The thing is that many who buy the Apple thing for the apparent prestige (excuse me while I get back up after ROFL) will then cheap out on everything else like the dumb marketing-led types they are. So if Apple sells a charger for $30, and you can buy another one for $5, since no-one will see the charger you buy the cheap one.

I buy all OEM Apple accessories except for the case as Apple doesn't have anything like an Otterbox, though I am replacing mine.

God those app icons look shabby and childish!
Even more in high resolution. -
It is really weird. Even after using it for a while and getting the feel of it it's not, on the face of it, really any different to Windows Phone or 8.1 in terms of the flatness and probably the general shapes adopted for icons, in fact you could argue on detail points that Windows Phone is a bit more mundane looking even...
... but it still manages to look even more like something for 2 year olds than iOS 6 did and really exposes who it's really for. And in terms of it's general acceptance it really is a spectacular case of 'the emperor's new clothes'. -
I've always thought of Apple to be arrogant, yet innovative. Why... oh, why did they choose to drink the Metro UI Kool-aid?!?!
-
Depends on what you call innovative I guess. For me their innovation is inextricably tied to 'better marketing'.

It's only "innovative" to tech noobs, hipsters, and old folks.
The only thing I ever respected Apple for was Steve Jobs' marketing prowess. -
I guess I'm in the minority but I still think iOS 7 blows away 6 in terms of visuals and looks good in its own right. You do need the right wallpaper but once that is set, it comes into it's own.

I definitely love the aesthetic design of iOS 7, and I'm not two years old.

I haven't been paying much attention to NBR so I missed this bit of snark, but I'm certainly no Applezombie. Every smartphone I've owned, from my BB Curve to my Moto Droid to my Galaxy Nexus has seen a performance hit over time.
-
I agree. I find it interesting that looks seem to be one of the main criticisms against Apple I've hearing lately: iOS 7 looks "kiddish", the gold iPhone is for "Kardashians"...the criticisms just keep losing substance...

Who knows you may be right, but not everyone realises they are. Choice of Apple products - or rather, the view their stuff is better - are often made on the basis of ego trumping capability / knowledge.
I don't understand this, really I don't - people piling in to defend something they don't or didn't even own. At least if you owned it, you could be excused for being a typically 'I spent all I could on it' defensive type, but I was making reference to a very specific case where it was absolutely apparent they'd slowed it down to drive sales. And it worked. When people (and Apple) didn't care anymore, on their last update for the 3G they forgot to slow it down. They no longer make that mistake. -
I must stop this before it spreads any further... -

I have been solely UNIMPRESSED with my iPad Air.
My 4th Gen shows it up in almost every way, except CPU performance and weight... and CPU performance isn't even noticeable as far as I can tell. Weight, well yea that's a hurrdurr, but still. The speaker, in particular, on the 4th Gen is noticeably louder. -

I found your first problem, you bought the wrong iPad.
iPad mini with Retina display - Apple Store (U.S.) -
My main criticism against Apple is the limited selection they offer. No large phones, no cheap tablets, etc. But so long as you're shopping in a market where they have an offering, I think their products are very solid. I find the "kiddie" and "Kardashian" insults aimed at their stuff pretty juvenile. If you (rhetorical "you") don't like the look of the software or hardware, don't buy it, but screaming about it online or insulting other people who do like it is just absurd. Aesthetics are subjective.booboo12 likes this.

I mean I kinda find that untrue yet true at the same time. Apple responded to a wave of customers because the iPad mini came out, becoming the cheapest iPad to be released, and also a smaller profile. Also look at the colored iPhone 5C. Now you are right, they don't really offer as much as Android does, but it also doesn't have the "issues" Android has, aka not everyone having the same experience, bloated images, the list goes on and on. I was wary of iOS7, but I figured I'd update my 5 to iOS7 because Apple doesn't release crappy stuff as they had learned from previous generations of iOS. -
Me??? NEVER!
-
What did you expect? Seriously.
No, the criticisms are entirely accurate, but the level of acceptance among the entrenched fans (or those just susceptible to ego-stroking marketing) has gotten more automatic and natural. Some apps have taken flat design to more Windows Phone levels or successfully melded old-school with Windows Phone, but the OS itself remains more visually reminiscent of toddlers. -
If u are judging people solely by what kind/color their phone is then u have much bigger personal issues that Siri can't even help with.

Ok, iPad user here with an android phone !
I do have a question. In android, you can access the file system and attach files to your email, so is there an option for that in iPad? it is really annoying that to do anything 'real' like attaching documents, I have to get another device (be the phone or fire up my laptop) which should not be the case.
Are there any easy workarounds / apps w/o jailbreaking the device where I can just click through the email app and attach a file? I like how the email app in iOS (much better than how android does it IMO) in how it unifies all the accounts in one place. -
^
Best bet? Use a cloud service or iCloud.
You can absolutely judge people by every choice they make - especially the more minor, completely voluntary choices. -
And you can make all kinds of assumptions about why someone may have chosen something like that and they can all be dead wrong.
-
How does that help me in attaching documents?
-
Well, whatever you're trying to attach should allow either Mail or a third party app to attach it to an email and the easiest way to hold that info to attach would be a cloud service that the apps are compatible with. Arbitrary files might be a problem. You could, I'm sure, JB the device and then there will be other options - but stock you're pretty limited either way.
-
I judge because I am all knowing...
And I also don't want a precedent set.
If Apple offers the iPhone in pseudo-gold this time for the same price and the black and white ones, what's to stop Apple from charging more for the gold colored iPhone 6? Admit it, you would all pay more the gold iPhone 6 just because it's gold colored, even though it's the same exact spec phone as the black or white one.
-
Sony has had limited-edition special-colored laptops for years. Car companies have been doing it for decades. Clothing companies have been doing it for centuries. WHO CARES. If you don't want them...don't buy them. Some people are willing to pay extra for a gold Vaio Z. Some people are willing to pay extra for a multicolored Moto X. Some people are willing to pay extra for brightly-colored NikeID shoes. Some people are willing to pay extra to play games at 1080p instead of 720p. Some people are willing to pay extra for a winter coat that "pops" instead of just something that keeps them warm. Unless it's your money at stake, it's not your concern. These are all equally harmless.
-
Don't forget, Nextel also did it with their sh%^ phones (see Nextel Ferrari Edition). And yes, it does bother me more than it should.
I consider cars and clothes in a different standard as tech.
My problem comes when a manufacturer charges more for one version of a product cause they "paint it Gold" so to speak. Didn't cost them any more to have the Vaio (or whatever) engineered or produced in a gold color, and the specs are the same. But "it's gold colored, so it's premium, and we can charge more". -
That is what I would refer to as "totally arbitrary" or "a distinction without a difference"
PCs sit in the middle of your room just like furniture do; laptops and smartphones are carried with you visibly just like wristwatches or eyeglasses are. I pay more for cool-looking eyeglasses that don't help me see any better than cheaper eyeglasses. Smartphone fashion is no different than eyeglasses fashion. -
it doesn't. he's just an old fart that enjoys being a sour puss.
have u tried that Pages app? i believe it's free too. the only thing i relegate my iPad to is games, various apps, and surfing the web. i don't waste my time trying to do anything that's actually product on my iDevices.
@radji: pass me what u're smoking, broham. last time i checked, the gold iPhones were the same price? last time i checked was 12/3 because i bought another one.
-
Well sure, that might bug me a bit too. As it is, Apple isn't doing that and I hope they don't. I wouldn't want to pay more for it, but I will admit that I do like the gold color better, and if I had to pay more for it, then I might. But I would be disappointed in them
-
20 iPads owned and he hasn't figured out how to use them? Yup, that sound like our Vogelbung.
...You're not helping.
I rephrase: Cars and clothing have the lowest standards IMO because you pay far more than you should just to get far less.
Autos especially. The whole machine is not equal to the sum total of it's parts (the same could be said for all goods, but autos more than any other). Making profits is one thing. But intentionally gouging and extorting thru bold faced lies...tis why I yell at people to think something thru before they buy it.
I don't smoke it, I snort it. Anti-depressants work so much better when they go up the nariz.
Right now the pseudo-gold iPhones are the same price. But just wait...
Now that all of you are drinking the kool-aid, the gold iPhone 6 will cost more than the others for no reason other than it's Gold colored. And you will all pay the extra without thinking twice!
Just you wait!!!!!!

I haven't had experience with third party kits but just remember when you don't go to Apple for anything inside your phone, you're voiding the warranty on it.

Any suggestions on iPad Air vs Retina iPad mini? I mainly want it for use in bed/class, as my iPhone strains my eyes when I'm on it for extended periods of time. I know the iPad Air is nowvery close to weight with the mini but the form factor remains (is the size annoying to use in bed)
-
What are you even talking about?
I do own an iPhone 5s. I did not buy it for any reasons that fit your preconceived description of an iPhone owner. I have also owned numerous other smartphones that have all experienced a performance hit over time. Your conspiracy theories are adorable, though.Mitlov likes this. -

I was mulling over the same question since I use a mix of different-gen iPads and the 1st-gen Minis, and my use requires that the device be handy - they're essentially remotes for my home automation, and control the lights, TV, etc, I don't really use'em for anything else but the fact that I can just walk around aimlessly with it and not notice it much is important. I ended up choosing to go with the Retina Mini over the Air to replace all of my iPads after trying one of each.
Class? For actual academic use? Not sure. Are you in third grade to need an iPad? If so I guess smaller hands are better off with a Retina Mini, though eyestrain could still be an issue if you stare at it all day.
I didn't dispute that in my post. Which is also the reason why your reaction is predictable. -
I'm disagreeing with you because you're wrong, not because I'm some sort of silly fanboy.
If you wanna talk about predictable, I could cobble together a Vogelbung post generator. "Blah blah apple sucks even though I own many apple products and put them all in $5000 bags because I am an ostentatious dink and condescend to everyone." I mean, really. -
i had a choice between the iPad Mini and the Air. i picked the Air because of it's bigger screen. aren't the Airs supposed to be a little faster too? correct me if i'm wrong.
if u are wiping your butt with $20 bills like Vogelpuss and just use your tablets for remote controls then stick with the Mini because of it's smaller/lighter form factor. the Air is much lighter and smaller than it's predecessors. i feel it's more fit to handle your general tasks around the house or school.
i'm also not really into products that have a "mini" variation. i feel like it's a dumbed down version made for women and girly men.
-
I'd go for the iPad Air over the iPad Mini. Even with high resolution, I have some difficulty reading desktop webpages on a 7" screen without copious amounts of zooming and panning. Also, the selection of accessories for the Air is going to be better; it's easier to craft a pleasant-to-use keyboard folio for a 10" tablet than a 7".
-

I'd get the Retina Mini, you get 95% the stuff in the Air as you do in the Mini in a smaller form factor.
