Anyone else using Bitdefender?
Coupled to ad block plus and common sense, it has worked well.huntnyc likes this. -
Another free AV, Charity antivirus which is using the bitdefender engine.
It seems to be light on system resources too with a minimalist user interface.

I'm using Windows Defender at the moment. Not particularly fussed about it.Vasudev likes this.

Or skip AV for now. Work flawless if you don't jump into the wrong web pages or click on everything you see. Or pay. Up to yoo

I meant I am not fussed about using defender.

AV is just another attack vector these days. I'm just rolling with MSE which can be bad enough (MS just had to fix it). Probably the best thing you can do is just run a MalwareBytes scan once in a while (daily?).Donald@Paladin44, Vasudev, Papusan and 1 other person like this.

I did have Malwarebytes installed but I ran out the free trial it got uninstalled

I'm pretty sure you can continue to run manual scans even if it expires.Vasudev likes this.

I've been using BGPKiller on one of my machines now for over a year. no problems with it.

What does everyone think of Norton?
-
People are gonna crap on it because it's trendy but ever since 2009 or so Norton has been very good at being non resource intensive.
For most enthusiast types though, I think Windows Defender combined with MalwareBytes is adequate especially since we (collectively) tend to be more savvy and pay attention to what we're doing online.
However if you were giving a PC to a non techie family member and they were able to get Norton for free from their ISP or something, it's not a bad solution.huntnyc likes this. -

Windows Defender has terrible detection rates and is a resource hog. I installed NOD32 on my parents' and wife's computers and no one has had any issues. It's been well worth the cost.Spartan@HIDevolution, huntnyc and downloads like this. -
It seems Avira has stopped their free internet virus protection for Win 7.
Wondering if anyone has found free antivirus software for win 7 ? -
Try Kaspersky free or Avast.
-
Done. Thanks. Went with Avast. Got to say it runs a little faster now.

Bloated!
It has a file shredder, system optimizer, disk defragmenter, Norton Toolbar, Norton File Vault (cloud storage), anything you could think of, is in it and there's no way to do a custom installation, it's all or nothingVasudev likes this. -
Avira bloated me out. They wanted to clean up and password protect, and
update software.
Avast has the same platform but I haven't loaded anything but antivirus....
Or so I think...Vasudev likes this. -

Well I would avoid Kaspersky, I use to get it free from my bank Barclay, But the other day i got an email saying they will no longer off it, As the UK government has advised Government agencies not to use Russian based AV software, So it looks like Barclays are playing it safe.
I posted that Barclays should stop giving free Kaspersky months ago and offer Avast or Norton`s, But by GOD not McAfee`s
