Which is better? I know one will always catch something the the other doesn't but I want to know overall which is better than the other?
I currently used Spybot search and destroy FTW
-
OMG? Is it even fair to compare the two? SuperAntiSpyware by a LANDSLIDE, oh and boy do I mean by a landslide.
Spybot S&D used to be at the top back in the day when Lavasoft's Adaware was at the top too. Nowadays those 2 have become horrible in detection and everything. SAS has the best detection rates. Best on-demand scanner available today. -
ohhh crap! *uninstalling spybot immediately*
I voted for spybot in this thread how can I reverse my vote? -
Not even kidding. Since S&D is your current scanner and nothing comes up, install SAS and scan with that, and if nothing comes up then your computer is actually clean, but if it does detect something then you'll realize S&D is crap.
It's ok, it's just a poll. Just go with the winner SAS and use that.
It's also fine to have S&D as your backup scanner, but I would recommend using MBAM as a backup lol. -
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware pawns both.
-
No way lol. MBAM is indeed good, but not as good as SAS, that's why MBAM is my 2nd choice.
-
Since none of them are active scanners, only on demand, it's a good idea to cross scan anyway, NOT just choose one. Spybot SD, SUPERAntiSpyware, and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware are top three anyway. Spybot scans way faster, SUPER picks up a lot more stuff.
-
SAS can have real-time protection if you pay for it. :x
Same with MBAM. -
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
Use all three! Spybot, SAS, and Malwarebytes. Thats what I do.
-
3 is a bit much, imo. xD
-
Ok SAS just caught 17 threats that Spybot S&D didn't!
-
Told you.
SAS ftw. -
The only thing I use Spybot Search & Destroy for is its Immunization feature. I find that to be very nice. I don't think I've done an on-demand scan with Spybot S&D for over a year...
I use a-squared free (my current favorite) and SAS as my on-demand scanners. I like a-squared shell integration; It allows me to right click on a file and select "Scan with a-squared". Very handy, IMO. -
a-squared's detection is pretty weak.
SAS and MBAM both have shell integration to right click and scan.
-
+1 on the immunization feature. I like it too. Though I use SAS for the on-demand scan. I used to have S&D scan, but stopped using it long back. Have stuck with SAS.
-
I might have to make a transition then.
-
The immunization feature is basically to immunize you from tracking cookies right? But really tracking cookies can't do anything. Is there more to the immunization feature that I don't know?
-
Just a small info...
-
This post does a good job explaining it: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial43.html#immunize
-
I use all three, and all SAS and S&D ever find is cookies. When I first installed MB, it found 4 trojans that NIS 2008, SAS and S&D did not. I have no idea how long they were on my system, there were no obvious symptoms. MB hasn't detected a thing since, the others keep coming up with the same things every time, no real threats. Am I missing something or maybe I don't go to any bad sites?
-
lol.. I just quoted from there
forgot the link though
-
We did indeed get our information from the same place! That post I linked has some good info about Spybot S&D - I often show it to people who *gasp* have never heard about it.
-
Thanks guys, will look into it.
And kingbob that's fine.
When I first installed SAS it found 3 nasties. Then later when I found out about MBAM, it found 2 nasties that SAS didn't. Since then, neither has found anything(besides SAS tracking cookies)but I still scan every few days. -
I just re-installed SAS... guess it doesn't hurt to have another scanner to backup MBAM and NIS '09.
-
My computer never has anything but tracking cookies... so I installed SpywareBlaster, enabled protection... now I hardly have anything.
-
SpywareBlaster has real-time protection? For free?
-
That would be a bit far fetched imho, I mean, to call it real-time protection.
It does offer some preventative protection though. -

Hi.
I always run both! , but i prefer SuperAntiSpyware.
Regards
John. -
Yeah Spyware Blaster isn't real time, but this is what I love about it. You install it, and it sets up your hosts file to redirect known harmful sites (those that tracking cookies come from, and more) and sends them to 127.0.0.1 (localhost). It 100% blocks you from accessing that bad site, so you never get there to begin with. It also patches vulnerabilities in browsers. Because it modifies the hosts file, it does not have to be running, and therefore USES ZERO RESOURCES. That's the reason I like it.
-
Tracking cookies can't really do anything. I don't see why you need to protect yourself from getting those.
-
Ok, thanks
So this is similar to Spybot S&D's immunization feature then, right?
-
I don't, and it's not the only thing it blocks. But tracking cookies were all that SAS was picking up, and now with SpywareBlaster, it picks up nothing.
I hardly even use my home computer anymore for anything but gaming though anyway, so currently, I have no anti-virus, anti-spyware, or anything of the sort installed. I know what I'm doing enough to be safe
-
This isn't even a contest. SAS hands down. Now, MBAM vs SAS is a more interesting comparison.
-
SuperAntiSpyware...this program was referred to me by 2 other peep's on the forum..when I was having issues, almost 2 months ago!
Worked great, still works great!

MBAM was good for me, till few months back. Then it started hanging up / crashing while doing a complete scan. Could not figure where / why it was crashing. But uninstalled it though. Just sticking with SAS for on-demand, now.

I have had problems with both MBAM and SAS, so neither is currently installed here. However, I would probably try either one of those before Spybot S&D or AdAware. I also would run GMER or HiJackThis before any of those four.
-
What kind of problems did you encounter with SAS and MBAM?
-
I really like Spybot, been using it for years. I like the immunization feature, been using it for years, as well as scans. (I also do immunization with Spywareblaster, also free.)
The best overall malware scanner is Malwarebytes. It once cleaned an infection in my system, that nothing else (including Symantec corporate antivirus) would detect or fix. I decided to purchase the background scanner, and now have it running all the time, so I turned off the background protection of Windows Defender, which I had used for bg anti-spyware previously.
I'm not so familiar with Super-Anti-Spyware (The name is lame though. Do they think that just calling it "super" will make everyone think it's the best?),but I doubt it is as good as MBAM. -

I use hijack this! religiously, but never heard of GMER before. Checked it out, looks pretty sweet! I had previously been using process explorer to discover hidden processes, threads, and system hooks/dll calls. Process explorer is invaluable and of course will stay in my toolkit, but I am going to give GMER a try.

You can also find some this way -
2nd, 3rd and ......
Been using it for many years!
cheers ... -
Kudos JohnDoe for perseverance.
Have you heard anything from RubberDucky/Nossirah since late october?
It looks a bit dissappointing, that lack of response.
I'd have expected more from them.... -

Everything is in the forums for both the SAS and the MBAM issues.
Although, it appears that other folks are also experiencing the same (or very similar) issue with MBAM as this post seems to indicate. -
I already use this technique for rooting out stuff on badly infected systems, thank you though.
Which is Better? S & D? or SuperAntiSpyware?
