Thanks. From my little bit of research so far I'm strongly leaning towards the HTC One.

It's a shame you're on Verizon with IFA right around the corner, but I guess the cellular conditions in your area calls for it. There are a few things that I'd like to add to the HTC One vs Samsung Galaxy S4 debate off the top of my head:
• The HTC One (Verizon) is not supported by the CyanogenMod team, while the S4 is. Samsung also has a better track record when it comes to updating their devices.
• Aluminium, though it looks and feels nice, does not equate to a better build quality than what you can achieve with polycarbonate. It's also more prone to dents and scratches.
• The S4 and One both have an S600 SoC, but it's clocked higher in the S4. Along with software optimisations, this makes for a minor performance difference. Have a look at the SunSpider scores.
• IIRC, the S4 has better thermal efficiency.
• IIRC, the HTC One has a loftier max volume output thanks to the additional amplifier.
• The HTC One's UltraPixel works better on paper than it does in real life. The situation's improved through firmware updates, but the S4 remains one of the best mobile shooters out there.
• The HTC One got a 48-hour battery life endurance rating in GSMArena's tests, while the Galaxy S4 got 69 hours.
• Samsung's TouchWiz ROMs and CyanogenMod appear to be the only ones that don't suffer from a low bitpool bluetooth audio issue. -
Spent whole thursday trying to root my HTC one V, with no avail.
R.I.P chances of removing bloatware
Do i need Windows 7 to root the phone? I was using Windows 8. -
Which carrier was it bought from? Did you try One Click Root? Did you fail to install a custom recovery image?
-
Bell is my carrier (Canada).
Tried One click root, tried the steps on HTC Dev center, tried plenty of rooting programs, all to no avail. -
If you follow this guide, how far do you get before you run into issues? The guide is for unlocking the bootloader which is the first step of the ROM flashing process for your phone.
-
I type in "fastboot devices" and nothing appears.
-
If you've followed all the steps correctly, verify that the device shows up in device manager like it should while in fastboot mode. Run CMD as an administrator and point it to the fastboot folder instead (type "CD C:\Fastboot" without the quotation marks if that's where your folder is). If possible, you can try starting over on another PC.
-
As always, when people ask for recs, I go with the phone that will usually have the most support both from primary and 3rd party accessories.
Like the iPhone, I think the Galaxy series is the best supported of the Android phones and between the X, One and S4, only the S4 has an SD slot.
Memory is so cheap yet makers are skimping on it and using more of it. If the new iPhone 5S doesn't start at $199 with 32GB, that will anger me very much. -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Why would they decrease the price? It's about $$$. 199 would be the 16 GB most likely like the current iPhone 5. I paid 299 for my 32 GB iPhone 5.

I got the HTC One V because it costed me 0$....
-
To compete.
My wife's 16GB iPhone constantly gets filled up and it's mostly from pictures/videos. She doesn't want to delete them because then it defeats the purpose of having access to them (yeah I know, cloud blahblahblah).
Since you can't expand an iPhone's memory, the smarter move would be for Apple to start putting more memory in the "base" model. They did it before... if you recall, the base iPhone was 4GB and then the 3G was 8GB. -

Gah. I hate Verizon.
With new service it costs $199 with two year contract. I've been on my sister's plan, text and talk only. For any upgrade the only options I have are $599 and month to month or $0 and $24.95/month. Also it says my phone is eligible for upgrade until 2015 when I've had this LG piece of crap since 2011 on a two year contract. I went on chat to ask about it... and they asked for the PASSWORD! The freaking account password!? Any other service they for one don't know your password because it's encrypted, and two, any service I've ever used says that you should never provide your password for security reasons and because they shouldn't know it anyways.
That is kind of disconcerting that they can see your password. -
Are you sure they're asking for the Google account password and not your Verizon billing account password? I have a US Cellular password I use to log onto US Cellular's member webpage; it's not related to my Google password.
As for how much you're paying and how infrequently you can upgrade, I moved from Verizon to US Cellular and didn't look back. Cheaper family plans, and I'm eligible for a new device about every 15 months if I use all the US Cellular points I earn by paying my bill on time and put them toward an "upgrade accelerator." And US Cellular has the best customer service in the industry, by far. They're wonderful to work with, both in-store and by phone. -
They were asking for the Verizon account password. I know I initiated the chat but still, asking for passwords is the biggest no no on the internet since it was invented. Plus it's my sister's account password and not mine, and she made me an administrator on the account too. So how the heck am I supposed to manage anything with them? I have to go to my sister all the time?
US Cellular website only shows fair coverage and it states may not even be able to get calls inside buildings where I live... thanks for the suggestion though. The thing is that I'm on my sister's plan which will only cost me $40/mo for text, phone, data. She's not going to change because she gets a discount and her whole family (ex-husband, kids) are on it. If I go with anywhere else on my own, it's minimum $65-70/mo. I'm going to call tomorrow or go to a Verizon store and see what my real options are. I'd much rather pay $200 and get locked in a 2 year contract than pay $600 or a monthly fee. I hate monthly fees. I'd pay a full year's worth of cell bill up front if I could.
There is a regional carrier here that keeps advertising $40/mo for text, phone, data, and I looked into it, and it's 1GB data, and taxes and fees, etc comes out to closer to $60 and coverage is only good in certain areas and you have to buy the phone up front. -
Does the Nexus 4 work on their network? Because that's going for a ridiculously good $199 right now.

Nope Nexus 4 is GSM only, no CDMA/Verizon LTE support.

AT&T's launching a new prepaid brand called Aio Wireless that has some very compelling pricing. 55 bucks a month including taxes and fees for unlimited talk/text and 2 GB of 4G data with AT&T's more solid network footprint than T-Mobile.
It's only available in certain markets at the moment but will be available nationwide later this September. Aio Wireless to offer nationwide prepaid cellular service in September
It's sold out and is officially discontinuted by Google: 8GB Nexus 4 sells out on Google Play, and it isn't coming back | The Verge -
Hey guys, I have my Samsung Galaxy S Captivate. I don't really need it since I picked up a Droid Razr XT912 for the low low price of $Free.99. The Captivate still works great, just gets bogged down. What I'm looking for is a bare minimum ROM. It currently has CM 10.1 on it. All I really need it to do, is play music, and connect to Wi-Fi so I can stream Pandora from time to time. Other that that the phone won't net any money since it's so old, and I have no other use for it.
As far as the Razr, its a great phone, and I'd love to upgrade the battery and back cover to that of the Razr Maxx, but since it was a free phone, and an upgrade to the Captivate, I don't see putting money into it as worth it. I'll just pick up a new phone when I go home. Till then I suppose I can deal with the battery and just hook up to a charger from time to time. Unless someone here has a busted broken Razr maxx
I'd throw some money their way.
Anyhow anyone know of a very light weight bare min ROM for the Captivate? I don't need the phone to make calls, or text or anything like that. -
You might be surprised, I've seen them on Craigslist every now and then for $80-$120 pending on condition. The Wolfson DAC in these phones make them ideal audio players.
-
MS buying Nokia... I think RIM is dead man walking.
-
Wow, didn't know that. I looked at some stuff online here and there. Also checked the gimmick at the mall where you can get ripped off and it offered me like <$4 lol. I those tags at the mall are for people who steal phones to be honest. They offer such low prices.
Anyhow that's what I was thinking, keep it as an audio player. That with my other 4 iPods lol. Just need to find a simple ROM. It has an extended 3300mah battery so that's the nice thing about it. Screen is in mint condition since I've had an invisible shield on it since day one

So much for Key Lime Pie, LOL. So the next revision is going to be Android 4.4 Kit Kat. -

When I first heard about that I had to make sure it was actually September, not April. Such a weird choice of name. -
"Break me off a piece of that Kit Kat bar"
Should have stayed generic. -
Android KLP vs Android KK.
I'd have chosen KLP any day just because of the danger that the acronym KK may bring in accidental overtypes. -
I wonder if they're paying Nestlé for the trademark or Nestlé is paying them for the advertising. Either way, it just strikes me as crass.

They both are paying Apple
.

One thing for certain though, with this news and the Nexus 4 in fire sale mode, we should see Android 4.4 and the Nexus 5 in a month or so.
This new Android sticks out like a sore thumb in front of the Google office. -
Have you seen the crossmarketing?
Google
Another funny thing is KitKat is actually made by Hershey's in the US, licensing from Nestle.
I joked on Engadget that the next Android will be Laffy Taffy or Lifesaver. -

In that case I hope they release the Android Twinkie. -
As random and baffling as the "Focus and a Dell" cross-marketing between Dell and Ford a decade back.

Of course it's not bad, everyone's freaking out because of a name. Nothing will change on Google's end.Last edited by a moderator: May 12, 2015

WAIT! Wha... WHAT!? What did you say?!?!?
EDIT: Nevermind. I thought you said something in reverse.
I consider Kit Kat much better a name for android than Key Lime Pie.

Nexus 5 possibly leaked at KitKat statue unveiling. Look at the phone the Google employee in green has. Anyone recognize it?
Google's KitKat statue unveiling may have leaked a new Nexus phone (update: video removed) -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
It's slightly bigger than the Nexus 4 the lady has on the right...looks about right for a 5-5.5" next generation Nexus phone.
-
It looks similar to the Xperia Z1, IMO.
Sent from my iPhone -
Camera's not in quite the right place for it to be Z1 based IMO. The Z1 pushes it even further into that corner--maybe 1cm further.
-
Whatever it is, Google's yanking the videos offline pretty quickly. The printing on one side of the device looks like the right shape for the LG logo, and when compared with the Nexus 4 next to it, it's definitely a 5" screen device.
-
Agreed.
I wonder which current phone it's based on, if any. The Z1 was the closest I could think of, but like you mentioned, the camera position is different.
Sent from my iPhone -
I think I know what that is. ZTE's new flagship, the Grand S, has the camera and the flash in exactly the right place, has a 5" screen, and even has the same curved corners. The Nexus 4 brought LG from second-tier to mainstream; could Google and ZTE be hoping to do the same for ZTE with the Nexus 5?
All in the Grand S - ZTE Corporation -
If it is, I certainly hope they increase the battery capacity. 1780mah isn't nearly enough.
EDIT: Check out the Grand S Flex. It looks pretty similar, but includes a 2300mah battery. That still probably wont be enough though :/ -

Is it impossible for it to be a G2 with a redesigned PCB and thus also a different camera placement? It was pretty obvious that the Nexus 5 wouldn't have the volume rocker of the G2, so the removal of it would allow for more liberty when it comes to the placement, at least on the drawing board. That said, it would be interesting to see a lesser-known manufacturer behind the new Nexus.
-
Not impossible at all, Google has already proved it is not afraid to depart from the base model's design (Optimus G and the Nexus 4) to fit the requirements, or in the Galaxy Nexus' case, come up with a design from scratch.
The argument I have against the ZTE handsets is that the Grand S' specifications are a massive downgrade to the Nexus 4, so that's an automatic out. The Grand S Flex uses the exact same SoC in the Nexus 4, so at best it's a sidestep to the Nexus 4. I'm going to stick with my guns and say the Nexus 5 is G2 based. -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Doesn't Google have control over what specs are in it? I though with the Nexus S it shared the same chassis as the Galaxy S but slightly different specs, but Samsung being the OEM for both isn't an issue?

Absolutely, although in order to reduce costs, it would be better for them to use an existing product's internal components.
