I'd love it if people here would do a huge favor for me. Go to Google Play and see if Apple Music is compatible to download to your device, and then post the result here (make and model of phone/tablet and the result). You don't have to actually download it or sign up for the service; it will say right where the "download" button is if your device is not currently supported. My S7 Edge is but my Nexus 9 is not, and I want to see how many or how few devices are compatible with the app. I'm only asking about official compatibility (can you download from Google Play), not actual compatibility (will it function properly if sideloaded...it does on the Nexus 9).
I'm not sure if Apple Music's compatibility is basically just limited to Samsung flagship phones, or if it's widely compatible with Snapdragon-equipped devices, or if it's compatible with phones but not tablets...basically what the boundaries of its compatibility are.
Here's the link to Google Play's listing of Apple Music: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apple.android.music&hl=en
Basically all I'm looking for in responses is something like this:
Galaxy S7 Edge: yes
Nexus 9: no
-
My "current" android devices look like this:
HTC One X: yes
Tab S 10.5: no
Definitely not limited to current flagship phones.Mitlov likes this. -
Thanks!
...can anyone else weigh in? I'd give out cookies if I could. I really prefer Apple Music to other music services, but I prefer Android to iOS, so I want to see how broad of a selection of devices it'll work with. -
Xiaomi Mi 5 (S820): yes
Samsung GS4 (E5410): yes
I'm guessing it's the Tegra K1 that's the culprit. I wonder if MediaTek or HiSilicon devices have similar issues, but I doubt it. Such phones are way more popular than Tegra consoles and tablets.Mitlov likes this. -
Thanks!
The fact that a Xiaomi phone is listed as compatible suggests to me that the default answer is "yes unless we blacklist the device, not "no unless we whitelist the device." I can't imagine Xiaomi is a high-priority in Cupertino.
Yeah, I'm not sure if the issue with the Nexus 9 is Tegra K1, or tablet form factor, or both. The fact that the Galaxy Tab S 10.5 is listed as incompatible makes me think they may be blacklisting tablet form factors.
But I also remember someone once saying that the Nexus 6P was listed as incompatible with Apple Music (though that was a while ago when the app was still listed as a beta). If that's still the case nowadays, there might be a third variable floating out there. -
Starlight5 Yes, I'm a cat. What else is there to say, really?
@Mitlov tried with generic generated device ID (reports itself as Samsung SM-G900F) - Apple Music is listed as incompatible. Did you try downloading & installing APK, without playstore?

It works just fine on my Nexus 9 if I sideload the APK. Doesn't even struggle with the screen size; it works just fine in a tablet format. And in practice, there are no performance issues with the Tegra SoC. Problem is, I download a ton of proprietary downloads (subscription-based music downloads) with the app, and if I can't do app updates through the Play Store, I think these music downloads get wiped out each time I sideload an updated version of the app.

Custom ROM , Touchwiz 5.1.1
Yep it does.Mitlov likes this. -
Hey, it is hard to play Apple Music directly on Android as well as Android Tablet. Maybe you need some tool like TuneFab Apple Music Converter for playing Apple Music on Android as well as Android Tablet.

Google Pixel 2 XL: yes.
But the Apple Music Android app is so consistently buggy that I've given up on the service and gone back to Google Play Music.saturnotaku and Vasudev like this. -
Did I read/hear right that Google is giving up on play music as well? something about moving to YouTube.
-
That's what I've heard, but I thought it was more of a rebranding than anything else. YouTube Music and Google Play Music already share song "likes" and a subscription account with each other.
Google: why have one app for a task when you can have three? (See also: messaging) -
Ok, So you still get "apple music" like distribution?
-
I don't know yet because they haven't unveiled the full new product yet. If you can't play albums, and it's just about singles and videos, I'll either go to Spotify or I'll give Apple Music another try.

Apple music is my favorite for sure. Works on everything I have installed it on.
