avast 5 free is very light, low cpu usage when scanning, been using it for years.
-
Im not sure how "light" it is but i have norton 360 and it works very well
-
If you want to pay for an anti-virus, use Norton 2010.
If you want to use a free anti-virus that's just as good, use Avira, Avast or MSE.
Avast is the lightest of the three in cpu and RAM use and has just a bit lower detection rate in contrast to Avira (and is much less annoying).
MSE is more cpu and RAM bound, but doesn't really impact performance on modern systems and has practically no false-positives (no annoyance whatsoever).
Avira has the highest detection rate but is by far the most annoying with pop-ups and false positives.
Take your pick between the three ... you can't really go wrong with either one.
Although, if one would 'have' to pick the best option, then Avast would be the best to use. -
ok cool thanks im gona try avast out for a week and see how it runs
between avast and norton 2010 wich one is better im not one who asumes the pay one is better becaus somtiems you dont get what you pay for lol
but is one better then the others

How about NOD32?
-
Avast! 5 Antivirus Free, Pro and Internet Security is lightweight
Im using the IS
-
i was just reading up and i think im gona go with avast i get that free is cheap since its free its also less saftey then the other to but between Pro and internet security wich one is really better is there a purpose to spend more money on one then the other ?

I suggest you first try the free version for a month or so.
If you really like it you can go for the pro version or the IS.
Personally:
I like Win7's own firewall.
My provider and my mail program have antispam technologies, I don't want another program interfering.
Don't use the sandbox.
Can't use the script shield because I use Firefox on a 64 bit system.
I don't see me using the command line scanner
I just bought the pro version because I liked the program and wanted to support Avast. -
It is a common misconception that free antivirus will provide an inferior defence compared to paid solutions.
Avira, Avast and MSE promptly shoot down that particular myth.
As for firewalls ...
Software ones are not exactly a good line of defence (they can easily be circumvented by a well directed attempt).
A hardware firewall would be a far more adequate option (the one inside an ADSL router for example).
Windows Vista/7 comes with a perfectly adequate firewall that can be modified to one's personal needs.
Furthermore, paid solutions can just as easily succumb to failures (and they have, on many occasions like their free equivalents).
It comes down to personal preference for the most part.
But I can tell you that in this day and age, spending money on a protection suite is a waste. -

Panda's Cloud based antivirus could be as light as you could possibly get.... it runs sexy smooth on my netbook and detects everything i need it too
-

You can also do an offline registration:
avast! Support Center
After that see if Avast updates.
If not there are other problems.
For them you can better the support site:
https://support.avast.com/index.php
Or their forum:
avast!WEBforum - Index -
I just got off the phone with Avast Suport took them a whyll but they got it activated and its working now
one of the problems is there where like 5 difrant security programs working at ones wich i dont understand how the heck it got on there
so im gona try this out and see how it works for the next 30 days
after that im gona try notron 360 and see how that works then ill go with wich ever one is better in the way i like
only think that i dont like is 59 dollars for 2 years of this when i could go on ebay and get norton 360 for 3 pcs for like 22 dollars or something like that -
now also will the trial version if it pulls up any infected folders or files what does it do does it delet them or does it quarantene them or how do i get ride of the infectiad files if there are any i get it stops anyting from comming up and all
-
Why don't you download and read the Avast Quick Start guide; link.
It explains the 5 different 'Avast Shields' and offers information about the default setting for a scan (move to quarantine) and how you can change this yourself. -

It may help you decide on which to chose!

If you wait, we'll have our paid antivirus/Internet security buyer's guide up in a week or two.
Right now, I'd recommend ESET Smart Security 4:
ESET Smart Security 4 Review
Definitely my top contender for overall protection and low system performance impact.
FYI -- doing a fresh install of Windows can do wonders for your performance. A lot of junk can collect on your hard drive over time and really slow it down. -
I'm a big supported of Microsoft Security Essentials.
-
I just reloaded windows formated HD and all
and went i got it back up and running i wanted to load Avast so i went back for the trial verison
and said same problem couldnt ocnect to the webiste so they couldnt activate it spend an hour with there tech suport and they condt figure it out
any idea what the heck is going on with this ?
any idea at all
i really wana continure to try this out for afew eeks and ones i know for sure i like it then ill pay for it but i dont understand and there tech cant even figure out whats going on
i guess im back to Micro trend for now -
Is Norton 360 Light and better then my Micro trend Internet Security that i have now ? or would the one i have now be lighter
-
MSE 2.0 beta is doing quite fine on my laptop, and best of all it´s free.
-
im thinkig about trying the avast free verision not the trial but wondering if it would take the same to activate it and give me the same problems
also if i just did the avast free version
would i then have to use my Windows Defender and Windows Firewall ? -
Avast free version has not given me any issues regarding registration.
After installing, you will only need to click once to register the free version.
Avast offers antivirus and antispyware protection so it's not absolutely necessary to run Windows Defender.
You must however use the Windows Firewall/keep it activated, if you don't use a 3rd party FW, especially if you're outdoors. -
ok Cool Thanks
IM just hoping that it doesnt give me the same problem because the issues they where having iwht activating a free trial for the pro was it kept saying i was not conected to the net but i was and also saying proxy settings where incorect but they where not
also whats the best way to get a program of the computer so that it doenst see there are 2 virus programs running i mean is it to go threw Programs unistal and take them at that way
someone said even if i unistall one Anti Virus program it could still be running in the back ground and then if i had more then one they start to fight each other is this true -
^
About having two AV's and them fighting each other, yes, it can happen.
But only if both are installed with real-time protection.
If you uninstall the AV the usual way, by using Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, it will be gone.
Also, with a simple registry cleaner like CCleaner, you can remove registry entries that are often leftover after uninstalling a program.
Removing them before re-installing a program can prevent problems. -
OMG i am scared to use ccleaner i just did that yesterday and it totaly took eveyrign i have and screwed it up im not sure what happend i may have messed with a setting by acident but it made nothing work
some think it has to do with me clearning the the prefetch out but all i did was delet the PF files
and things still worked noramly untill after i cleaned it with ccleaner then it all dispered -
did you do a back up for it?
looking for a better and lighter Antie Virus what you recoment please help
