Hi my 2 month trial of norton interent secruity is going to go out in 5 days and I am looking for a free virus protection so I can keep my computer at top preformance. Are there any virus protections that are free that are better then norton interent security?

I use avira, very good free anti-virus.
Also, if you use the search function, you will get loads of threads like this, plus there is a sticky with free security software listed here:

I've been using AVG by Grisoft for about 3 years now and it's caught every virus I've come across. They just updated to version 8.5 with all new definition, and they seem to update just about everyday.

I use Avira also, it's a great program!
And, if your going to check out Avira..try the new Version 9 nice..it's pretty sweet!

Ive been using avast for 3 years now and Its great! just install it and you dont have to mess with any settings ever.
hope this helps -
NOD32. The best. Officially. 6 years running. The lightest.
-
Avira's pop ups are really annoying. ive used avast for 4 years without problem
-
Yeah but it's not free.
To the OP, it seems most think Avira is best followed by Avast and AVG. Add SuperAntiSpyware and/or MalwarebytesAntiMalware and Spywareblaster and you should be covered. -
I disabled the start up splash screen and the pop up to upgrade to the pro version on update in version 8 and get none after upgrading to version 9.

I was thinking of getting avg but on my old computer when I used avast it was so slow when it always told me about an update.
-
Whatever you decide just make sure to remove all traces of Norton, which from what I understand is easier said than done.
Another option you may want to think about is Comodo Internet Security suite with firewall, D+ (HIPS) and an anti-virus. -
I use AVG free. It's performance is supposed to be comparable to the other free ones but the real kicker with this one is the excellent and easy to use interface. Also, it has everything in it including anti-spyware and real time protection.

Easily Avira.

There aren't that many notable free AV out there. Currently, and for quite a while, it's generally been
Avira >>>> Avast >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> AVG (only because the icon is hideous; otherwise it's about the same as Avast)
more or less
Why are there still 4 new threads about free AV every day despite the huge impossible-to-miss sticky in the first thread of this forum?
-
Well does avira protect from online viruses? like some sites will give you a virus or something like that
-
avast does...if it detects a virus on a website a splash screen will pop-up and ask if you want to terminate the connection to the website.
I know.. ive tried
-
I wonder if maybe they put huge, glowing, animations around the thread, it would stand out more, no??
*sigh* Such an awesome thread ....

Ok I'm sorry guys. I should search before I post. I will take a look at those threads

Is the OP a student in college or university by any chance?
-
Second to that!

I am now an Avast user on all 3 of my notebooks. I used to use AVG for years, but quit when the resident shield popped up saying I had 2 trojans. So I did the 2+ hour scan and it showed nothing. I was also getting tired of the long scans.
