Symantec in Vista (at least x64) cannot be unloaded which is a huge annoyance. In XP, you could easily unload it from the menu so that it wasn't a memory hog or resource when not wanted, and could be easily loaded when wanted - but in Vista there isn't such an option. What antivirus program do you guys suggest?

NOD32 (if you want to pay like $30)
Or for Free... Avira -
AVG is a pretty good one. Free too
-
Kaspersky Internet Security suite is the way to go. Otherwise, NOD32 is another great alternative.

They used to be called AVX(AntiVirus eXpert), a Russian based company, then later was bought by SOFTWIN(BitDefender) from Europe.
If you don't need all the features in Total Security, you can always just go with Internet Security or just the Antivirus. I don't use all the features in TS either, but I went with it because if the files shredder feature.

If you have another XP machine, you can always try their free version first, just like AVG's free edition, it doesn't have any real-time protection. The free version doesn't support Vista yet.

Avira works great on Vista x64.
-
AVG8 is solid aslong as you remove the LinkScanner and Email scanner options prior to installation
-
NOD32 is probably the best (but it's not free), BUT never buy full ESET Smart Security v3x as except NOD32 antivirus the rest is average/below average

The last I read was that there really isn't a need for an AV on a 64bit PC. Reasoning is that the majority of viruses are written for 32bit OS.
-
That is true, as with, you’re safer using Mozilla Firefox rather than Internet Exploder because most virus’s and "hacks" are written for it. But the risk still exists. I say just get Nod32, it's the best bang for your buck, just install and thats it for the basic user, don't really need to configure anything.

Yup like others have mentioned, NOD32 is the absolute best, worth every penny. Avast is the best FREE version IMO ...but that's highly debatable. Norton is Dookie on a stick!!
Which is the best antivirus solution for Vista x64? Have tried Symantec...
