Wow almost $1K for the 64gb S4. Wonder what it'll cost for an upgrade.

I'd take 3 Nexus 4's over a GS4 thank you very much.
-
Wow. You sound just like my friend, "I'd take a dozen iPhones over any Android..."
-
I'm reading over at XDA about the GS4 and there's chatter of the phone not being supported by real quality developers. If I get the S4 it'd be nice to keep for a few years. CM has kept my Captivate running strong. What happened between Samsung and developers that would cause them to focus on other phones?
Think there is any merit to the rumors? I'm not to concerned with losing gimick features like eye scrolling or eye pausing my videos. Those will probably be turned off permanently from day one. Lol

Short answer? Exynos.
There's almost no documentation and nothing source wise, except the decrepit code drops from SOSRC. Every Qualcomm device is supported by the OEM and CodeAurora. The code at CodeAurora is directly contributed to by Qualcomm themselves, making any of the Snapdragon platforms VERY developer friendly.
With the i9100/N7000 there were a MOUNTAIN of issues with the hardware renderer, audio, surface flinger... that devs got so fed up that they said that there's going to be less development on future platforms, unless Samsung releases source. -
So, if you buy the US version, you're fine(development wise).
-
Good to know. I don't travel internationally much to take the phone. When I do its for the army.

Or you can get a Nexus 4.
Is there any news on what the Nexus 5 is going to be actually based on? I read a couple articles recently that LG may get another bite at the apple on another Nexus device, maybe something based off the Optimus G Pro? -
Newsflash, all currently released phones are better than the Nexus 4.
Well, we still down,t know for sure if that's the case with Exynos 5. To see if it's going to be developer friendly, just look at the Nexus 10. If it has good development then the S4 will have too.
Anyway, I've already decided that my next phone will probably be a Sony or HTC. I want to vary a bit, to prevent from being always Samsung. I have nothing against Sammy, it's just I want variety and I want to try out HTC's premium builds. -
Not from a value and software perspective.
-
Yep, that's pretty much how I feel.
-
How to push your company out of the market. -
Well looks like I'm going to have to pass on the S4. Looks like uncle Sam feels I need to serve the people of Kazakhstan.
Maybe an S5 will relieve my Captivate of its faithful service in due time. Maybe an S4 if I return in time.

It seems that the S4 in the UK will have the Snapdragon SoC.
If that's correct, then I'm thinking that maybe the LTE models are getting Snapdragon and the 3G-only ones will get Exynos.
I'm hoping it's an error though. -

Jagshemash!
Bahahaha 760 bucks! -
Okay, that's TWICE the price of a Nexus 4 for an unlocked phone, and it's got not subsidized on any carrier, so that's the only way to get it.
Yeah, I don't see that working out well for them. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Hmm... I have to disagree. The Nexus 4 is QUITE a capable device, even though in synthetic benches it falls a bit short. Google is trying to balance a completely buttery UI with decent battery life. IMO, it's working pretty nicely. They have some really good code optimization on their stock builds.
The Nexus 10 only has decent support because Google is practically Samsung's only customer for Exynos 5250. Also, the SoC differences between 5410 and 5250 are gigantic. Completely different CPU structure, completely different GPU architecture... and likely lots more. It's doubtful that anything will be able to be taken away, source wise, from the Nexus 10.
EDIT: Also, since 5410 will probably stay a Samsung exclusive, meaning no external "sponsors", code drops will be handled the same way they always have from Samsung... crappy.
If Samsung ships ANY model of GS4 with no LTE, I'm not quite sure how I feel about that. Unlocked or not, at this point all the basebands support LTE pretty much. And in the US, Verizon and AT&T are mandated by law to allow unlocked LTE devices on their network. -
Wasn't that dual-SIM model that had the teardown leaked before the announcement 3G-only?
And if the international LTE model (which will be the one the UK gets) isn't Exynos, I doubt any will be. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
And I'm confused too.
They need to just make them all Exynos or all Snapdragon. Pick one. Both can use the same MDM9615 baseband. Supply issues? Don't care. -
My thoughts exactly.
Hopefully I should be able to find out more in the next few days. -
They should just design Exynos to work with LTE
-
Definitely.
Though my assumption may be incorrect, there may be an LTE model with the Exynos5 Octa. -
Megacharge Custom User Title
Just thought I would post this, in case anyone was interested in the HTC One's gaming performance.
-
Where I live, the 16GB Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE GT-i9505 (1.9 GHz Snapdragon 600) retails for $900 off contract, while the 32GB HTC One is only about $40 cheaper than the former. European prices might not be the best to go by but internationally speaking, I think the bigger mistake was to not get it into consumers' hands sooner.
-
Interestingly enough, Sony removed the price tag off the ZL's page. Hopefully they come to their senses and price the device accordingly with the rest of the competitors, because certain places that have the ZL pre-ordered is offering for $575-$625 pending on where you look. The 16 GB Snapdragon version of the GS4 is rumored to be $579 and the 32 GB One is supposedly in the ball park. Marking up the ZL to be nearly $200 more than the other two makes no sense when the device has a notably inferior screen and a SoC that is already 'old'. Looks will only take it so far, and for me, it definitely is not going to make the $200 difference.
-
The 64GB Developer Edition HTC One is only 650 in the US...
-
I wasn't trying to say that Sony doesn't have to adjust that price to stay competitive in the US. As TailGunner noted, the Xperia ZL's feature set isn't quite up there with the Optimus G Pro, Samsung Galaxy S 4 and the HTC One, so it should cost less. In several parts of Europe, the ZL's price is actually a bit lower than what Sony Mobile US listed, and that doesn't add up. What I was trying to say is that outside of the US the pricing isn't necessarily what should take the blame when Sony expectantly fails to sell as many devices as they would have wished for.
-
-
^ That's good. I would imagine the Exynos version will be getting an unofficial CM anyways, but just will never get a 'M' build.
I'm really liking the Xperia SP, the only crutch is the 8 GB internal memory though. Might be a pretty good handset if off-contract price stays at $400-$449 like the current SL.
-
^ whats the deal with the washout at the bottom of the screen?
-
That would be Sony's TFT screen that they have been using since the Xperia S. Good screen if viewing directly head-on, but one of the worst when it comes to viewing angles.
-
I'm looking at different carriers and I have to say, our SIM only options in the US really suck.
-
Which carriers have you look at?
-
All of them. All the AT&T MVNOs, T-Mo, T-Mo's MVNOs, etc. The only one that interests me is Solavei, but T-Mo's coverage in my area isn't very good. Way behind VZW and ATT and I think even Sprint.
-
If you don't plan on making international calls or tether, I would look at NET10. They use a mix of T-Mobile and AT&T network so coverage should be fairly robust.
-
The only thing is that Net10's AT&T sim plans are capped at 1.5GB of data, even though they're labeled as unlimited. I regularly use 2+ GB a month.
-
Did you check out Red Pocket? A flat $60 for unlimited minuted and texts plus 2GB of data.
I can't seem to find an AT&T MVNO that offers more than 2GB of data. You could go the MEdia Net route. Find a phone that AT&T can't detect as a smartphone, and you get unlimited everything for $50 a month. The Canadian RAZR HD is undetectable, I just purchased one for $350.

Maybe it is like T-Mobile's plans, you always get unlimited but after your set amount like 2-5 GB, you get throttled down to 3G speeds. I just picked up the unlimited plan like 2 months ago on T-Mobile, no more worrying. -
Nope, it seems to be a hard cap.
I guess I'll probably end up going with some variant of T-Mo if I do the unlocked route. -
Anyone else seen anything about this 'Minuum' keyboard?

That Minuum keyboard does seem to work pretty well.
Also, what ROMs are people running on their Note 2? I have the AT&T version. Been running it stock till now so I will need to root it and whatnot. Any kernels that you all recommend? I am thinking I may run Paranoid Android? It worked pretty well on the original Note I had. -
CarbonROM. The best. Using it on my N7100 and my friend is also using on his t0lte/N7105, and this is hands down the best and smoothest ROM. Excellent battery life as well, usually lasts me a day and a half.
-
Thank you. I saw that ROM and thought it looked pretty sweet. I'll definitely give it a try. I just rooted my phone and installed CWM. Any kernel I should install? Also, any tips for before or after I install Carbon? I'll backup my homescreen with Nova.
-
I'm still shocked everytime someone whips out a Note, both the OG and 2. The size is just ginormous.
Sent from my DROID3 using Tapatalk 2 -
Even I am shocked when I see others do the same haha. It feels so much smaller in your own hand than when you see someone else handling it.
-
Just installed everything. Seems pretty nice so far. Have you messed any with performance controls? What governor do you use? Thanks for your help.
EDIT: The only thing I miss with this ROM is no one-hand operation settings.
EDIT EDIT: Also, what messaging app is everyone using? -
When I used Fandango to buy movie tickets, I had to hand my phone to the guy at the theatre(some confirmation # or something). I had a Note II at the time, and he did a double take and flipped it around in his hands to get a feel for it.
