I'm Android ignorant, but is CyanogenMod an OS?

Yes, it's an AOSP based OS. It's stock ICS/GB with some very nice additions like the DSP Manager. :)

    What phone do you have?

With Qualcomm S3. A good bit of power for a 4" phone.

That's a REALLY good phone to use with CM9. It's basically a Nexus S, since the ICS source they're using for CM9 is Nexus S source.

I'd really recommend you try it if you want... just make backups! :)

Actually, I'm willing to try, I have nothing important in my phone atm. You know where to download this? I'm having a really hard time finding and CM's website doesn't show any DL links.

Well, I know how to put the phone into Download mode, other than that, it's up to the program that's being used.

I'm on GB right now, 2.3.5 to be exact. I actually had to downgrade to froyo first in order to uprgrade from GB 2.3.3 to 2.3.5. So basically, 1 step backwards, 2 steps forward kind of upgrade.

    Nice!

If you're on Gingerbread you're already on the Gingerbread bootloader. What you'll need to do first is install a kernel that has ClockworkMod Recovery instead of the Samsung stock recovery. That will allow you to flash zip ROM's. I've hosted a couple of things for you...

Boog's Stock GB Kernel with CWM Recovery
    ODIN3 1.83

    • Now, download and put the CM9 nightly on your -INTERNAL- storage. Don't put it in any folder. Just put it on the root.
    • Place your phone in Download Mode.
    • Open ODIN3 on your computer.
    • Put the Boog kernel in the PDA slot in ODIN, connect your phone and hit flash.

After ODIN reboots the phone, and you see Android booting you can just pull the battery.
Press and hold Vol+ and Vol- and Power until you boot into recovery.

    Recovery will look like this:

From the options you have, use the volume buttons to move up and down the list and power to select and option. Select "Install ZIP From SD Card". Then "Choose ZIP From SD Card". Then find the CM9 zip and press the power button and select and flash it. It should reboot after a second and then reboot back into recovery and finish flashing CM9 automatically.

If all or any of this fails, nothing here messes with the bootloader so there is absolutely no chance of a permanent brick. Just reflash with an ODIN One-Click GB package. :)

If you have any questions or anything... feel free.

I really want to try CM9 on my Triumph, but it's not quite ready to go yet. I've been using CM7 for months, which is virtually 100% functional; the only thing not working is HDMI. CM9 is still in a very early alpha stage, though; neither the rear- nor front-facing cameras, USB tethering, nor all of the settings menu are functional yet.

I've realized the Apollo player doesn't have a "Most played songs" list. It's okay though, I'm using Poweramp instead.

What annoys me about poweramp, is that the player bar is right above my home keys. So whenever I just want to go to the home screen and let the music play in the background, it end up rewinding the song on accident.

I can't decide whether I should keep my Nexus HSPA+ or my Blaze 4G.

    Nexus cons:

    Large
    Below average battery life

    Blaze cons:

    Screen is kinda small

    Nexus S or Galaxy Nexus?

Between the Galaxy Nexus and the Blaze, keep the GN. Definitely.
If it's a Nexus S, that's a tough decision. I personally like Hummingbird a lot, but that decision would be up to you. The Nexus S will be supported by the community until 2126...

It's a Galaxy Nexus (4.6"). I don't have it yet, but everything I've read says it has below average battery life.

I've had my Blaze 4G on since 7, and used it at least two hours(Web, YouTube, Pandora, FB, etc), and it's at 58%.

The HSPA+ version doesn't. The LTE version does.

The HSPA+ version can be loaded up with a nice ROM/Kernel combo that will get you some very nice battery life.

HAL, what kind of programming language does building CM9 and/or kernels use? Is it java?

I would like to TRY to learn (more like in the summer, no time atm) and TRY to fiddle in the kernel and DSPManager to find out why it doesn't work on Siyah.

Yup, DSPManager only works with the stock CM9 kernel. It doesn't work with Siyah, NEAK or any other, and the devs have no clue. I PM'd Gokhanmoral regarding that issue, he replied :

I'm on Siyah kernel for a while now, but the last time I checked and tried using DSP Manager on the stock CM9 kernel, it didn't work at the time either! All in all, the DSP Manager worked great for me in CM7, but not once in CM9..

    i777. I'll probably sell the i777 for a ceramic white i9100.

Proper CM9 has had DSP Manager from the get-go. There are things that must be present in initramfs and also a bunch of really specific libs.

Why get the i777 to sell for the I9100? Why not the I9100 straight away?

As soon as you get the I9100, you really have to get Siyah. I've undervolted the CPU (-50mV) and the GPU (step 1 - 66MHz @ 900mV, step 2 - 133MHz @ 950mV, step 3 - 267MHz @ 1000mV) using ExTweaks app (only compatible with Siyah), and the battery life is so much better now...!

What things exactly? When you get the time, could you see if Siyah has the libs? Because perhaps it does have the required libs, but not the things in the initramfs.

CM9 got DSPManager working since around 10th of April. It has been working damn nicely since then!

Yep, it is. Samsung phone warranties are tied to device, starting from the purchase date by the first owner. Whether the carrier will support it varies though (apparently Verizon will not, for second-hand phones).

Hmm, that's subtly different to the wording of the warranty on my Galaxy Tab (which comes from the US), which states that the original purchaser must return the device to an authorised service facility.

It's also very different to the wording of the warranty on my Galaxy Nexus, which is in an altogether different format.

The LTE version is not that bad. Then again I have two batteries, one being the extended battery plus I use a custom ROM, kernel, and undervolt lol. It's very efficient at idle or near idle. I try to use wifi whenever I can too.

Well 2 whole days with the EVO LTE and man its been nice. Sense 4 is pretty nice and the battery life is pretty darn good for what the phone has under the hood. The only concern I have is when LTE comes online and how the battery will drain, but Im hopeful.
