Except for the Droid 1, Incredible, Eris, and Charge (not sure about the last 2, but I'm pretty confident). Locking the bootloader is more of a Motorola (post Droid 1) thing, rather than a Verizon thing.
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Ok. Anything Moto. Droid was a bit far reaching.
I still think the Charge is probably the best thing on VZW at the moment. I know how much better a custom kernel can make a device and the newer Moto "Droid" devices just won't ever live up to their potential.
Historically though, Verizon has been the one that locks their hardware down. -
THIS THIS THIS. They still cripple some feature phones to this day: You can't send files/photos over bluetooth on the LG Cosmos, for example.
I remember my Treo 700w (which was Verizon exclusive at the time) didn't come with wi-fi....it wasn't until the Treo 700wx (which arrived on Sprint then VZW) that wi-fi was available. Ditto VZW's Centro.
My Omnia i910 had Wi-Fi but they crippled the GPS to only work with VZ Navigator for ages. Then once they offered up an update to unlock the GPS, the GPS sucked.
Ugh verizon...how I loathe you... -

Is is bad that I think I got more excited from that video than I did at any point in the entire Apple keynote today?
-
I think that's worth me pausing DMB for. *watches*
EDIT: swear words....lots and lots of swear words are going through my head...that thin...that curved...with LTE?!
Hahaaha that's epic...I was totally three letter acronyming at my computer screen...c'mon apple? -
Holy crap... I feel like a kid in a candy store with that video...
And its shape... It reminds me of the Xperia Arc, which is my dream shape
Guess I might be selling the GSII...
-
Oh I can't wait, so glad I passed on the Bionic.

My Maxis!?
Malaysian carrier!?!
That looks damn good though, I hope the back is metal... -
Can anyone please recommend me a theme for CM7 that is :
- Blue
- Very glowy
- Has overscroll glow
- Has a glowy Notification bar and its content
I have already searched, and I like Blue Bionic, but I would like one that is more like what I have described. -

LOL. Yea. It's from Twitter.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus full specs revealed; Verizon Wireless exclusive
I think BGR is generally credible, at least from what I can remember.
9mm is stupid thin for a phone with LTE and a dual core plus NFC radio. -
So HAL what is your take on the rumors?
All the rumors are pointing to a Verizon Exclusive release for the Galaxy Nexus in the US. Do you think a ATT compatible phone will at least be available unlocked? I have $700 set aside for it, so don't really care if its offered directly by ATT -
I can only hope it show up in Canada for the major carriers too (aka ATT compatible version).

Samsung Galaxy Nexus (Nexus Prime) Specs Get Detailed [UPDATED]
"[Update] We are hearing conflicting reports in response to BGR‘s latest scoop. AndroidForums member HanSolo points to a Google+ posting by one Lee Johnston that takes issue with the supposedly final spec sheet listed above. According to this Johnston character (whose trustworthiness has not been established), the Galaxy Nexus/Nexus Prime will read more like the recently announced Samsung Galaxy S II HD LTE. This includes a larger 1850mAh battery, 8MP rear camera, and leaves open the possibility for a 1.5GHz dual-core chipset. While it should be noted that these claims lack any credibility on their own, they have seemingly been substantiated by AndroidForums member black_man_x, a reliable source who has reportedly been using the Nexus Prime for the past few weeks.
In other words, take all of this speculation with a grain of salt. The truth will be revealed next week at Samsung’s CTIA event. If you want to dive deeper down the rabbit hole, however, head on over to the discussion thread to catch up on the latest buzz and add your own two cents.
[via BGR]"
I'm still hoping they use a Wolfson audio DAC... -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
It carries multimode support. Similar to the iPhone 4S. It'll be a cold day in hades before anyone releases a CDMA exclusive that's as popular as a Nexus device. The VZW customers are wishfully thinking it'll be an exclusive because there was no GS2 announced. That seems harsh to say, but unless there are MAJOR $$$ involved, this device will be a GSM device just like all the rest.
Yep... and Engadget says it'll be an Exynos device with a PowerVR GPU. I think people are making things up now... not that they haven't been, but now it's getting pretty far out there. I'd like to say it's an OMAP device, just by they people I know and what they're saying, but I kinda want it to be an Exynos device myself.
The Wolfson DAC is something I hope for as well. It has been a pretty good selling point for people looking for a decent sounding mobile device. -
How do I format an SD card for Android? I put it in my Android and it said it didn't recognize the card, although it's FAT32 and reads fine in Windows. When I go to format it in my Android device by clicking on the "format" button it just hangs there for a long time. It's a 16GB card, but seems it would just do a quick format. There's no status or anything of what it's doing to the card. Can I format it in Windows, and if so how?
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
If you have a MicroSD to regular SD adapter, you can just insert it into your reader... go to My Computer, right click on the drive, then hit format. Format as FAT32. Leave the name unspecified.
What device is it going in? -
I did that. It's formatted as FAT32. Works fine in Windows. I put it in an android device and it says "damaged memory device, you may need to reformat it" when it clearly is not damaged. It's going into an el-cheapo $90 anroid 2.2 7" tablet. It's for my niece. Trying to get it set up for her to give to her for her birthday this weekend (she'll be 10).
edit: hmm, just plugged an 8GB in there and it works fine. Maybe it has a limit of 8GB for some reason. I actually was going to give her the 8GB anyhow, just had the 16GB open and available so thought I'd throw it in there.
I plan on using the 16GB in my Galaxy Player 5. I'm sure that can handle it (I hope). -
Oh of course.
I am just hoping it will arrive in Canada in a timely manner. Unlike the other two Nexues........
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
I see. Some of the cheaper tablets and Android devices are picky about their SD cards.
The Galaxy Player 5.0 shouldn't have a problem at all with it though.
Which brings us to a very important question... Is it Nexi or Nexuses or Nexus (like the plural of deer is deer).
-
The 8GB is a SanDisk. The 16GB is an AmazonBasics brand, but seems to get high user marks.
Amazon.com: AmazonBasics 16 GB microSDHC Class 10 Flash Memory Card with SD Adapter: Electronics -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Class 10 is probably why. Class 10 works best in high-end devices, or devices that can actually make use of it's read/write speed. You'll see the same issues with the WP7 devices. Apparently, certain SoC's just don't like working with higher speed cards.
Hummingbird has no issues with class 10 though, or even SDXC.
-
Well that's good to know. Seems it should be able to run slower though if needed, or maybe they don't work that way. At least I know I'll have a zippy card for my Galaxy. And 8GB works great for my nieces Android.

Samsung and Google delay Nexus Prime and Ice Cream Sandwich debut | VentureBeat
What.
How is it not the right time? -
Most people are saying it's out of respect for Mr. Jobs.
-
I've seen that, and I have to say I don't get it. It's possible to show respect for Steve Jobs without disrupting business activities.
-
QFT! Except Toughbook girls like to pat themselves on the back more than the Applets.

Anyone know what to put into a kernel (Samsung, if it's specific) to allow overclocking and change CPU speed steps?
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
/arch/arm/
clock.c
cpu-freq.c
cpu.c
cpuidle.c
dev-cpufreq.c
All of that is in the kernel source.
Of course you'd need to edit those for the platform: S5PV310 or Exynos. S5PV210/110 is Hummingbird. -
There's a competing set of specs been leaked to GSMArena.
They're a reputable enough site, though not as big on leaks and rumours as BGR.
Of the two, I hope that GSMArena's specs turn out to be correct but I suspect that BGR's are closer to the truth. -
Any way to get *gasp* angry birds on an Android tablet that doesn't have Android Market?

I'll PM you.

amazon market?
EDIT: finally Costco got the AT&T Galaxy SII on their site. for a low price of $150! comes with screen protector, case and car charger. woot! getting my first android phone. -

Never doubted that it would come to other carriers, just hoping to see it exclusively at Verizon for a month. Would be interesting to see if there are any differences from the Verizon Samsung DROID Prime over AT&T and T-Mobile's Samsung Nexus Prime. Though being a Google phone, I thought they would have called it the Google Nexus Prime (like its predecessor). Of course this is just a minor technicality...
-
Lads, take it easy. Lets stick to talking about Android phones shall we?
I wish they'd just call it Google Nexus Prime as well. Not the whole:
[Insert carrier name] Samsung Galaxy S2 Droid Prime 4G blah blah blah. -
FCC <3. Size comparison time! Using the info from the URL, and the rumored 9mm thickness from BGR, I threw this together:
Sized Up: Nexus Prime vs iPhone 4 vs Droid Bionic vs Nexus S vs Droid 1 -
Kinda like my " Sprint Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch"?
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Exactly. There's like 14 adjectives too many...
Whatever happened to the simple days when it was just Captivate, Mesmerize, Vibrant... those were simple and nice.
-
I....I...I have a confession....
I spent some time with a Droid Bionic today.
Conclusion: The PenTile screen hoopla is just that. Hoopla. I only noticed it when I was straining really REALLY hard to find it. Beyond that, it's a sharp, clear, colorful screen IMO....not Super AMOLED brilliant I'm sure, but good.
MAP is smooth as butter, I like it. A lot. Favorite part: The contacts widget that "ripples and expands" when you pull down is just plain cool to use.
You're probably thinking. BooBoo? A touchscreen phone? If so, why would he consider a locked down Motorola?
I'm strongly considering the Droid 3. Even though I have enough to buy a Nexus, I just feel like I'd be miserable using it. If I'm not happy, no amount of high end specs will change that.
I'm hoping Motorola will proceed with the decryptable (for lack of a better term) bootloader updates. They already did the Atrix...I can only hope that they'll get to the other devices.
Thoughts? Or should I hold out for the Stratosphere even if it's old. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
This is a story in pictures of what happens if you buy the D3 instead of waiting for the new Nexus...

I'm rolling in stitches laughing right now haha. +1 rep to you sir.
edit: could someone give him some for me, ive given him too much it seems hah
I know Nexus....but unless the keyboard is trans parent, or a magical curved slide-out appears it wont solve my main gripe. That, and auto correct is a mixed blessing, and swiftkey is horrible. ditto swype. -
Megacharge Custom User Title
I don't know about you guys, but I'm really looking forward to the Galaxy Note. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
LOL. Ditto with Swype. I've grown really fond of the stock Gingerbread keyboard though... I can really fly on it. I tried Swiftkey X but I couldn't get used to its way of doing business. Swype required too much thought... lol.
Same here. For me it's going to be the Note or the G-Tab 7.7. The Note is looking like what it's going to be though. -
Same here. Having a hard time trying to decide between the new nexus or waiting for the note. :/
-
I'm torn, the huge battery is definitely a plus but I wonder if the screen is too large, also it's a tad disappointing it's just S-AMOLED whereas the Tab 7.7 is S-AMOLED+.
The stylus is a nice touch but I just don't know how often I'd use it.
The Nexus on the other hand seems like it will be that wee bit more practical in size, though the battery could be relatively disappointing in size.
Plus, whilst I promised myself I'd buy a handset with an HD screen before the end of this year, now we're getting down to it I'm not sure I want to - I'm probably going to get given one by SE in the near-ish future anyway.
Then again, hopefully Samsung will make some (Note or Nexus) available through their retail training site, in which case I reckon I've got a decent chance of winning one. -
Meh, I love Swype. If it weren't for that, I'd still be using my Intercept because of the physical keyboard. Without Swype, I totally wouldn't have been ready for a pure touchscreen phone.
-
Pantech Vega LTE gets official for South Korea, dual-core 1.5GHz CPU and 4.5-inch HD display - Engadget
You have to admit, whatever you think of Pantech as a brand, that's one heck of a phone. -
Swype is the boss at one handed typing, nothing beats it
Otherwise i find a multitouch keyboard much better & faster. I use Thumb Keyboard, its themeable and for my huge phone it splits the horizontal keyboard tablet style, which helps for my phone
otherwise its just as good as any other multitouch keyboard out there
