Which antivirus software shoud I get?

Should I get Norton, CA Anti-Virus (which I like because the software comes on a 2GB USB Drive that I could use for Readyboost) and or Windows Live OneCare? All of them are about the same price, so I don't care about the price.

 

I don't know about CA-Antivirus, but the other two that you mentioned have horrible reputation. They eat up your resources and slow your computer down to a crawl. Personally, I use the AVG Antivirus, which is free and considerable light on resources.

If you really want a commercial antivirus software, I suggest Kaspersky.

 

Kaspersky's got a deal going on frys. $60-MIR-Competitive Upgrade rebate = $0. I've heard good things about it, but I've used AVG for a while and it was quiet and resource light as Patrick mentioned.

 

Get Kaspersky, which is really best, but expensive.

Or get NOD32 from Eset, which is the best and not as expensive as Kaspersky. They both are wonderful. I would probably recommend BitDefender as well, but it has a very large amount of false positives.

DON'T get Norton, ever. Or McAfee. They ruin your system.

CA and Windows Live AVs both have medium detection rates and are not as good as Kaspersky or NOD32.

P.S. I used to swear by AVG and used it for over a year and recommended it to all my friends, till it let in some virus which transmitted through people's flash disks. It gave me no indication whatsoever about that virus and the virus infected ALL my documents and I simply had to format the flash drive again. I had a hard time cleaning it out from my system as well. After that, I've been using NOD32, which detected and cleaned the virus no problem, and which is clean, fast and efficient.

 

Yeah, Norton AV and Windows Live OneCare aren't that great...I would avoid them if possible. If you must need an antivirus that you've heard of (considering Kaspersky and NOD32 aren't really known outside the techie-group), get Trend Micro.

I highly recommend Kaspersky and NOD32.

 

Of the free, I prefer avast! antivirus. I would probably go with either Kaspersky or NOD32 if buying. This is what I did go with for my own PC. I view this as a multiple front: FireWall + AntiSpyWare + AntiVirus.

nod32 user here and love it would not look elsewhere ... im actually using their full security suite at the moment beta testing it for them and i love that as well not the best firewall out there but it does work very well imo prob one of the best in a full suite

 

I use Kaspersky, they upadate their database hourly so you can always count on protection. It's an easy program to use, I guess it's expensive I didn't really think so but from what other people are saying. It's worth it I think.

 

Agreed. If Norton's detection rate was as high as it's system requirements, it would be a great product. Kaspersky is what i use on my computer. It's an all in one solution: Antivirus, scanner, and firewall.

But most people would do well to go with free antivirus and free firewall as long as they don't click every friggin ad out there (my coworkers *annoyed*).

Edit: I personally hate bulky security suites.

 

Norton 2007/2008.

 

Both NOD32 and Kaspersky are of good reputations.

Norton should be avoided. McAfee 8.5i (Enterprise version) is okay, but not the family version.

CA's product is in general not that good (Maybe I am wrong).

 

Norton is a memory hog, definately go with Kaspersky Antivirus 7.0

 

2007/2008 is as light as a feather.

 

The cursing from the owner of the other laptop in the house would seem to indicate that Norton 2007 may interact in some less than desirable ways ....

 

Ive been using NOD32 from almost the first version of it, and its always worked great for me, the small ram foot print lets my system humm along like the av wasn't even there, ive seen nod32 evolve and it just gets better and better, I really dont understand Norton and Mcaffee continuing with their bloat.

 

i just installed and it dosent look bad so far. I recommend this one.
