That, on top of AT&T's newly announced price parity between the base HTC One 32GB and base Galaxy S4 16GB... does indeed spell bad news for HTC.

At the Extreme preset (1080p, max details), the GT-I9505 scored 6904, the HTC One 6272, the GT-I9500 6068, the Nexus 4 5910 and the Optimus G Pro 5474. The graphics score for the Adreno 320 in the GT-I9505 is 6481, while the SGX 544MP3 in the GT-I9500 got 5527, making it the culprit of the lower average score on the GT-I9500. Poorly optimised benchmark, pre-release ROM, worse GPU (at least for the task) or a mix? -
I wonder if the difference in RAM being used (LPDDR2 in the One/Optimus G Pro versus the I9505's LPDDR3) is accounting for the rather large margin here or is the extra 200 MHz making the difference? I am curious as to if the DDR2 will eventually become a bottleneck for 1080p gaming with the current SoC at some point as well...
-
I find it odd how the Sharp AQUOS PHONE ZETA SH-09D manages to come in second regardless of preset... 3DMark for Android doesn't seem all that credible in its current iteration.
-
Yeah Futuremark need to implement a way to report the SoC and GPU's clock speed as well. The SH-09D can be rooted, so that person could be overclocking the phone. With all the different resolutions available, it's difficult to get a common ground with all of the devices out there. I'm sure someone with a grossly overclocked Nexus 4 or Optimus G can be probably take the top spot if they want to. There's also the smaller, full fledged devices like the RAZR M and One S as well, which runs the full speed MSM8960 but only has to push a measly qHD resolution.
-
The phones are supposed to run the test at the same settings, resolution included:
Given that a lot of users running the benchmark have tweaked their phones in one way or the other, I definitely agree that reporting the average score for each device is not enough. Hopefully Futuremark will include more than just the Ice Storm test further down the road in addition to better indexing. I do like the idea of 3DMark on Android along with cross-platform benchmarking, so it would be nice to see it turn into a reputable source of performance comparisons.
EDIT: The LG Optimus 2X is in the device channel, despite being half a gigabyte of RAM short of meeting the device requirements. I reckon devices without a product image are user submitted to the page, and there are quite a few of those.
EDIT 2: 3DMark in its current form clearly favours Qualcomm. The Nexus 10 with its Mali-T604 falls short of the Adreno-based competition by a larger margin, while the Mali-400MP-equipped Galaxy Note 2 will leave you with something closer to a slideshow. The gap between the GT-I9505 and GT-I9500 is starting to make a lot more sense. -
The Note 10 has an Exynos 4412 with Mali 400MP4 same as Note 2 AFAIK. The Nexus 10 had the T604.
On 3DMark Ice Storm Extreme I got 3119, just around half off the S4. Not bad I say, for a 3 year old GPU. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Not bad, indeed. Though the Mali-400MP has been stretched way beyond what it was intended for. Exynos 4412 is Mali-400's extreme use case. -
True. Did another run, got 3250, again in the Extreme preset. Safe to assume that it ranges from 3100-3400 in score. Can't do more runs because this is a terrible app because it now crashes every time it runs, or try to open a recent run. /derp

Ah, yes. I meant the Nexus 10, not the Note 10.1. I believe I didn't include that mistake the first time around but a misclick along with my login session having expired led me to rewrite that part, and I did so rather carelessly it would seem.
You're comparing total (CPU & GPU) average scores though? Also, your performance has been tweaked. The N7100's average score is 2524, not that the performance isn't to be interpreted as stellar, all things considered. -
Just realized that my Carbon Rom doesn't play gifs that are stored locally or even through Tapatalk. Any way to fix that?

Being 'First' may be a bad thing for HTC | Android Central
Not that I'm for HTC's complete failure, but it is kind of entertaining to watch them do this to themselves. -
The exchange they put on there was funny:
Instead of "Who's on first?"... it's "One or First?". -
HTC diminishing their branding while working with other companies started last year. The 8X, the "signature" Windows Phone? It's official model name is "Windows Phone 8X." Nokia doesn't do that with the Lumia line; Samsung doesn't do that with the Ativ line. Microsoft's branding is as prominent on the phone as HTC's is.
And I find it very interesting that if you deactivate Facebook Home on the First, you get vanilla Android instead of getting Sense. -
Wha?
Windows Phone branding has always been way more prominent on Samsung phones. It's just that they always, but always, put it in a location which would be obscured by your hand when holding it to your ear, while the Samsung logo remains visible.
Along with the Lumia, the 8X is one of the phones least Windows Phone branded - but it's invariably immediately recognisable as one, because of the understated but individual design which sets it aside from (some of HTC's own included) 'trying too hard' fluff Androids. -
For some reason, the last few CM nightlies for the Note 2 has been causing some excessive battery drain in idle state. 'Android OS' continues to be in the awake state and is the culprit here, but I can't figure what is causing this and rebooting the phone hasn't stopped it either.

That seems to be a CM kernel issue. I'm using NEAK and I'm not seeing anything like that. -
Danke. Just flashed the SOAP 3.0.70 kernel and hopefully it'll stop, CM has gotten practically bug-free for the t0lte and I'd hate to revert back to factory firmware just because of that.

That is not good. I'd wager that if they're not in a worse place than RIM or even Nokia at this point, then they're really, really close.
-
I was actually considering the HTC One, but with them doing so poorly it may have thrown it out completely. Don't want to be left with an unsupported phone. best go with someone who isn't about to go out of business...
-
I wouldn't let HTC's current situation affect your decision to at least try the One just yet. Worse case scenario, a Chapter 11 process would likely occur so the company undergoes some internal restructuring and debt reconciliation, not simply going belly up overnight. The only person that probably can't sleep at night for the next few months is probably Peter Chou since he is gambling with his job on the One's success.
I have to admit though, this year for Android smartphones is starting to look a lot like 2012 with Samsung dominating. All the flagship headsets announced and release thus far has been pretty disappointing; the Xperia Z/ZL fell way short of what everyone thought it would be, all the delays and component shortages with the HTC One, and the only X-factor that could make a dent in Samsung's Android domination is the Google/Motorola X phone. The LG Optimus G Pro looks like a pretty nice headset, but it caters to a niche crowd that ultimately will not have much impact to Samsung as a whole. -
Yep... 2013 looks like the year of the...

It's a bit difficult to rebuke against 1400 Samsung shops in Best Buy with HTC's main focus of eight major cities.
I'm probably going to pre-order the 64 GB Developer's Edition next week. Let's see what the fuss is all about. -

I wasn't saying it was, just showing that there is some marketing fight in them.
Nice, I wish I could spare the cash. 649$ for 64GB's of storage, sim and bootloader unlocked seems pretty decently priced. -

Perpetual presence in 1400 Best Buys > 3 months in a malls.
How many malls are there? -
There's a lot of malls, but HTC won't be in every mall, the mall atmosphere is pretty bad for actually being able to hold one's attention for long...at the smaller, less crowded/noisy BB, the Samsung people can have a more intimate (for lack of a better word) experience with the customer.

Just got a hands-on with one a short bit ago. I have to admit, I did not expect this device to impress me much at all, but for $449 off-contract, it's a really good phone. As Mitlov stated, disabling the Facebook Home reverts the device back to vanilla Android. For a mid-range device, it runs very well and the only glaring omission for me would be the lack of a MicroSD card slot. Otherwise, disable Facebook Home and you have yourself a very competent device for less than $450 new; I see it being a more elegant, refined version of the Rezound with the same screen, size (but thinner), and a Snapdragon 400 SoC instead of the terrible Snapdragon S3. I'm going to pick one up this Friday.
-
TailGunner buys ALL the phones.
any thoughts on how Home performed/worked?
-
Performance wise, it's well optimized and doesn't seem to drag the phone down. I'm not a big Facebook person so I don't care much for it, but at least it doesn't bog the phone down to the point where it's unusable. I don't care for the contact bubbles popping up everywhere you go though, it's more of an annoyance than a convenience. I can't find it in the options, but I hope there's an adjustable sync policy somewhere because I can see all its features are always online (Chat, live news feed, picture syncing) and can kill the battery pretty quickly.

There is one S4 in the whole of Scotland.
But I don't have it

lol. I am a Windows Phone trainer in the US, and run in to at least 1 samsung rep a day that has the Galaxy SIV. I wish there was only one in all of the US
-
That doesn't surprise me, things do seem to be more US-centric than normal.

Bet you lots of money those weren't the Exynos models.
Those seem to be an extreme rarity. -
And my "buyer's guilt" is setting in. I don't really need a tablet, and it would be more prudent to sell it to get money for school.
Was good while it lasted.

I havent updated my ROM in about two months because I've been so busy, one of these I really should. Phone seems to be running quite slow. Cant wait till I can get my S IV
Any news on which CPU variant the USA Sprint version will be?

it's going the be the snapdragon

Someone I know indirectly is due for an upgrade on AT&T (2-year contract). Budget is $50 max, and they prefer Samsung and Android, so the refurbished Galaxy S III for $29.99 is looking pretty good. Any reason not to go with this? Are AT&T's refurbs bad?
-
90-day warranty, and if you buy with some credit cards, they'll double the warranty to give you a total of 6 months, which is probably ample time to notice any actual defects. I'd say it's a good deal!
-
Put a screen protector on my Note 2 finally. It holds fingerprints like crazy and scratches incredibly easy. There are a handful of annoying lines scratched onto already and all I've done with it is carry it in my pocket and put it on my desk to charge.. Bummer.
-
Funny you said that. I just took mine off today. It was so annoying. Constantly with finger prints and one annoying little bubble that had captured a speck.
-
Man, that was quickly!
I'm the same though, I don't use my Tab for much other than checking some emails and such. Though it'll be good to have when I deploy. I see mine as an entertainment device for when I travel. Movies, reading while listening to music, ect.

I've found the quality of the refurbs to vary greatly, since it's not the OEM that's doing the refubishment. It's some company that AT&T contracts. I've actually had several phones arrive with scratches and dings... like they're selling "scratch and dent" instead of "certified refurbished".
The Note II screen scratches easy, or the screen protector?
Honestly, I've not had any problems with scratches. I'm using a speck case with no screen protector, and in formal settings a Samsung Flip Cover.
