Wonder if the Surface phone will be enough to make me switch from Samsung? I do love the Pro 2.hmscott and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -
Problem is, I really liked the Note 7. But I had to turn in my Note 7 because of 'exploda-phone' issues. Now I'm stuck in a two year contract with my current phone and can't get another phone until Oct 2018. I would have loved the S8 or Note 8, well preferably Note 8.hmscott and Spartan@HIDevolution like this.

can you not sell your phone and get the S8 when it's out?

The S8 looks nice. I'm just not a real big fan of the 'edge' feature.

Passing up Samsung for the near term. Looking to see what the highest tier Surface phone is like. i agree that the curved display is not appealing

Also not a fan of the non plus version having a 5.5 inch screen. The S7 has a 5.1 inch screen so it fits perfectly on my BMW M4's phone cradle under the arm rest. If I'm gonna buy a bigger phone cradle from BMW it will cost me 500 USDhmscott likes this. -

I know they are playing it safe and for good reason. But they could add a couple mm thickness and increase battery capacity. Besides specs, I don't know any user would be able to feel the difference.hmscott and Spartan@HIDevolution like this.

indeed! give me a thick phone and a bigger battery and I'm a happy bunny! I don't know who came up with this stupid thought that thinner phones are better. it's a phone to be used for God's sakehmscott likes this. -
I know. And most people smack a case on it twice as thick as the phone anyhow... I'm fine with smartly optimized design for size, but that doesn't mean make it as small as possible by compromising other things. But who are we, but victims, er, consumers that don't have a lot of say in the matter.hmscott and Spartan@HIDevolution like this.

The S8 looks nice, and if the right deal comes along I could upgrade - I have the 12 month plan to upgrade, but will likely wait for the Note 8

I'm neutral on it. I got the S7 Edge and while the edge features haven't really been useful, they (and the form factor itself) have not hindered anything and it looks pretty cool too.Convel likes this. -

I had an S7 edge then sold it within a week and got an S7. I didn't ever feel like using the edge features. seems like a gimmick to me. That, and I prefer the smaller size of the S7hmscott likes this. -
not sure about the sizes there. 5.5 seems to be the optimal screensize and the max for one handed use
Spartan@HIDevolution likes this. -
I lived daily with the Sony 6.4" Z Ultra for years and didn't have any usage issues; I only wish that category had caught on with top end components - for some reason all the phones afterwards of that size didn't have flagship CPU / GPU components.
5.5" seems small to me on my S7 Edge, it's usable of course, it's just not as wide and tall as my Z Ultra, so it seems "less".
Performance of the S7 Edge is definitely better, but I do miss the larger size of the 6.4" Sony.Last edited: Feb 12, 2017Spartan@HIDevolution likes this. -

The return of the Galaxy Note 7?

Yeah, it's kinda weird that the "new and improved" Note 7 rumored in that video to be releasing in June *after* the S8 and S8 Plus in March. Why wait.
And, I assume the new Note 8 should drop somewhere around July-November, which carries the hardware performance well past the S8 / S8 Plus and way past the Note 7, why not wait for the Note 8?
Samsung is really gonna need to low ball the selling price of the Note 7 return to market.
It's gonna be like throwing good money after bad... -

I guess if they can use even a low priced unit to offset some of the costs, any little bit helps.hmscott likes this. -
As beautiful as this phone looks. I just can't get over the fact that I have been burned by slow, buggy software on the Note 4 and S7 edge when I had them. So many microstutters and sluggishness made me get rid of both within months. However, my Pixel XL has been absolutely flawless and speedy. I just wish the bezels were smaller.
I do love the bezels on this the S8 by far! If they can nail the software now that Nougat has proven itself to be a killer and speedy OS, I'll consider what Samsung will offer.

Just got the Nougat S7 Edge Update, runs smoothly, so I expect will the S8 and Note 7.5
-
But those update times are SO bad! Have you tried a Pixel XL before to compare the performance of the two?

What Update times?
Do you mean the delay from Google release to ATT release? I don't have a problem waiting - it's not the EotW to me.
It's my every day phone, stability, function, and battery life are the top measures for me. I don't root my carry phone, but I do tune it for battery life.
With the Pixel I could have been using Nougat months earlier, but that wasn't important to me. I'm not doing Android development, or supporting it, so it's a secondary concern.
Glad you enjoy your Pixel XL
-
I just like the timely updates and having the latest features that Google release when it's fresh. I don't root anymore either. I haven't done that in ages and don't care to do so now honestly.
And yeah! It's a lovely phone, and I can't wait for what the Pixel 2 brings to the table! Like I said before if the S8 brings enough features and runs Nougat like a champ, I'm in!hmscott likes this. -
ATT did monthly security updates, which included google updates and fixes. ATT skipped that update the month before this update, but had been doing them regularly for many months before this.
Google has leaned heavily on providers like ATT to get updates out monthly, and I was happy to see it happen.
I assumed ATT was getting ready to drop Nougat - putting their time into that update package, and was pleasantly surprised to get the update notice that it was a 1.5GB update this time
Now I'm waiting for the tablet update to drop... -
I think it will be a toss-up between the S8+ and Pixel 2 XL for me this year. Hardware wise, the Mali-G71 MP20 configuration of the international S8 has me intrigued, and I'm curious to see if they will put it to good use in VR or through a docking solution. Samsung continues to make the best phone displays, and I'm glad they've made their screens less curved since the S6 Edge. The curvature now makes more sense since they're pushing for a high screen-to-body ratio, just like Sharp (Xiaomi Mi Mix, Ulefone F1), LG with their G6, and possibly Apple. I'm sure the camera will be exciting this year as well.
Google probably has something interesting in store for us as well, with this year's Pixels, but ultimately the fall release time frame isn't the best for a company that uses off-the-self SoCs. I also have a hard time seeing them tag along in the minimal bezel race, as they're more about software than hardware. Where they probably will have a leg up is materials used, subjectively speaking. I'm still not a huge fan of slippery phones and thus prefer something other than a glass-metal sandwich, antenna bands or not. If rumours pan out, they'll probably also have Samsung beat with larger battery capacities.
Software wise, I get the feeling I'd regret sticking with Samsung, being a purist of heart. The notion of always having the latest Android iteration with the Pixels is reassuring, especially when it arrives without non-vital features being broken, which early adopter ROMs tend to have, and camera degradation compared to stock. Maybe I'd feel more confident about modern Samsung software if I'd tried Good Lock.
Samsung could impress when it comes to accessories. While the official Daydream VR is casual rather than fiddly, it does have its limiations, perhaps most notably light bleed. The next-gen Gear VR, when backed by a non-throttling powerhouse of a phone running Nougat, could easily take things to the next level. There's also been talks of a dock, which doesn't seem that far-fetched when Microsoft has Continuum.hmscott likes this. -

Samsung Galaxy S8 event: start time, live blog, and where to stream
by Chaim Gartenberg @cgartenberg
Mar 29, 2017, 7:00am EDT
http://www.theverge.com/2017/3/29/1...nouncement-live-stream-time-date-launch-event
"The Galaxy S8 is poised to be one of the biggest phones of 2017, and today Samsung will be giving us our first look at what its vision for the future of smartphones will be. (Or rather, our first official look, at any rate, given the plethora of leaks that have come out about the new phones.
The S8 — which is expected to come in two sizes, the 5.7-inch S8 and the 6.2-inch S8 Plus, — will offer a radical new design for the flagship line of smartphones by minimizing the bezels around the display for a seamless look. As part of that change, Samsung is killing the capacitive buttons that have long graced the front of the device, switching those functions over to software controls and moving the fingerprint sensor of the back of the phone.
The Galaxy S8 will be Samsung's biggest test ever[/paste:font]
Samsung is also expected to premiere its new Bixby virtual assistant with the S8. Today’s event should finally let us see Bixby and action, and give us a better idea of how it differs from Cortana, Siri, Alexa, or Google’s Assistant software.
And while the S8 will probably be the star of the show, there might be a few new accessories to go along with it, including a rumored DeX dock to turn your S8 into a desktop computer, and a new Gear 360 camera. And of course, Samsung could always have a surprise or two still hidden up its sleeve.
We’ll know for sure in just a few hours when Samsung’s event starts. And of course, The Verge will be on the ground in New York to cover all the action. Here’s how you can follow along:
WHERE TO WATCH
Starting time: San Francisco: 8AM / New York: 11AM / London: 4PM / Berlin 5PM / Moscow: 6PM / Beijing: 11PM / Tokyo: 12AM (March 30th) / Sydney 2AM (March 30th)

I think the smaller one would be more for me. the 5.5" S7 is easily big enough, 6.2 would be getting a little too wide. -
Not in love with the location of the fingerprint reader. Even if it's got to be on the back instead of on the bottom front bezel (and I have mixed feelings about that relocation), it should be beneath the camera instead of to the side of the camera, to aid in reach and to avoid accidentally smudging the camera lens.
The one 2017 fad I don't understand are the rounded corners of screens. Not a deal-breaker for me at all if I was in the market right now...but I just don't understand the benefit.hmscott likes this. -

No real benefit, just looks neat. I have never used the edge menu on my S7E to be honest, so it has no real benefit over the non-edge.hmscott likes this. -
Can't wait to see one in person. Very tempting but the samsung bloat just kills it for me. I'm probably going to hold out for the Pixel 2.

The S8 Plus is very narrow not so wide to make the diagonal 6.2" size, so it might be workable for you.
My Sony Xperia Ultra Z @ 6.4" is much wider and I can use it 1 handed, but it's going to be a personal fit - you'll need to try it.
My S7 Edge seems very small against the UltraZ, and I don't think the S8 Plus is going to "edge" it out either
-
The one thing I really like about the edge menu on my S7E is the contacts edge. I've got my five-most-contacted contacts available to call or text with a single swipe, no matter what app I'm in at the time.hmscott likes this.
