http://www.siteadvisor.com/ Is it a system hog (most important..) and do you use it?

And what about a software called Secunia software updater, good or bad?
    http://secunia.com/software_inspector/

    Thanks.

Instead of the McAfee program, I've listed SpywareBlaster.
Once installed, it doesn't use any resources.

Secunia PSI is a very handy tool to make sure that, not only your OS is patched, but (almost) all other programs also.
PSI will warn you whether f.i your Java is outdated or whether a patch for Word is available.
Keeping your software up-to-date is a must and this is where Secunia comes in handy.
Whether you want to use their online version OSI or the installer PSI is up to you.
The PSI installer version will add an entry in your startup program list.
    Cheers.

AVG is driving me nuts. I paid for a version of the suite and it stinks. The new free version is better. Go figure. Avira is a very good free anti virus. :)

Yes, if Comodo firewall didn't disable the Windows firewall automatically, you must do it yourself.

I just got a new HP dv5t. It comes with a 60 day Norton protection, which seems legit. should I download another anti-virus program like AVG now and keep it disabled until the free Norton version runs out?

The trial version of Norton is legit. Do you intend on keeping Norton past the trial period (purchasing it)? The way I see it, you have a few options...

    1. You pay for and keep Norton
    2. You uninstall Norton right away and use free alternatives (why not get used to the new programs now?)
    3. You keep Norton until the trial runs out, then use free alternatives (why skip on something free?)
    • There is no point to installing software you're not going to use right away, so don't install them until you plan on using them. Plus, often they can interfere with what Norton is doing and have less than desirable effects.
    • Again, make sure to use the Norton Removal Tool when you finally get rid of Norton
    • Download the free antivirus, antispyware, and firewall programs you want to use and start using them

If it's the beeping that results when the scanner or the guard encounters a problem which requires a decision by you, then you can disable that in the options menu. Click "configuration" and make sure you have expert mode checked. From there, choose "Actions for concerning files" under either Scanner > Scan or Guard > Scan and uncheck the "Acoustic alert" option.

AVG is horrible for me. Every time I try to use it it never updates and I get errors. Blue screen. Now its just Avira and Avast for me. Spysweeper is great but costs you $24.

Superantispyware is great. My friends computer had some nasty antivirus 2009 badware running on it and was removed quite nicely. The other anti spyware(AVG) just passed right over it.

Do you have real-time protection disabled in one of those?
It's very dangerous to use 2 AV's with standard configuration because they will highly likely interfere, resulting in less protection.
So uninstall one of them but if you know how to use two of them the right way, then nevermind.
    Cheers.

Is the HIPS in the Online Armor firewall equivalent to having a realtime spyware program running (like Windows Defender).

While being two very different programs with different approaches, I think it's safe to say that OA HIPS can offer stronger defense than Windows Defender.
OA HIPS offers more granular control over what's allowed to run on your computer and how.
A HIPS won't flag malware though; it doesn't give you a warning that Trojan XYZ or Worm ABC has been found.
It will give you warnings that such malware wants to perform a potentially dangerous action but you will have to understand/notice that yourself, that what it wants to do is potentially dangerous and therefore possibly malware.
So, in order to use OA HIPS, get yourself acquainted with how it works and then you'll have a very, very strong layer of security.
In the meanwhile, I would keep Windows Defender running until you're sure you don't need it anymore.
    Cheers.

OA works with 3 different program categories.
The Trusted ones are known to OA, these can be installed without any hassle.
The Untrusted ones are deemed malicious by OA and they will automatically be blocked and OA will issue a warning/pop-up.
The Unkown programs, those that have not been examined (yet) by OA, will also issue a warning/pop-up and there you will have to decide yourself to either Block or Allow them.

You should start with the OA Help File, it even includes video samples of how OA works.
Also, the OA forum for the free or paid version offers extensive help.
    Cheers and have fun.

PLEASE DON'T DOWNLOAD AVG IT IS TERRIBLE. I GOT THE VIRUS ANTIVIRUS 360 AND IT DIDNT DETECT. AVAST DETECTED IT.
THEREFORE AVAST IS MUCH BETTER. well that is in my opinion.

Anyway, I wouldn't recommend AntiVir. When I tried it, it would always freeze when making updates and it never finished scanning my computer.

Like jtan198 wrote, it's unlikely Avira AntiVir is the culprit.
Have you used another AV previously?
If so, it could be that remnants of the previous AV interfere with Avira.

    Avira AntiVir Free
    Windows Defender Free
Zone Alarm Pro (I have a licence for one year) or maybe comodo free is better?

If you have a ZA Pro license, use it.
Avira AV free is excellent for AV and also somewhat against spyware and Win Defender can be set up as a HIPS, offering extra protection through WinDefender>Tools>Advanced Microsoft spynet membership.
If you also use Malwarebytes'Antimalware (free version) for a weekly malware scan you'll have a decent setup.
    Cheers.
