I have been using an AV for years, I had LG phone on Android 2 and i used an AV on it.
I have been using Avast free on my phones/tablets and i have not see any problems with battery drain, though i all these years i have yet to find a virus, though Avast constantly warns me when i am doing a an side installation of an app and you have to enable any installation option in the settings, Avast warns you to disable this as this leaves your device open to threats.
Rooting your device is not encouraged, though Avast firewall only works if you are rooted.
I use the Gsam battery monitor, but the latest update broke the alarms on my Samsung Tab S1 so i contacted the developer, he sent my a new build which worked great, but as soon as i enabled my wifi the Gsam app was blocked (licence verification failed), great ehh, so i used Avast firewall to block the app from doing a licence verification, and now it works fine, I have a full licence so i dont know why this has happened.
Anyway that`s my story, what is yours???
John.

I don't usually... never had an issue... I've got Lookout on there right now since I'm doing some kernel testing and I needed a full stock T-Mobile ROM to test the latest kernel base vs the test kernel and I might actually keep it, if only for the massive antitheft features and the fact I get it free for having T-Mobile's insurance.
-
All i can say is why ?
I just kinda stay away from apps that look shady. But thats just me.
Havent used a phone at stock, all my iPhone's were Jailbroken and same for my Android devices. -

never used an AV on any phone. Just don't download cracked or shady apps an you'll be fine. I find any security solution on a phone is overkill and just kills the performance.
-
I do not need one but periodically download and use it. I varies which one I download.
-
I don't use an AV on my android phone.
-
AV on phones doesn't really impact performance at all. It scans when an app is installed or updated and that's it unless you do a manual scan.tribaljet and Spartan@HIDevolution like this.

As the saying says, I would rather have one and not need it, than need one and not have one, or something like that.
Each to his/her own.

I've never used an AV on my phones, and no longer use an AV on my computers either. Haven't had an issue in years.
Security starts with the end user.
Don't visit shady sites.
Don't click on shady links in shady emails.
Don't download shady programs.
Assume your friends/family/contacts are idiots/morons and are forwarding you shady stuff (i.e don't open it). -
Absolutely not. And I have felt a performance difference running a AV in the background when I have done so.
I do run one on my parent's fire tablet because parents.
But with the security features that Android already has and common sense you'll be ok. -
Do not use FREE or noname Antivirus software on phones -> especially with lock functions.
If you want good software for this I recommend Eset Nod32 Antivirus which is cheap and will provide safety without damn troubles. I suffered much because of bad/low quality AV software... and it was better without them at all. -
There's a big difference between some no name company and Lookout, Avast, etc. Just like on desktop, there is no need to pay for basic antivirus.

I have LG g3 that has McAfee mobile security thing pre-installed.
Never detected anything in its life. Just scans app updates and says no harm found
I didn't uninstall because it takes pictures of someone who tried to unlock my phone and failed and sends it thru email -
I ended up uninstalling Avast. Between Knox, Android Device Manager and Marshmallow Permissions, I feel that my phone is secure enough. But, I suppose that an Antivirus might not hurt especially if you're installing apps from outside the Play Store
-
Kind of a moot point, apps typically don't have root access to the device, this includes antivirus programs.
-
I don't ever use anti-virus. Just be sensible and you'll be safe (not safe from exploits or android bugs, but meh). They slow down systems way too much. I don't even have windows defender enabled on my laptop. I absolutely hate it when the system starts scanning every time I got to bed, or when I browse/copy files. I have multiple hard drives so it gets really bad.
And when I'm about to do something really stupid, I always backup my devices just in case I mess up. -

In the free Avast if you are rooted, you can turn on the firewall and add apps to stop them downloading/uploading your personal information, this even stops some adverts from showing.

I have never used antivirus in Android, only the security suite included in Samsung Phones and an Ad blocker.
-
No, not ever
I even dont know that i installed AVG on my old Sony phone. rarely use it. I think you just need stay away from blocked websites, installed av for your PC. That's enough. -
No, AV on android is just a money maker.
-
Paying for AV on mobilephones is like paying someone to glue some extra layers of whatever on your door and tell you that everything is alright and you are safe.
The same problems and backdoors issues are still there, only way to fix them would be to root your phone and let the AV do its job, but by doing that you are even more exposed and who would wan't to trust another AV with all your phone data.. -
AVG is ok but I do notice it bogs the phone down.
-
I use Avira free, not sure if it is placebo, but I keep it...

I have been using Avast on my android`s for years, but i am really getting sick of all the stupid popup`s for add-on`s to clean my memory or make my battery charge faster or last longer these are free but i don't want all this crap, stop virus and malware is all i want.
I dont mind the pop-up`s asking me to buy the upgrade from free to pro version it`s what you have to put up with when using the free version.

Agreed. Avast seems pretty solid and that's what I used when Android was my primary mobile OS, but TrustGo is also pretty legit imo. TrustGo also has a built in Data Backup feature you can take advantage of, so if you ever come down to flashing a new ROM and/or wiping the phone completely, you can restore your backup (as long as you remember your sign-in information).

I am very wary of apps i have not used before, I use to use UC Browser, and it has now been exposed as one of the worst apps for sending all your search history and all your phone detail, photo`s contacts ect, to some place in China
