How did you turn off the automatic update option? From Avast settings or within Windows Services?
-
i went under services and found a process called avast! iAVS4 Control Service and stop the service and then on start up i put disabled........ but then avast says cannot apply to registry.....
-
You mean your Avast! autoupdate function can't be disable using normal way?
So, you fix it using registry editing?
And now you want to update it and it can't be update?
Or you mean it still the same can't be disable?
Your Avast! is free edition or?
If free edition, I would suggest you to use AVIRA ANTIVIR PERSONAL 9...
It is free and superior than Avast! free edition. -
i tested avira and that thing just wasnt good virus went through the crappy so called guard shield......so i went back to avast pro. that thing cleaned the virus like it didnt even face avast....now my lappy runs smooth again.... and yes avira was up to date
-
So, did you mean that AVIRA save you?
-
no avira didnt save me crappy protection didnt help my friend sent me an attachment for a school project and i guess his computer had a virus and it got attached to his document he was gonna send .......he was already complaining about how slow his computer was ......so once he sent the attachment i got the virus even though firefox said it was clean of viruses and so on i guess avira didnt pick up the virus crappy protection .....dam virus crippled my PC but not to a point that i can uninstall avira and install avast....i used avasts boot scan found 10 viruses those bad buys were multiplying most of them in the system 32 folder........

Firefox' virusScan is not to be trusted.
Disable it by following these steps;
Open a new tab in Firefox.
Type about:config, then answer yes to the question.
In the Filter bar, type scan and then double-click on download.function.virusScan to change the value to false.
Afaik f.i. Avast is not supported by this function and in such cases Firefox virusScan will fall back to Windows Defender (can't test it with Avira right now).
My guess is that Avira didn't fail you but Windows Defender did.
Note that the Firefox virusScan message Scanning for viruses will even be shown with no AV installed.
It's a known Firefox bug; link

LIGHTGAM3R.....Okay I just set it to manual in Avast (using a 64 bit vista machine) and restarted it and it stayed in the manual mode for me. So what I would suggest is to unistall and reinstall Avast and see if that works for you.
