I got one as a gift from work... I have to say, that after actually using it for a while, there's no other phone that even comes close to it's feel. When they said it's kind of like an old Leica, they actually mean it... srsly.
I patiently await the day Android gets a device with that build feeling. HTC has come the closest with their unibody frames, but in the end, it's just nowhere near the same "elegance" or fit-n-finish.![]()

So, does anyone have any information on how to de-ODEX my phone, and any good ROM's for the Intercept on VM?
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
To de-ODEX... use this tool... [Release] xUltimate - Droid Forum - Verizon Droid & the Motorola Droid Forum
About ROM's, I'm not sure. Since the VM Intercept technically can't be flashed with Sprint ROM's. -
I've heard that Sprint ROM's technically can be flashed, but it changes the baseband and it causes stuff like media messages and voicemail to not work. For a while there, a lot of VM Intercept users were using the Sprint FroYo ROM because the Intercept on Sprint got that update almost six entire months before they started pushing it out on VM.
This phone just gets more annoying by the day...now my GPS no longer seems to function, as my automatic weather updates constantly fail at "retrieving location". >_< -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
I know that feeling. I remember when we were just coming out with the Backflip and I was stuck with that thing for the better part of 3 months. Worst 3 months ever. It just continually got slower and slower, and things would sometimes work and sometimes I was just SOL.
-
I really want to just wipe everything and install a good ROM from scratch, but I don't even know where to begin. I saw a screenshot of a custom ROM of some sort running on the Sprint version of my phone that had over 60MB of free memory...I'm lucky if I ever have 30MB, and that's running Advanced Task Killer several times a day and having deleted most of the VM apps.
-
I've sent you a PM, (was working so I didn't get a chance sooner) but just so we're clear, are you sure that's a Droid 1?
...Droid 1's are Google Experience devices so they shouldn't have any Verizon preloaded apps. I don't recall seeing any when I got mine.
I didn't realize it had a IPS screen, ya learn something new everyday!
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
You make a good point. I didn't even think about that... but yea, it shouldn't. Maybe those are just his old apps that he didn't get rid of?
But yep... The OG Droid had one of the best mobile phone panels out, that (at the time) put the iPhone to shame! And yep... IPS.
-
I formatted the Droid 1, so it's 100% stock. The programs I wanted to get rid of were for example Amazon MP3. Not sure if the others (ie. Music (player), Google Talk, etc.) are necessary either but I don't use them. I'm currently reading up the link you sent me for rooting it.
-
No problem, the Gallery, Music player, Calender and some others like Messaging are a part of the base Android image (I'm probably using the wrong wording but whatever)
Talk is one component of what makes the Droid one a Google Experience phone: All Google Experience devices have all of the Google Mobile apps installed: Talk, G-Mail, Maps w/ Navigation, News & Weather, YouTube, Market, etc.
The good thing about rooting is that you can remove the ones you don't want, the tutorial i gave you will show you how.
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Don't remove Talk... It's integral with GMail, I believe. Deleting it will cause odd quirks in GMail... like not receiving or it not working at all. At least that's how it is on the Captivate ROM's.
-
Root Droid 1 - regardless of OS version - Droid Forum - Verizon Droid & the Motorola Droid Forum
Excellent guide - thanks for the link. Worked like a charm and now I'm rooted! I'm going to read up a bit on ROMs before I go into that. Not going to touch anything, still pretty much on the stock Moto stuff for now. -
Awesome, glad you got it working.
-
Looking at Bugless since I've been reading it's one of the (if not the) fastest ROM as it's pretty simple and that's one of the biggest selling points for me. Cyanogenmod is second to test if Bugless doesn't seem to work for me. Seems more feature packed but probably won't be using most of them. Which ROMs have you tried and why did you pick your current ROM over others? (general question for anyone, but please also specify which phone you're using)
-
I need help with my intercept... can't wait for that new uber high end motorola virgin mobile phone. 1 ghz snapdragon.... so futuristic...
Hate the intercept but man, Virgin mobile FTW! -
Megacharge Custom User Title
Just be careful with Motorola phones, some of the upcoming ones are rumored to have locked bootloaders.
-
Yeah, but anything is a step up coming from my intercept. Contract free is the way to be. That is my mantra.
-
I've used Froyo version's of the following:
Bugless Beast
Cyanogen Mod (6)
Ultimate Droid 2.5
Project Elite - what I'm on now
I've used one Gingerbread ROM, a early build created by the guy behind Bugless Beast. I quickly learned that, while nice, GB needed some work to actually be usable on the phone (GB's default RAM management is super aggressive and would kill apps in the background way too often + there were some radio issues) and I wen't back to froyo. Now though, it should work fine. I might try upgrading later today.
Bugless Beast is great if you wan't something as close to stock as possible. It's notorious in Droid 1 circles for being rock solid and stable. However, I felt constrained a bit and wanted something with more tweaks and options to play with so I moved on to CM 6, which was nice but felt a bit slow. Ultimate Droid 2.5 became a favorite of mine, and I've moved to Project Elite just because I wanted to try something different. -
Do you really have an Intercept on VM, or are you just trying really hard to be me?
-
..........
-
You two are silly....
By the way, does this siggy/avatar make my butt look big? -
^
Yes, yes it does

I'm currently thinking about either getting a Galaxy S2 to replace my n900 or buy a tablet to replace my ipad. I'm stuck with samsung when it comes to android because they are the only ones who read 720p mkv files natively and gpu accelerated. I haven't seen any tablet do that. Any suggestions?
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
That and Samsung has a wonderful, unlocked, bootloader.
And nope, nothing besides the Galaxy Tab's by Samsung play MKV... but the Galaxy Tab's will play 1080p MKV's!
-
Just downloaded Bugless Beast V0.6.2.1 (Gingerbread/Froyo). Gonna read up a bit before I load it up! Trying to figure out how to load a kernel.
Ok problem - I have ROM Manager installed and flashed but when I clicked backup current ROM, it just restarts twice. I tried to find it in Astro after I couldn't find my backup in manage/restore backups and there is no file... I don't have that many programs and my SD card is only using 1GB of the 16GB (15.19GiB). -
^ Did you flash ClockworkMod Recovery in ROM Manager first? (its the first thing in there)
Then after just reboot into recovery, do a Nandroid backup (youll see "backup" in there). Then wipe cache/user data, Flash zip from SD Card, and select your ROM
To backup stuff to restore on your next ROM, use Titanium Backup. The Nandroid backups are for a failsafe if you mess up your phone. -
I thought I did, but apparently I didn't... I flashed it again and it worked. Blah. Thanks.
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
For some reason, I've always had to flash ClockworkMod twice to get it to work. Don't know why though. -
Good Good
np
-
And now, just backing things up with Titanium backup before I load BB up!
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
A note about Titanium also.. LOL. Don't restore system apps to any ROM other than the one they came from. Doing so will usually cause endless force-closes. -
What constitutes a system app? Cuz I just restored FB and Google Maps is exploding... Should I wipe and just reload the ROM? Also, can't seem to load my text messages, even though I manually restored the data... I have my contacts, call log, calendar and everything else except my texts...
-
System apps are the pre-loaded "non-deletable" apps that come pre-installed on your phone, in the /system/app folder that can only be accessed if you have root privileges. Google Maps is definitely one of those. Facebook also came as a system app on my Intercept, although I'm not sure if all phones include it like that.
-
Yeah i would just uninstall them and reinstall from market, that should fix it.
But yeah Google Maps is a no, facebook i wouldnt think would be a problem. -
Aww poo. Ok I'll just clear everything and reinstall the ROM. Battery seems to last longer now, but charging is slower too...
-
But the Tab 7 will never an official Honeycomb update... And I've just learned that Tegra 2 kinda sucks at decoding H264 since it doesn't support the High profile
...
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Well, none of them support AC3, so why would you have high-profile with stereo? O_O
Personally, there will be a great port of Honeycomb to the Galaxy Tab once HC source is published, but it won't support MKV's with hardware support without Samsung's help.
Really, I hope Samsung changes to Exynos on their tablets. Tegra 2 isn't all that great, IMO. The Exynos SoC with the Mali 400 supports high-profile 1080p HDMI output! -
I've been searching for a good VM Intercept ROM for days, and I found this:
[ROM] bROM v1.1 EC07(JIT v2, Vampirefos Kernel, More tweaks!!)
It's the only one I've found that says it was made for the VM version with EC07 baseband rather than Sprint/DF27 or DL05. I really don't know anything about custom ROM's, so can anyone tell me if this looks legit/worth installing? -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Let me download it and tear it apart real quick.
I'll get right back with ya.
EDIT: After tear apart and inspection... I like it! It sticks to "simple is better", plus it's gingerbread themed and features JIT. You'd probably really enjoy it! -
Probably a little later but here's my take on backing up...
You use Titanium Backup for games and SMS Backup and Restore for text messages.
Google's got your back on contacts, so what else do you need? -
I think I'll just use Go SMS's backup next time, saves the extra program. I've reloaded the BB ROM and everything is good. Stress testing the 1GHz LV kernel now. Hopefully by the time I come back from lunch it will still be running fine, then will try the 100% OC (1.2GHz LV)!
-
Nice
I run mine at 1.2
-
I wish the lowest clock setting would stop getting pushed up, but that is probably unavoidable if the clock is limited by the multiplier. 1.0GHz is running well, charging is taking a while now... Do you also have the Motorola DROID 1 or another phone? There is a 1.25GHz LV one if anyone has tried that.
-
So my stepmom's Froyo Fascinate upgrade didn't go well....I suspect she did something funky by canceling the upgrade in the middle of it installing the first time, then attempting to install it again.
In any case, I've done a hard reset, and am wondering if I should do the "One Click Lag Fix" or not. I've never done it on this phone.
I'm using the 1.25 LV kernel and have been pretty satisfied.
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Noooooooo!!! OCLF is so buggy, I wouldn't use it on my phone, much less put it on someone's phone that has no clue what a file system is (like teh womenz).
If you're looking for stable and fast, install a custom kernel that's compatible with the stock ROM, that includes a CWM compatible backend that can convert the entire thing to EXT4 through interactive recovery.
It sounds complicated, but it's really just a matter of booting into recovery and selecting the EXT4 options. Then on next boot, everything is converted automatically.
The OCLF is converting to EXT2 which doesn't have any kind of journaling and is very easily corrupted with any kind of battery pull or power loss. -
Ahh, gotcha. I saw it was depricated on XDA so I wasn't sure. Glad I checked here.
Phone's been rooted so I'll try what you suggested. So far she's impressed with the overall speed of it stock so we'll see
Thanks Hal! -
Nah i have a Samsung Vibrant lol
Pushing the Droid 1 up to 1Ghz and 1.2Ghz.... thats crazy
watch for smoke
-
Stress testing as we speak now
1.2GHz rebooted, so testing the 1.1GHz - passed first half hour! -
Does anyone know an easy way to edit the bottom ribbon on the android screen?
Been testing a bunch of free software out and just wanted to share what I've the best software for me and why:
SMS program: Go SMS Pro - highly customizable with super fast lite mode.
Productivity: Evernote and Astrid Tasks - like Astrid's home widget
Calendar: Smooth Calendar - like the home widget and integration with Google calendar
Weather: WeatherEye - used to The Weather Network
Barcode reader: Barcode Scanner
Music player: Mixzing - equalizer, folder organization, player during lock, lots of widget choices
Other media program: Shazam - I always forget to look up songs I hear when I get home, this does it so much easier
Alarm clock: Lightning Bug
Market: AppBrain - sort by price/free, rating/relevance
File manager: Astro
Misc: Quick Settings - nice program to quickly turn on/off things like WiFi, BT, data, GPS, etc. instead of all those widgets
Medical programs: Medscape, iTriage, Prognosis (game), Qx Calculator
Recorder: Tape-a-Talk - easy to use
Calculator: RealCalc - like my scientific calculator
Comparison tool: Price Compare - simple and easy to use
Converter: ConvertPad - I like how it has every possible conversion for each unit category all in one shot -
My sister is having nothing but problems with her Captivate.
GPS issues, failed SMS sending with full reception, random reboots etc. Going to see if ATT can swap it out for a different phone (but I doubt they will)
