Depends if you're looking for free or paid.
-
i think NOD 32 is the BEST! doesnt bog you down, and it rox
-
^Yep^

-
Kaspersky v7 also good.
Anti-Virus Comparative August 2007
Kaspersky slightly better than NOD -
I have NOD32, and i think it is very good
but personally, i don't think that it is very important b/c i had NOD32 for more than 4 months on my lappy, and hasent caught one virus, infact i have never got a virus ever before. -
is nod32 free?
-
Nope. Not free
-
NOD32 and Kaspersky are pretty much the best options.
-
Avast, used it for a couple years and couldn't be happier.
-
webroot spy sweeper/antivirus
-
ZoneAlarm
-
I find Kaspersky better than NOD in the latest iterations if you're one to take advantage of all the features. Gone back to NOD recently because it just feels like it takes up less resources.

With Dell you should have taken the Trend Micro option. It's like the only non-McAfee one on there. It would have been solid.
I've set up Avast and that seems to work good for anti-virus.
I use BitDefender 2008 on my main PC here, the Internet Security version which offers anti-spyware, anti-virus, firewall, etc. I like that for the most part. -
trend micro bogged the hell out of my desktop
-
heard good things about kaspersky. thinking about getting a copy for myself.

Road Runner offers CA Security Suite for free, so that's what I use. Road Runner used to offer EZ Armor Suite instead (also made by CA), but they switched to CA Security Suite recently I think because EZ Armor wasn't compatible with Vista.
CA seems to be working ok. My main complaint is that if I put my laptop to sleep, sometimes when I wake it up the CA Personal Firewall prevents me from accessing the internet, perhaps blocking access to my router. If I disable the firewall, I can access the internet again (or if I reboot, I can keep the firewall on).
Any reasons not to use CA if I'm getting it for free? -

I second that. I personally use NOD32. It has the fastest real-time protection scanner I have ever used. I cannot really feel a difference in program operating speed with it on or off.
As for free AV programs, I am particularly fond of Avast Antivirus. It's detection rate is impressive. Its real-time protection scanner is however a bit slow, i.e. it slows down internet browsing and opening of programs, compared to fast AV programs like NOD32. But then again it is free, so it is not a complaint.
I have also only heard good things about Kaspersky. -
I've been using NOD32 for several years now and couldn't be happier. It works in the background and is never noticed. After the 1st year it's only $20 per year if you sign up for the 2 year option.
-
AVAST for me.
-
I agree with this one.
-
AVG + avast = happy me
LOL i support avast and avg and feel that it is one of the best if not the best antivvirus protection programs i have come across
then if i were will ing to pay id go for nod32 antivirus
from what i have seen its remarkably light on resources and yet waaay bettr than norton in my opinion -
Hello all, I have been trying to answer this for myself as well.
I see that some recommend AVG Antivirus so I thought I would check it out But then I found This "http://www.software-antivirus.com/program/kaspersky-antivirus-review.html"
I guess it is another pile of information to sift through. It is good to hear from actual users and their experiences with what seems to work best.

For a significantly more objective approach to determining which Anti-Virus application is the best (for your need), go to this web site:
http://www.av-comparatives.org/
Make sure to read both the report and the online results.
While AVG and Avast being good free AV programs, they both only managed to detect 3 out of 12 polymorphic viruses in the August tests, while NOD32, Kaspersky, Norton and AVK managed to detect all 12 of 12. Quite a difference. -
I've put several virus scanners to the test. None of the ones I tested were able to protect me from a 1MB .exe. file.
I've tested NOD32, AVG Free, Antvir PE, Norton and more.

Anyone tried sophos? I heard they are one of the most powerful enterprise AVs. Well if its good enough for enterprise level then its surely be worth a try for personal use.

Im currently using Kaspersky internet secuirty 7, an i have to say ive been nothing but impressed. I havent had any virus/adaware problems since ive had it an i do feel confident that my system is suitably protected.
Also i have it on the lowest secuirty settings, as i dont want to sacrifice speed.
so yeah, highy recommended.

Based on my own testing I would have to say Kaspersky is the best.
