Hi guys..
I wonder if Rising Antivirus Free and Rising PC Doctor are good? It seems rather interesting![]()
-
I'm looking for an alternative to Comodo Firewall for my brand new installation of Win 7 32 bit. I found Comodo to be a bit too intrusive and resource-hungry. Could anyone recommend a lighter firewall that still gets the job done?
-
1. Outpost
2. Online Armor
These are as light as COMODO, though. -
Hi folks,
I was wondering if anyone else has experienced what just happened to me today ... I usually download Avira Definitions Updates manually and then update my "Avira AntiVir Personal 9 Free Version" ... couple of ODD things happened ...
1) The Avira Definitions Update has always been in this format "ivdf_fusebundle_nt_en.zip" ... but today all I could find were these 2 files ... "VDF (multiple VDF)" and "iVDF (container VDF)". So, I was wondering if Avira is trying to make it DIFFICULT or IMPOSSIBLE for the Free Version Users to update anymore.
Q1: Has anybody else experienced this!?!?
2) I then tried to update the Avira definitions thru the Avira GUI where it says "Start Update" ... Update starts and then crashes with the following message ... "Error loading system components. The update process could not be carried out."
Now mind you I have used this way of updates before and worked just fine.
Q2: Has anybody experienced this incident!?!?
FYI ... I am on Avira 9.0.0.410 version ... it seems all other download sites still report 9.0.0.407 version.
Thanks,
G! -
Please disregard my above post ... post #805 ... I did not want to delete it or amend it ... just in case if anyone else is experiencing the same problem ... so it can help them ...
anyway, I just tried the updater from the Avira GUI again ... and this time it did update ... but now I am at version 9.0.0.415 ...
But what I don't understand is WHY the Avira downloads are still at version 9.0.0.407 ... I don't see any downloads for versions 9.0.0.410 or 9.0.0.415 !?!?
Thanks,
G! -

Hi CoolGuy,
You are the "Coolest" ... I have done many searches before and it has never given me the Download Site that you posted above. Also, the News piece that you shared is a Great thing ... I was at Avira Forum and I see that they are listening to the Feedback of the Users!
THANKS!
G! -
Holy crap Baserk - your first post was nearly two years ago today in 2007. And you JUST updated the first post five days ago. Damn. You deserve a rep for that. Except what you really deserve is a kiss on the face for the great deed to the community!!
-
I almost abandoned Avira because of this issue. -
I just installed/updated Comodo Firewall, and I couldn't help but notice my internet seems to be running slower as a result. Network defense and proactive defense are currently set at 'Safe Mode'.
Do you know what mode I should use so I can game/surf at the highest potential speed? -
try disabling see if ur speed increases..
-
D+; -> Advanced -> Computer security policy-> click purge
FW; -> Advanced -> Network security policy ->click purge
You can also deactivate D+ and the firewall separately to find out where the problem lies (check whether the Windows firewall is active after deactivating the Comodo one).
Usually, a reinstall is the quickest way to solve the matter, Comodo often has mere bugfix updates which never require a reinstall but some more hefty updates/program changes, have caused me more trouble than I care to remember.
A simple reinstall was always the only thing necessary though.
Thanks for your previous post btw -
Hi folks,
I did a quick search of the NBR for the following Q and no hits ... so here it goes ...
Q1: Will installing ClamWin 0.95.3 "Freeware" conflict with Avira Anti-Virus?
I believe it won't since ClamWin Freeware claims that it does NOT have Active Scanner and it will act only as an On-Demand Scanner.
Q2: Does anyone actually have a Realtime AntiVirus installed along with ClamWin on their PC? If so, what is YOUR experience ... works fine or what?
Thanks!
G! -
As far as i know, ClamWin isn't a good AV. But i haven't tried it myself, so i cant confirm this.
And besides, why would you want another AV when you have Avira installed? I think you'r good to go with just Avira. And of course, it wouldn't hurt to have backup on-demand's like MBAM or Hitman Pro.
I run only Panda Cloud AV on my home PC (32 bit), and have MBAM and Hitman Pro 3.5 as on-demand. Of-course, pretty much all threat gates are in a sandbox. -
Clamwin is indeed on-demand only and should therefore not cause any issues.
Like arjunned already said, it has rather poor detection rates compared to the popular free ones, so besides just testing for the heck of it, I see no need to install it.
Also +1 for MBAM as an on-demand option. -
Hi arjunned & Baserk,
Thanks for the input ... I think awhile back I used it as an "Extra" on-demand scanner for wishy-washy files that I get ... it worked for a while ... then it cfrapped out so I uninstalled it ... and then I came across it again yesterday ... and noticed it had a New version ... so before installing I wanted to see what you folks feeling and input would be.
@ Baserk ... I don't think MBAM works as On-Demand on a 64-Bit system ... not like Avira ... it does not give you Right-Click option ... I wish MBAM would provide it for 64-Bit system.
Oh BTW ... I installed GeSWall ... and I ended up unistalling it ... it would Not even let me plug in my external hard drive ... a bit too much of a pain in the neck for me ... and I guess it has a bit longer learning curve that I care for ... I uninstalled it ... I am staying with WinPatrol ... a little more "dummy-proof" to me.
Thanks again,
G! -
There is a small fix for the MBAM x64 shell extension. LINK (Chk post #6)
It isn't the same as the normal method, but still works. Try it and let me know.
Cheers. -

Is there any Good Portable AV Program that no need to
install & can Just run on the USB Drive..?
::: -
has anybody gotten a third party firewall to work with windows 7? ive got PC Tools firewall and it never stays enabled.
-
comodo is fine
-
So does Online Armor and Outpost Free.
-
Dude ... you are all over the places.
THANKS arjunned!
G!
I understand "Spybot S&D" can be run as a "Portable" App ... just install it on your PC ... then copy the Entire Folder on your USB and then uninstall the one from your PC ... and run it from your Flashdrive!
G!
I will second Konstantin vote for Comodo Firewall.
Don't even waste your time with anything else ...
Go to Baserk's Page 1 (this Thread) ... download Comodo ... they have both 32-Bit and 64-Bit flavors ... make sure You FOLLOW Baserk's suggestion and NOT INSTALL the 3 Options ...
During install I would Opt for Defense+ ... the maximum protection.
BTW, FYI ... I run AVIRA for AntiVirus ... and the 2 work perfect together.
G! -
Me too gonwk. Almost feels like Avira's worthless now though because nothing gets past Comodo.
I also disabled Avira's firewall so there wouldn't be a conflict with Comodo.
-
:::
Hi gonwk, thanks for your reply, But I think Spybot is Not Anti-Virus
Program.... Any Portable Anti-Virus recommandation?

Avast has something of a portable virus cleaner but it's meant to scan for (and clean) some most common viri and worms, that's all. ( link)
Don't mistake it for a full-fledged AV like the regular Avast (free or paid). -
Something similar to what Baserk mention above would be Dr. Web CureIt. Download from here.
Its great at cleaning and removing viri from infected PC's. Also note, always download the latest one from their website, so that its definitions are up-2-date. -
use A-Squared Free then.. They have portable version as well..
-
if i will install comodo firewall, do i have to uninstall my windows firewall???
-
Comodo will disable the windows firewall automatically upon installation.
And you cant uninstall the windows firewall. Its built into the OS. -
how about the replacement for windows defender???
can you suggest any? -
Are you running any other anti-malware apps?
If you want just on-demand scanners, MBAM and Hitman Pro are great choices. -
:::
Thanks all for the idea of portable virus cleaner.
I will check them out...!
::: -
do i have to uninstalll my windows defender if i get threat fire???
threatfire is a antispyware right?
windows defender is antispyware? right? and so threatfire is also antispyware? -
Threatfire is an Anti-malware/Real time behaviour blocker, to detect mostly zero-day threats. It is meant to be used as added protection layer, along-side your existing AV.
Again, windows defender is built into the OS. I'm not sure if you can uninstall it. But you CAN disable it, as it doesn't do much, and is only an absolute necessity if you dont have another anti-malware app installed.
To disable windows defender here's what you do:
1. Click start button, type Run is Search box. Open Run (this can also be done by pressing Win Key + R)
2. Type "services.msc" in the dialog box (without quotes). This will open the Services Windows.
3. Scroll down and find Windows Defender. Double click it.
4. Under Start Up type, choose disabled.
5. Under Service Status, click on Stop.
Windows Defender is now disabled.
If you need any other help, feel free to post.
Cheers. -
do i really need to disabled windows defender if i have my threatfire??? or can i let it enable???
it will conflict???
this is my set up:
avira
threatfire
comodo
windows defender
is it good or bad???
windows defender and threatfire are the same anti spyware...
are they going to conflict?
do i have to disabled one of them?? -
Since you have Avira and threatfire, there's no point in having windows defender. So might as well disable it. I dont know if defender ever even catch's anything.
BTW, do u have D+ of Comodo enabled. If you do, then your setup is overkill. But if have just Avira, Threatfire and Comodo Firewall ( without D+), then you should be fine.
Cheers. -
I've been running Avast and Comodo for awhile, but have not been running an ant-spyware software for awhile. My internet has been slow lately and I want to scan my system to see if it's infected and clean it up. What would be a good free program for this? I just installed Threatfire but that doesn't seem meant for cleaning up infected systems. Thanks for any advice.
-
avast! has anti-spyware detection and removal for the free version as well.
Like i said before, MBAM and Hitman Pro are great on-demand anti-malware scanners. -
how about this set up:
avira
threatfire
windows firewall
windows defender
is this good??? any good set up? -
If you have Avira, Treatfire, and Comodo (without the Defense +), your good to go. If you have this setup, i suggest you disable Windows Defender.
Cheers. -
That sounds good.. You can use comodo but disable your D+ if you like
-
whats wrong with the comodo D+??
is there a conflict??? -
No, but it's like Windows Vista UAC on steroids.
-
what is UAC??? where can i find that in vista?
why do you said UAC on steroids? what do you mean by that??? -
UAC(User Account Control) is that pop-up which appears every time you want to install something, open a downloaded file or change any important file. For most people it's annoying so they disable it.
Comodo's Defense+ basically does the same thing: it alerts on every single change/entry/exit that hits its firewall. For some people that's annoying so they also disable it. -
my setup right now is avira, threat fire, and adaware on win7 64-bit and defender disabled.
do you think this is adequate?
also should i disable ad aware adwatch live as threatfire is better at handling realtime threat detection?
thanks in advance -
Remember the Golden Rule:
1 anti-virus
1 real time anti-malware and
1 firewall
if you ever find 2 in each, uninstall it...pick the better one... -
2. Exterminate it!
3. Comodo 3.13
Is that good? Because that's my current setup. The first two are "paid" versions. -
well my problem with threatfire is it disable sptd 1.6 which is used by daemon tools lite. anyway to work around this?
