I always install it along with Web and Standard shield, but I've never really understood what it does. Is it kind of like a very basic software firewall?

It just analyses network packages - I'd say its less than a firewall but more than nothing. -
Yeah I've read that, but not really sure what they mean by it analyses network traffic. How is that data distinct from what's already scanned by the other shields?

It possibly looks at what is sent.
The actual contents of the network package - like opening a parcel in a mail and checking contents. -
