    free Anti-virus software for a new laptop???

    everyone prefers free utility to costly big name software.

    so, my question is will AVG be ok for everyday use and maintence of my laptop, or it is just a backup plan (a kid's tool)

    should I buy a more mature solution from Norton,etc?

    no-frills and get-to-earth and using as little money as possible is my mantra in this case, though there is no free lunch in the world

    Norton is pretty much the worst antivirus out there (besides windows defender) if that even qualifys. Avast and AVG will be your best choices. You can also take part in the NOD32 beta program and use it for free.

    I have been using AVG Free Edition for about 2 years now without any hassle. It seems to do the job and uses little system resources (unlike the Norton hog).

    I am careful of what I download or the sites I visit though......

    Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic has low resource and high detection rate than others. It is FREE.

    Been using Avast for 2 years on a total of 5 desktop/laptops and no problem so far.

    Norton - evil.
    AVG - ok, found that it didn't have great detection of known viruses. Low detection rate of unknown viruses.
    Avast - pretty good, was good at finding/blocking.
    Avira - best entirely free AV I've used, updating is usually kind of slow, but that's a small price to pay.
    Nod32/kaspersky - not free but definitely amazing, excellent detection of un/known viruses.
