Hey All,
I've been using AVG Free and Adaware and Spybot for the last 5 years or so. While adaware and spybot have found their share of junk that you accumulate along the way, I don't think I've ever had a single virus detected.
I download torrents of all kinds all the time, I visit all different kinds of websites. I'm not particularly careful with what I download. So what are some of you guys doing that get you infected?
I was a little worried a few weeks ago that avg was missing something to I downloaded Avira and Kapersky and installed them both and ran scans that came up empty. So what am I doing right?

Oh, I usually go to www.allthebestviruses.com. I've found it to be easy to use, but with good quality viruses. You may not find everything there, but there is really a good selection, and you can always suggest/upload ones they don't have.

Most likely, not clicking on the fake links used to trick users into permitting the execution of a virus.

What a devious lot these virii-writers are, eh? You've probably got a wicked infection of not-infecteditis by now.
p.s., you do know I'm just kidding, right? -
I get all my viruses at work, from incompetent slobs who don't cover their mouths when they cough or wash their hands properly!

haha wondering whether its where do you get virus or how do puter gets virus?
well my system never had a single infection from past 4 years.
well most say u get virus while surfing , haha, but the thing is how we get virus is that,
When u are not using anti-virus software or your antivirus definition is out of date
Transferring data from your friends PC thru HD, USB drives while he might/might not have protection for his pc.
Clicking on adds while surfing (using a pop up blocker Helps most times)
Downloading stuffs from unknown source.
-
yep, back to the question... i don't like unknown data sources
but it's quite easy to get a virus when browsing... hackers are adding exploits to legitimate sites, lately i remember some beekeepers club, alternative music or hats producer site being infected.
checking everything on port 80 and some others (at it's the only way how to block this in time) may sound like a paranoia... but it still seems better than having to deal with some nice infection. -
Also, this process doesn't have to rely on the user manually clicking a link; e.g., if the fake resource link appears to be for an image file, the browser will go and automatically submit a GET for the image file, and when it receives the 302 redirect back, will automatically, and silently, follow the redirection link.
So, you may think that image href on that website is www.sundayschoolteachers.org/classpix.jpeg, but that server, instead of giving you a JPEG format image file showing grim-looking ladies with steel-coloured hair, it sends you a redirection URL that might look like www.sundayschooltruants.co.cn?action=downloadtrojan&followup=installtrojan, and your browser, without having the decency to tell you that it's departing the holy domain for the unholy domain, will simply pop on over to sundayschooltruants.co.cn and proceed to start downloading and then installing the trojan at the other end of the redirected link (yah, ok, so I way oversimplified the whole thing, but basically, IE7 for example, will not by default tell you when the server supposedly hosting the resource you were looking for sends you an a cross-domain snipe hunt).

There is a new virus that is infecting servers across the net called "downandup" virus and I am real paranoid now about it. I read about it on Google news:
http://www.informationweek.com/news...icleID=212901058&cid=iwhome_art_Opera_mostpop
Nearly 9 Million PCs Hit By 'Downandup' Worm
InformationWeek - 1 hour ago
The network worm is a bunch of malware variants that target older Windows machines and changes itself, or is changed by its authors, to prevent signature-based detection.
Sounds nasty! I don't think there is any way to stop infection is there? I am just not going to websites I don't know, so that is one way I am trying to avoid it.Still freaks me out though, I know people this has infected-from another forum I go to-the board wasn't infected by this....yet....but that could change since I don't know what OS the server uses. HOW are they able to insert stuff onto a server without permissions? That is what boggles my mind the most....
