Comodo rocks! Lifetime free service, and it was just written up by PC Magazine as one of, if not THE best free firewall.

They said it compares to many Firewalls which you need to purchase.

I've been using it for a few days, and really like it so far. Previously used Zone Alarm.

I've had a great experience so far with the free version of the Antivir software. It isn't a memory hog, runs smoothly and has an attractive, intuitive interface to boot.

Symantec Corporate is pretty good. My university gives it to the students for free, so it's what I use. I will however say that received one virus while using it. Luckily, it was simply an XP system restore away from being fixed, but it was there nonetheless. It also allows a hoard of spyware. I get adware from myspace like crazy with all the **** ads they have. But, Spybot and Ad-aware take care of that. Using Norton Internet Security 2005 I received two trojans (not even from pRon sites), the latter of which was system crippling and required a full reformat. One thing about it though is that it runs a ton of processes in the background, but I'm willing to live with it for the protection. My computer is fast enough anyway.

I have a problem with ZoneAlarm's free firewall. It usually works fine when I'm plugged in, but wireless has tons of problems disconnecting and is terribly slow using ZoneAlarm. I have to use the Windows firewall when at home cause ZoneAlarm kills the use.

Has anyone ever used the Comodo AntiVirus. People say that the Comodo Firewall is good, so I was wondering about the Comodo AntiVirus.

NOD32 is simply the best Anti-Virus on the market. Unlike norton and the rest, very little system resources with good protection.

I have using McAfee for a few months now (I got it free from my college) and it's starting to annoy me. See this thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=62192 to find out why.

I read that there are many free antivirus software available online like AVG and avast!.

What antivirus software is the best? Why is it better than the other?

For antivirus software the main factor which makes one product 'better' than another is detection rates. With that in mind, the best AV products are either NOD32, Kaspersky, or BitDefender. As far as free scanners, there are AVG, Avast, and Avira's AntiVir. Avira has the best detection rates by a decent margin, and Avast has slightly better real-time protection.

Like Omneus said NOD32 is the **** i have had several occassions where I knew i had something wrong with my pc and I scanned using free ones like Avast, and even tried AVG and for crying out loud even Norton, none of them detected anything... I then found NOD32 and it picked it up as an "unknown" virus which then fixed my problem. so as far as detecting known viruses sure the rest may be fine but the whole point of virus scanning is to detect new viruses because they come out so much but nod32 picked up an unknown virus which is quite amazing and its been known as one of the top 3 of detection rates with like 98% or so which is lot higher than most of your standard ones.

AVG is so **** free. It's an amazingly good program, so I don't really know why Grisoft doesn't charge (although I am not complaining). Seems like all companies are not as money crazed as Microsoft.

AVG has automatic updates, heuristic analysis (running in the process), email check, etc, and the whole thing is very light, unlike McAfee/Norton. I never have had a computer slow down after installing AVG, even very old ones with poor specs.

I too use AVG Free, and I'll leave the superlatives as it's already been done to death :p

I wonder about the paid for AVG Pro, which isn't too expensive for a 1yr/3yr license. Anyone tried AVG Pro? Just wondering is all...

Is there some kind of firewall thing in avast! Pro (the pay version)?

Also, how heavy are Kaspersky and BitDefender on resources compared to the other AV software available?

I don't know about BitDefender but I use Kaspersky Internet Security 6 and it is ridiculously light on resources considering that it has anti-virus, firewall, antispam, and antispyware all in one application. It does not slow down my system at all and is really a very complete and well-designed product. I highly recommend it, and you can get a 30 day demo from their website. And it is pricey, but eBay is a great place to save a bundle. :)

I'm very happy with both Avast and AVG free editions.

I use Avast on my notebook, and have just registered for a further 14 months free license, and I use AVG on other desktops and notebooks (AVG doesn't require any registration). Both have been effective with prevention and detection and don't use much resource.

How could NOD32 not be on that long list of AV's considering it actually is the best personal anti-virus software available? KAV2006 is very good as well although NOD32 is a little better in certain areas. AVG is about the best in terms of a freeware anti-virus. The personal editions of Norton and McAfee are nothing but bloatware that couldn't detect water in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

NOD32 = Eset, although he should have put NOD32 rather than Eset (company name).

NOD32 is superb, and low on resources.

Nothing is "free". I'm guessing you're offering up some pirated software? I don't think your offer is going to go over too well with the mods. Perhaps you can elaborate on what you mean by "free"?

Remember that the people that put forth the effort so that this protection can be enjoyed deserve to be paid for thier work ;)

    Not too helpful.

    AVG Antivirus Pro costs $38.95
Zone Alarm Security Suite costs $49.95

So, again what do you mean by free?

NOD32 for sure, I've tried most of the AV's out there and I found Nod32 to be the best in performance, takes up the least memory, scans the fastest, and does a great job protecting. The worst antivirus ever is Symantec's NAV. That program just sucks, it's like having a virus...

Has anyone else tried out MS Windows onecare?

It's real light, updates fast and often like (NOD32) but also includes MS Windows Defender anti-spyware, a backup util. and auto defrag.

3 computers for 50 bucks per year.

I have one Lappy running Nod32 and windows defender, one lappy and a desktop running OneCare.

My preference is AVG and Kasperskey. AVG (paid version) on the laptop and Kasperskey on the desktop. AVG seems better on the laptop and Kasperskey seems better on the desktop. Don't know why. No specifics.

ok well i attempted to read through this entire thread...i currently have norton installed by my vendor. It recently expired and i am thinking of using a new one after reading this thread. Now i read that uninstalling norton may delete some other things as well (files etc..)? True? Also i want something free and i want it to use up as little ram as possible bc i game a lot on this laptop. I want everything though..firewall/all the latest and greatest protection...i want EVERYTHING covered.

I just bought this MSI 1039 for $2000 and i would die if something were to happen to it...Thankyou for all your replies and im sorry if i come off as uneducated on this stuff....but i am :(

Correct; nod32 doesn't include a firewall. Windows sp2 firewall should be good enough if you have safe browsing habbits; Comodo or other freeware firewalls if you want more protection.

    Uninstall norton

nod32 kinda sux... i mean it's good and silent until the trial expires. Avast! is probably one of the few good ones. AVG is okay, I used it until I switched to Avast!. I think it's better.

Symantec Anti-Virus Corporate Edition is hands down the best and most simple looking AV compared to the commercial Norton and McAfee AVs.

Never requires subscriptions and has updates for life.

You can actually get a real legit CD on eBay for $30.

    search for "symantec corporate"

AVG is simply an antivirus product. It doesn't contain antispyware, firewall, etc. For antispyware, Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spybot SD, and Hijackthis are all good free products. Zonealarm free and Comodo are both good free firewalls as well. Also, Avast is equal with AVG for the most part, and the main reason to choose it over AVG would be because of marginally better detection rates.

From what i have read, the bulk of answers lead towards AVG.
here is what i have decided.
1-AVG free version (from above link)
    2-Adaware SE Personal
    3-Zonealarm

    Sound fully covered?
Now should i download all 3 of these and then uninstall my Norton or is it ok to Uninstall Norton then go download/install the 3 programs? Thanks

As long as ZA and AVG aren't running simultaneously with Norton, it shouldn't make a difference whether you uninstall before or after. If anything it probably be better to uninstall Norton after downloading but before installing; that way your protected as long as possible without also generating conflicts.
