The much awaited avast! v5 has been released. LINK

Nice to see that they upgraded the UI.
-
And off-course the addition of a Behaviour Blocker.

how's the firewall?

Okay, I don't care how it looks, what they've added or anything else.
Is the system faster with 5.0 than it was with 4.8?
Also, more specifically, is Avast! 5 faster than MSE? By 'faster', I mean the O/S's responsiveness, not how fast it scans.
Cheers! -

Avast Blog lists a few of the changes:
- Built an entirely new user interface. The old car stereo interface is gone replaced with a very modern and easy to use graphical interface.
- Eliminated the email registration process. The free product still lasts for a year but now it only takes seconds online to register the product. All a person has to now do is to click a “register” button—no forms to fill out and no email information to provide.
- Added a gaming mode—elements of this were there in 4.8 but now we have made this a central function. No need to buy someone else’s “gaming” product. All the capability is right here in the free product.
Or even clicking the OP's link takes you here. Cnet has a look at what is new. -

Nice, just uninstalled MSE and installed Avast 5
EDIT : It does not scan zip and rar and other compressed files by default , but it can be turned on in "real time shields/expert settings/packers" -
I was a beta tester through the development stages of Avast! 5 and I am glad to see it finally released. The new interface is quite refreshing, and easy on the eyes. I am really glad to see the end of those dreadful skins of version 4x, now avast looks like a serious anti-virus package.
-
don't know yet about scanning speeds, but it uses way fewer resources than ver 4.8. On my system, Avast4.8's 5 or 6 processes could total up to 100,000 k in time, just in running its real-time shields (not actually scanning the system). Avast5 seems to involve only 2 processes that total less than 12,000k <edited>. So I'm happy. The better UI is cool to boot.
-
I need to know it's RESOURCES USAGES(RAM and CPU).
If it's LOW and with at least the Detection Rate of MSSE, then, I might think about it.
Because I bored of MSSE and Avira AP9 already. LOL. -
If your bored of MSE, then why dont you install Avast! 5 and see for yourself.
Also, avast did pretty well in AV-comparatives Performance test.
Cheers. -
Indeed, the UI of the old version was a major turn off for me. It just didn't convey a sense of "professionalism" that other AV/Security software did. This was one reason why I didn't install it on my parents system, one look at the "radio" UI and they would have said "you can't be serious?"
If the performance is good, I might try it, I'm happy with MSE ATM though.

Review, it shows that it takes up 44mb memory.
Really love the ui, but I'm also happy with MSE atm. -
Any sources for it?
I need some reviews to confirm about it.
It's very late here(not USA). So, might try it when I am free and energetic. Now, I am tired.
-
Same here. The UI is nice and all and I like the extensive array of settings (something I'd like to see in MSE), but I'm still gonna stick with MSE.
-
Obviously it varies depending on what you're doing, but on my Windows 7 system right now, with Firefox open running 2 tabs, Task Manager reports:
AvastSvc.exe 6,440 k
AvastUI.exe 3,432 K
So all in all, it appears pretty light on its feet. The most recent AV comparatives rank it very highly. The revamped UI is very slick and the default sounds have been nicely altered... the "virus database has been updated" message is now delivered by a much more pleasant female voice. I won't need to change this one, like I did the others

can you upgrade to this directly from 4.8? or do you have to uninstall 4.8 first, then install 5.0?
-
OK. I switched to Avast! 5 Free AV now.
It works like a charm. Like it now.
It's using very low resources.
I don't care the AV Comparison shown that it's slow when Installation Rate(lame, who care?) and have lower Score overall due to that. I only care about 2 VITAL things, resources usage and detection rate. -
Just upgraded with no issues. Went through and messed with settings. I must say, the new GUI is as good as it has been touted. It is excellent with a lot of room for features/professional lic. So far, low on the resources, based a bunch of test files, we will see. I agree with dark, install time is not as key as resources and detection.
-
I am installing this but does it have a firewall built in or do i need a seperate firewall?
-
The free version of avast! 5 doesn't have a firewall. Here's what the Wb Shield of avast does:
-
getting comodo pro just in case... but would u recommend getting it or not? I don't want too many programs installed.
-
Like i mentioned in reply to ur thread; if your behind a router then i would recommend sticking with Windows Firewall. Otherwise Comodo is a great choice. I'm running Comodo and avast, and have no problems; though i haven't installed avast!'s web shield.
-
It depends on what you want from a 'firewall'.
If you use Comodo/CIS, besides easy outbound control, you will be able to secure your OS with a strong HIPS; Defense+, check the pics on this page to get an idea.
That's something else than a regular hardware or software firewall, you'll probably have a hardware NAT router and Windows firewall already, so decide for yourself if you want easy outbound control or a HIPS.
If you are sure that your notebook is clean, you can choose a much easier setup than the 'ultimate D+' setup in the link.
Check the Defense+ help files for 'training mode'.
Don't let the pics put you off, it's not that difficult.

I just uninstalled MSE for this. I noticed that MSE was hindering performance when exporting data off sd cards. The task completed much quicker with MSE gone.
-
Yes. MSSE is heavier than Avast! 5.0.
The only bright side of MSSE is the Anti-Spyware feature.
Now, I find Avast! 5.0 is the BEST. It's freaking low resources, with superb detection rate(a little bit lower than Avira) and "most complete"(have a lot features and protections) FREE AV.
Avast! 5 also have better GUI than MSSE(MSSE is simple and nice but not good enough) and Avira(better than MSSE). Now, Avast! 5 GUI is as good as AVG's.
But, AVG's "everything" sucks!
-
I have to try Avast 5.0 after my current Norton subscription runs out. Glad to hear this version performs well.
-
Do KIS or NOD32 have this sandbox feature and is it usefull at all?
-
Avast4 was awesome, and now with the new UI it's even better!
On top of that, it's lighter on the system it seems -
If its like Sandboxie, then yes, its useful.
-
Avast! 4.8 sucks. It have High Resources Usages. It's very bad for Low-End machines. In addition, it's UI like Muisc Player. LOL.
Avast! 5.0 is very good! I am using it now. It's very light resources. I run Benchmark to test it though. The UI is great too!
Detection Rate of Avast! Free Edition is considered as Very High(lower than Avira a bit) too. It's like equal with MSSE and superior than the LAMEST AVG. -
4.8 there nothing wrong with it, it's light and does me fine on Win 7 64bit and XP Pro.
Yeah so Avast 5 out and very good by all accounts each to their own
-
I have been using it for a while now. It does seem faster. I miss the the car radio control, though. They have replaced the male update voice with a female. The only thing i do not care for is the opening memory scan. Takes almost as long as a quick scan.
-
okay testing avast is5 now. first off it let a freddie.exe right through nis2010 found it in seconds and removed it. avast just went on to ignore it.
avast let 6 rouges breeze right through and install without even making a sound. of those nis2010 stopped 4 from even being able to be downloaded.
avast is LIGHTER than the nis2010 is, which is VERY impressive. one thing i dont like is everything is installed as separate procc's where say nis only runs one normally. the firewall in nis2010 is WAY better than avast one so far. a lot of things are auto configured from the start with avast and no way to change them. i have a ip i WANT to let connect but cant because avast is blocking it and there seems to be no way to change that. yes i tried custom rules etc but this is not a app thathas rules its a simple ip that it must think is a threat but its not. nis2010 does not block this.
i have a large set of virus's i keep. avast left 347 samples out of 6000 and then scanning the folder left behind by avast nis2010 then removed over 140+ leftovers by avast.
needless to say this is THE BEST free av overall but i dont think the suite is ready for me yet... -

zfactor,
thanks for this post.
I have been using MSE since day one and see no reason to try Avast! (what I was using before MSE) from all I've read.
One thing I've noticed with using Avast! over the years is that new versions tend to be very fast/light, but updates slow the system down considerably.
MSE seems to be immune to this so far.
Cheers! -
also used avast sandbox feature to run a rouge... it ACTUALLY RAN. looked like it was supposed to in the red box from the sandbox feature but it actually installed it and ran it even though i choose to run it sandboxed!!!!!! i mean wth is that about ... looks like they have work to do yet before its ready for prime time imo
-
Yes, i was surprised it got released now. They were talking about mid 2010 few months back I think.
-
Gotta say avast u did it again......it was great before but now its perfect....Light on resources great detection rate fast scanning got a 250 GB hard drive 88% full .........scanned everything in 41 min with settings set to full system scan even zip/archive files added it was scanning files at an average speed of 30 MB per sec. CPU usage had an average use of 13% memory at 19.5MB found two infected files............overall pleased with the results compared to 4.8..........4.8 took 2 hrs and 20 min to scan my hard drive......and my laptop is a piece of crap may be on some new higher end laptops it would do better.......
-
After using a combination of NOD32/Avira/MSE for the past year, the first thing I noticed upon switching to avast 5 was that:
The scanning engine is slow. Not quite AVG 4-hour-per-scan slow, but noticeably slower than the 3 antivirus (antivirii?) programs mentioned above. All 3 of the above programs completed a full scan within 40 minutes, but avast 5 took well over an hour to finish.
Has avast always been this slow? -

I've been using 4.8 for awhile, I guess I'll have to give the upgrade a shot.
Comodo + Avast has been good to me for awhile.
What's wrong with the m6862?
I love mine. Not the strongest gaming computer but then I don't want an hour of battery life and for the thing to weigh 7+ lbs. -
avast! 5 has a persistent cache and for the first few full or quick scan, the persistent cache keeps gathering data so that subsequent future scan, including realtime scanning, speed up. Only new and changed files within the cache are scanned.
avast! 5 cache system is pretty great. -
