Hi i am curious about windows 8.1 and anti virus
right now i run windows 7 on my home laptop i have avast pro for my anti virus
it's the one that i find that i have and enjoy the protection of the most.

i am getting a new dell xps 12 and a dell venue 11 pro this week
not sure which one i am going to keep but only 1 of them i will keep the other i will send back.

    they both have windows 8.1

and im curious baout anti virus
i have been told that windows 8 comes with a anti virus or something along those lines
does anyone use this is it any good ?
im trying to avoid having to put as many programs as i can on
because the HD in the venue 11 pro is only 64 gigs and i heard with the OS loaded it will only be around 40 or 45 gigs of usual space.

the xps 12 has 80 gigs and will be more like 50 gigs of usable space and need to to keep as much free as possible

i don't think windows 7 has the same anti virus and protection that windows 8 does so this is why i am not familiar with this.

any help here would be great thank you .

At present, I have Windows 8 on my laptop and I am using Kaspersky. It is good protection. Earlier on my Dell laptop which had Windows 7, I was having Optimo AV cleaner and it works really nice for me. So, both are good antivirus software and I like both of them.

Win 8.1 does have it`s own AV called Windows Defender, which is basically Microsoft Security Essentials which you can download free for Win 8.0 and older, but Windows Defender does not have any Internet Protection, the Best free AV is Avast which does protect your computer from internet threats.

But for paid protection i recommend Kaspersky Internet Security 2014, i have been using it for years and have had no problems with virus/malware and i do use other run on demand virus/malware checkers to make sure it has not missed anything.

Also i get KIS 2014 free with my online banking with Barclays.

Well as Tinderbox said, Windows defender comes by default which is more commonly known as MSE. In case you do want to use another AV its advisable to use a paid antivirus solution. Go in for kaspersky, avst or quick heal. Anything that meets your need.
