Hi guys
I just wanted to inform you all that there is a trojan floating around on Photobuckets website.
Use extreme caution when using there uploading software.
Today I was uploading some images, when I received a "Internet security 2010 virus"
It is one of those fake trojans, but it wiped me of access to task manager, regedit, and the delete tool. I was unable to open any programs.
I tried removing the bug with Avira, and malware bytes, and neither worked.
Later I tried removing the source files by hooking the drive into another computer. Only a few of them deleted, but the ones which were write protected, only recreated the files which were deleted.
I spent the last 7 hours reinstalling Windows.
I was using IE8, so watch out.

Firefox + Adblock Plus + Noscript
It will never happen again.
But thanks for the heads up. -
As K-TRON said "uploading software" I have a feeling the browser has zero to do with it.
Adblock Plus and Noscript also won't just protect you from a virus.
As ads are an easy way of spreading them it might remove one vector of attack - but its not total protection. -

Has this been dealt with yet?

I was no aware of a virus on Photobucket... I uploaded about 30 files over the past week..
How does the virus download? Whats displayed? i did not see any messages or anything of the like.... What the virus attached to an add or something?
-
i have been uploasding photos akll week , nothing here , all clean . of course have not used ie in years

Photobucket's uploader is web-based, that's what he was referring to..technically it's a webapp.
This isn't a isolated occurrence, probably something to do with a rogue ad on the page maybe: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&...g&sa=X&oi=tool&resnum=4&ct=tlink&ved=0CBEQpwU -

I don't think that just uploading files will give you a virus, it must have come from somewhere else. To say that it was Photobucket's fault is a pretty serious accusation and security breach on their part.
In any case, you were using IE and from personal experience I know that it is much easier to get some kind of malware while using IE than any other browser. -
I read that as "Virus in a bucket" and proceeded to think, who would want that?
I then realized that I haven't used IE in 6 years, and that's exactly why. I don't like viruses. If you are still using IE, you get what you asked for.
Agreed. -
IE - isn't by default a dangerous browser - yes, IE7 and especially IE6 have a lot of security vulnerabilities, but IE8 is much better.
You can also quite safely use Internet Explorer for years and not catch any malware at all. -

IE is dangerous by default. I've personally witnessed malicious software install itself if the user visited the wrong site or clicked the wrong button.
-
And why is that IE's fault?
Yes, IE7 had a few security holes - but so does FF3, 2 etc.
IE is not by default dangerous - your browsing habits are more important. -
to avoid wasting 7 hours (more with all the settings/tweaks)...
try to keep image backups of your os (i use acronis but there are others), and (although its harder on windows 7 now) all of your personal files on another partition/drive, or at least backed up to another drive.
i can reload an os in about 15mins and all my personal stuff is not affected.
even a bad program install can cause problems and if it looks like it will take me more than say 30 mins to sort out, i just reload.

i have just clicked on the 'post quick reply' but maybe there should be a 'post smart () reply' ;-)
