For anyone who missed it, the Note 8 is basically an S8 Plus with:
(1) an S-Pen;
(2) a dual-camera rear setup (standard camera and telephoto camera, both with OIS);
(3) a slightly more square shape with less curved screen edges.
Anyone love it? Hate it? Thoughts?
I'm a little tempted, because as a former Note 7 owner, Samsung has offered me $425 to trade in my S7 Edge for one (and when I returned the Note 7, they had given me a full refund plus $100, so I effectively paid $650 for the S7 Edge a year ago). And that dual-camera setup sounds tempting.

I like it. I'm going to wait for the iPhone 8 Plus and Pixel 2 XL to be announced before making a decision, though.

Seems awesome, not going to get one no matter what though. Screw Samsung and their trashy locked bootloaders.

I'll likely get an Exynos version. I'm not touching a Snapdragon version.
-
I want to like the Pixel 2 XL, but (1) no headphone jack, and (2) I'm a little scared of boot loops on an LG-made phone after the Nexus 5X, G4, and V10 fiascos.

I would go for it if I was wanting a Samsung phone. I had a note before and it was good.
-
Without bootloader unlocked and rootable, I would pass.
-
I'm waiting to see how the Pixel 2 XL and V30 are.

Too big for me, the Galaxy S8 is the largest size for a phone that I'd like to own.

I had a Note 7, went back to using my Note 5. I am entirely too attached to my pen to use anything else.
I preordered the Note 8 using the $425 trade-in. Picked up an iPhone 5 on Craigslist for $75 I will send in because I want to keep the Note 5 just in case. Ebates is also running another promotion that took another $90 off the price. I'll probably sell the freebies after receiving them too.
All in all, I'm super excited. Paying a lot less for this new phone than I expected to. -
Good deal alaskajoel. I hope to get a fair trade in for my iPhone 6s when the new ip8 comes out too. Telus gives a fair deal and you don't to mess around trying to sell it then. Just trade it in and go!

How the Galaxy Note 8 will keep you from getting burned
After the Note 7 fires in 2016, Samsung needs its new phones to be all about safety. It all starts with the batteries.
https://www.cnet.com/news/is-the-galaxy-note-8-battery-safe/ -
Have you actally confirmed that you'll get the $425 credit for an iPhone 5? My email said "up to $425," so I figured you'd only get the full $425 if you were trading in an S7 or iPhone 7 that had been purchased new when the Note 7 was recalled.hmscott likes this.
-
I asked customer service that specific question before ordering. They said any of those devices will earn the full $425. When checking out they gave the $425 discount and I just had to select the category of phone I would be sending back (in my case it was the list of iPhones)
I'm still super skeptical, but their order terms say they will make a second credit card charge if the device doesn't meet their trade-in criteria. If they try to pull the "up to $425" line after receiving my old iPhone, you better believe I will charge it back with my credit card and submit the customer service interaction as evidence. -
Well if you pull it off, more power to you, but you're definitely gaming the system by getting $425 for a phone you paid $75 for. It's a real windfall to you compared to your typical Note 7 owner (like me) who replaced it with an S7 Edge or iPhone 7 and is getting a $425 trade-in for a phone that originally cost $750.
I wonder why they say "up to $425" if literally every eligible phone will be worth exactly $425. If it's as simple as you say, why include the "up to" language at all?hmscott likes this. -
Don't get me wrong, I completely agree with you that it doesn't make a lot of sense.The up to language is really ambiguous in some of their own materials.
There is a big thread on XDA about this too. I didn't just happen to get a crazy CS rep...lots of people are hearing the same thing right from Samsung representatives The "up to $425" is only regarding condition, not the device from what many of us have been told.
Like I said, I'm going with it and have evidence to back it up. There will be dozens of upset people if Samsung tries to back pedal and I trust my AMEX to back me up if it comes to that.

Is Galaxy Note 8 really worth to purchase?
-
If the stylus is a killer feature for you, yes.
If not, then no. The Galaxy S8+ has nearly identical specs, a bigger battery, and has a street price $200-$300 less.hmscott likes this. -
It looks very good, but on the other hand, concerns about boot-looping (from tech enthusiasts) and lack of name recognition (from the mass market) are going to make it hard for LG to unseat the Galaxy S8 in terms of sales numbers.Primes likes this.
-
With the recent history of Samsung taken into account, it's a good time for LG to make an effort to push their brand into higher volume sales.Primes likes this.

Don't get me wrong. I want the V30 to be a huge sales success. I just don't think it actually will be.

Watch this video till the end guys, very honest review... you probably won't even think about buying the Note 8 after seeing this:
Vasudev, Donald@Paladin44 and hmscott like this. -
As a Note fan there isn't really anything he said that would sway me away from the Note to the S8+.
Going from an S7 Edge I wouldn't upgrade to the S8+, but I would upgrade to the Note 8.Vasudev, Mitlov, Donald@Paladin44 and 1 other person like this. -
Samsung's Galaxy Note 8 has broken presale records despite last year's disaster
https://www.theverge.com/2017/9/8/16277652/samsung-galaxy-note-8-presale-record
"The Note brand is still going strong despite Samsung recalling and discontinuing Note 7 devices last year for battery explosions. The company announced that more customers in the US have preordered the Note 8 than any other Notes it has ever sold in previous years during the same time period.
At a conference in Korea where Samsung announced the Note 8’s release in its home country, Samsung’s mobile chief DJ Koh said it received 650,000 preorders within five days across the 40 countries it first launched in — 2.5 times faster than the Note 7. Samsung has not publicly announced the number for US-only presales."
"Note 8 preorders went live in the US on August 24th and the device is one of Samsung’s most expensive smartphones to date, starting at $930. It’s unapologetically pricey, though Samsung did attempt to offset that price tag with some presale offers.
Preorders before September 24th are eligible for a choice of a Gear 360 camera or a wireless charging bundle, and Note 7 owners were offered a steep discount if they traded in their current device for the Note 8. Carriers like T-Mobile have also offered their own deals, enticing customers to sign up for a new line and to get a full rebate on a second Note 8.
Judging by how popular Note 7s were last year before everything went down, it seems that little has deterred Note fans from upgrading — not even the price tag. Samsung also did not comment on how Note 8 preorders compared to its Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus launches from earlier this year.
Update September 12th 9:40AM ET: This article has been updated with exact preorder number publicly shared by Samsung."Vasudev likes this. -

Don't buy the U (US Snapdragon version) then. Just buy the SM-N950F. Fully able to root/TWRP/ROM.
Absolutely. I ordered the South Korean 6GB/256GB version. All that UFS 2.1 goodness.
In audio, yes. Display? Not a chance. Depends on which you're going for. The V30 is a massive step up for LG, but it's not on the same quality level as the newer Samsung devices. Personally, the only way I'll ever touch another LG device is if I purchase it THROUGH Google as a Pixel phone with Google support. Having to threaten a company with legal action to get them to replace a V10 and 2 G4's is not something I will be doing again, because they can't own their problems. I would have a completely different view of LG had they just owned up to the fact that their devices were defective and just replaced them.
I see quite a few people comparing the Note 8 to other phones. The Note line has no comparison. If you're considering a Note 8, there's a reason... the S-Pen. There's literally nothing else like it in the mobile industry.
Thats exactly what I'm doing. S7 Edge --> Note 8. -
