My Norton trial period will soon be over and I'm wondering what to do right now. 1 year's subscription for Norton is about £40 I think - and would be the easy way out. But I've heard some good (and also bad) things about Kaspersky Internet Security 7.
I'm a little unsure how I would go about uninstalling Norton though - it seems rooted into the system! I would probably need to edit the registry even after uninstall... which is a disincentive!
Personally I'm quite happy with Norton - have used it for several years on older computers. But it would always be nice to free up those background processes... lol

First try uninstalling Norton in the add and remove programs. Then you should use Symantec's own Norton Removal Tool to remove what's left of the software. For me when I tried to remove Norton 2006 I used that tool but still had some leftover registry files that caused problems with other software. I'm not sure if this changed in newer versions of Norton though. Still I say that your best bet would be to reinstall the Windows if possible. haha
Also check out the The best free anti virus/firewall/anti spyware programs to see what free antivirus software you might be interested in. I personally use Avast and Comodo firewall. The combination works just as well as Norton Internet Security and best of all it's free. -
i removed norton from my aspire but still found bits in the registry.
then when doing a factory restore nortons reappeared.
the new removal tool removed all traces of nortons

Sorry, could you explain which 'removal tool' that is?
I've seen Kaspersky Internet Security 7 for £30 and think I might be buying that now... anybody know of any problems? Somebody said it has good performance (i.e. less background memory usage) but it affects Windows Checkdisk because of the way it marks files...? -
yeah, i'm also interested in it, is the removal tool that that thnksfrthmmrs has mentioned?

Yes, just click on the Norton Removal Tool link that I had on my other post.
I wouldn't download that program if I were you. It looks like a spyware program. That's because there's lots of registry cleaning software disguised as one. Just stick with CCleaner like Baserk said. Once I used too many registry cleaners that messed up my system so I would only use CCleaner that I trust. -
Baserk, thnksfrthmmrs, thanks for your comments, i'll now delete Registry Genius.
