    Would this update apply to MSE as used on earlier Windows versions (since Windows Defender is essentially renamed MSE)?

    No, the Windows Defender in Windows 10 is much improved and has extra layers for protection like cloud based protection and the ability to enable PUP detection via a reg trick:
