Very excited for these new devices, with a camera that boasts multiple aperture sizes, expect very good low light photos in the dark and super sharp photos in bright light.
Release Date: 16-March-2018 (Pre-orders are live today in many parts of the world)

I'm buying one. The little tweaks this year (fingerprint sensor placement, stereo speakers) are great, and I'm super excited about the variable aperture camera.

Did you know that Bixby went to the kindergarten and learned how to translate text directly from an image when you shoot a pic in some foreign language that has text in it? She also learned a new skill, take a picture of your meal and it will tell you how many calories it has

Bixby is a he...Or her voice is really deep...
I heard that neat translation thing. Wonder if it will perform as well in reality as shown during presentation. -
I don't count calories bruh (1.85 and stable 90kg)
Btw. I wonder how long it will take before this Samsung phone will be denied access to be with you on planes

That won't happen since they didn't change the old tested 3000 and 3500mAH battery . So sad, we're in 2018 and we're getting 2015 capacity batteries
My Xiaomi Redmi 4 which is a 5.2 inch device has a 4100 mAH battery that never dies
and the whole device costs 150 USD

They could increase the size (thickness), but as you know everything must be very thin and flimsy nowadays. Phones have gone same way as the Alienware's. Aka increase the footprint, due they shrinked on the thickness. None make phones so the battery have some space to expand. More like a big Pancake. At least the thickness fits more to the footprint
The way it should be

I'm not interested in Bixby, so I won't actually use that feature. I'm not interested in ARemoji, so I won't use it either. Problem solved.
What I love about the S9 is that the stupid gimmick stuff are optional bits you can just ignore, and the core competency looks amazing. The camera looks superb. The screen looks superb. The fingerprint reader is still there. The headphone jack is still there. microSD expansion is still there. The stereo speakers means no more accidentally muffling the phone with one finger.
Also, the new Dex Dock looks much better. Smarter hardware layout (especially placing the phone horizontally so you can use it as a trackpad AND access the headphone jack while it's docket) and better resolution in desktop mode. -
After seeing Sony, Google Pixel, iPhone abandon the headphone jack, I'm glad Samsung pulled a very pro-consumer move and kept the headphone jack. They may be an option in the future if my iPhone SE gets tired.

Too much optional gimmick stuff though...
And IMO, Huawei desktop mode is better. -
some expansion space for batteries sounds good in principle. Do not care for the thin phones versus battery time.

I like the stereo speakers more than pretty much every other new(-ish) thing. The variable aperture is a laudable achievement technically but apart from pics in low light I don't see it making much difference (then again, if I want to take pics I use my dslr so I'm not exactly the intended customer there), the size of the sensor is what it is after all.
Two things I don't like are the battery (the regular s9 is bigger than the s7 edge I use and it has something like 4-500mAh less on its battery, which is nonsensical) and the fingerprint sensor. One, it's far too close still to the camera so I can see a lot of times of smacking the camera glass with the finger while reaching for the sensor and two...it's on the back. The second is purely a personal preference but I'm not going to get any phone with a fingerprint sensor on the back, it's just not for me. Hopefully next year's phones will have the new sensor under the front glass, that is a technology that is really interesting.
Honestly, the s9 is what the s8 should have been, just like the s7 was what the s6 should have been.TheDantee, Vasudev and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -

Very well said and I kinda agree with your points. I, like you, despite fingerprint sensors on the back because that means every time I wanna check my phone, I have to physically lift it off the table, magically find that fingerprint sensor on the back, unlock it, then put it back. I know, first world problems but it gets very tedious. I dunno who's dumb idea was it to put it on the back. The S7 had the best design IMO, fingerprint reader on the front, good camera, physical buttons for home / back (if I remember correctly)
the problem is dude, what else is there to buy now? We all know that Samsung has some of the best Cameras and unlike you,, I don't have a DSLR nor do I plan on carrying one around, I want something to quickly point and shoot but with decent quality when I'm out and about. The battery is also very disappointing as you mentioned, I hope we get some new phone soon otherwise I'm afraid I have to get this as I need a new phone since I sold my BlackBerry KeyOne a while back.Vasudev likes this. -
I'm confused between Nokia 8 sericco and S9. Atleast S9 has headpone jack. I don't use AR thingy but DeX is somehat helpful if I forget my lappie.
Nokia 8 looks awesome too. -

Major bummer guys:
Samsung S9/S9+ can only record up to 5 minutes of 4K footage
So forget video blogging at 4K on these phones.Vasudev likes this. -
I love this one from the link...
"There are various reasons why Samsung might be limiting the S9's full video recording capabilities. When you record high-resolution video at higher frame rates, the camera captures and writes more data to the storage. As a result, recording in 4K60 usually taxes the system-on-a-chip (SoC), which contains the processor and graphics chip and more, and leads to overheating."
Is this meant as a JOKE?
Afraid that the battery will explode (in a plane)? Maybe they should put in a throttling algorytme aka throttle other task in the background to lower the heat?

I think Mr. Azor was visiting Samsung when they were making these devices.
Now I don't care about 4K Video as I only shoot in FHD @ 60 FPS so I asked a question on the Android forums if it has a 10 minute limit recording on that resolution because I remember in the past they did have such a limit and it made it very difficult for me to make car reviews.
This is my car bro (BMW M4 Convertible with the Competition Package and M Performance Exhaust

We are in 2018, bruh
"By capping recording time at five minutes, the S9 essentially stops all processing and data-writing to prevent a meltdown or unexpected shutdown."
"On the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and X, you can record videos in 4K resolution at 60 fps for as long as you want — so long as you have enough storage."Vasudev likes this. -

Because:
In my BMW M4, it has a wireless charging pad under the arm rest, it will only fit phones of the size of the iPhone 8 (not plus) or up to iPhone X (I have a case for the iPhone X and I tried it, it fits) BUT I want to have the dual cameras for the bokeh effect so if I go with the 8 Plus, then it won't fit in my BMW, thus, I have to get the X to fit and to have both cameras -

Well that sucks. I was seriously considering S9 but now I'm unsure.
Well just tried 4k @30 on iphone 7 for 5 mins and it is really hot but didn't enforce throttling alg. -
Most likely will the CrApple-X be the replacement for my old little 4 inches. Large screen in a small format. I do not like big phones. And the selection is limited if you want a small phone with big screen.Vasudev likes this.

I know the feeling. Bigger phones are a nuisance. Often its ticklish when I put in my trouser's pocket and it will harm my freezer which houses the next generation BGA lovers.Papusan likes this.

Phoenix: I think exynos can handle standard 4k video capture. But SD 845 records at ultraHD Premium with HDR, dunno if its taxing or actually works.
-
The Exynos 9810 has it's bandwidth pipeline increased (wider arch) also the new M3 cores are very fast in the IPC with Single core performance (They beat the full custom Kryo 200 the SD82x's performance cores's Floating point IPC, even SD8x5 yes the 845 reaches it but doesn't beat it or Exynos 8xxx can't because it's not based off the ARM A73 and instead a full design they needed that because SD810 disaster of trying for 64Bit by killing the faster and super cool SD805 SoC - Nexus 6) but the downside is the GPU Mali G72 vs G71, the old G71 itself wasn't that good and overheated & the new CPU/GPU/SoC power consumption, see below.
So they went conservative this time around for the G72 by cutting off 2 cores to match the power envelope. Also the CPU's clockspeed is reduced as well from the press release from 2.9 to 2.7GHz, Plus ya'll know how Intel Turbo boost 2.0 works like all 4x speed, 3x and then 1core now this 9810 also like that it has mutiple Turbos - Only one core is 2.7 if all 4 cores then it's 1.8 you can't just magically gain performance in this small area. The power figures are 3.1-3.5 and for GPU intense tasks at 4.5 - 5.2W vs the Snapdragon's - 1.0-1.1W, on the 835, 845 but needs testing. Also the SD845's Adreno 630 drivers are very good, super powerful because it's not an ARM design it's full in house and Spectra 280 ISP (co-built with Sony iirc, the reason they are promoting it so much about as "World's first 4K HDR recording on mobile" and the SDR to HDR increase on the Xperia XZ2's FHD panel that's really awesome SDR to HDR is like 60 to 120Hz, Plus they bumped up the Slo-mo to 1080P 960FPS but from 0.2 to 0.1 recording still a feat - A shame that device lacks the headphone jack despite the massive portfolio of Sony's Hi Res DAP and Audiophile market, The company that made the legendary MDR EX1000 gives a run for money against the SE846, IE800 and CIEMs, sigh. Also lost the DNC- Digital Noise Cancellation, no idea why) is very powerful and the Adreno is very very fast, it reaches A11's faux custom GPU marketing and maintains efficiency unlike the Apple's masquerade show. Also adding the CAF - Code Aurora Forum for Snapdragon SRC development it adds continuous invaluable wealth to the custom ROM scene like EAS scheduling etc, superb custom ROM scene. Very sad that the SD versions of the Samsung phones are locked to hell unlike their Exynos brothers.
So I'm guessing that Samsung capped the CPU performance for 3 reasons here, One the CPU being very fast required more power, Two the GPU power consumption balancing with the CPU & Three the SD845's performance vs the 9810's performance matching, If you make one device with 4K HDR (US version SD845) and the other Exynos without it, it'd be drastic. So I think they decided to switch that feature off or not market it, Plus add the new DRAM in the ISOCELL sensor (heat-up due to buffer write needed for the high speed recording) of the new S9/+ I think that's also playing some role here..
Talking about the A series chips, we all know how "Powerful" they are - Drop to 600MHz on the A8 from 1400MHz - battery fiasco, not just old chips but they throttle so fast the A11 drops 40% and goes to 60% when doing continuous workload and the SD835 maintains at 90% of it's clock performance. Adding the iOS "magical" animation and the battery gimping it's perfect for Apple to faux all that performance claims, yeah the die size is massive and expensive chip but there are significant trade-offs. Unlike our LGA/rPGA system if these things don't maintain consistent perf with super good heat dissipation it's a bad SoC or Device. A small observation, look how the A series chips are packed in an iPhone, they don't have space/design to transfer heat, despite the metal chassis on old phones, damn even the new ones, look at SD810 and post SoCs. Extra rip off from Apple corp, mediocre and marketing pays off. Money speaks, When you have shillers what else you need.. Like blogs, youtubers, fangirls.
Don't even start on that Display mutilation, abomination called Notch. Already ruined by these rounded corners, Curved edges, 18:9 gimmick. Shame that Apple is failing even at form over function
Finally all these GB and Manhattan tests they all are Synthetic. The real world performance is different, Plus from my experience with Android Custom ROM scene since a long time, There are numerous recognized developers I came accross who don't bank on the benchmarks but instead on the real world cases, Best example is Sultanxda that guy is a god, he found out the SD821's OP3T's high clockspeed bug (which crashes) on the perf core, Kryo 200 and downclocked it, hardcoded it. So yeah there's literal clockspeed cut here but see for yourselves how his Unofficial Lineage OS is ranked #1 in performance, UX and everything

Sometime ago I bought a S7 Edge to replace my iPhone 5s. Since them the screen broke 3 times. First time Samsung gave me warranty and the other two I had to pay from my pocket so I believe the money I spent could buy two S7s. I believe Samsung curved glass is very weak and it's a huge problem. Just my opinion but until Samsung continues to make the curved screen I cannot recommend their phones. I really regret my S7 Edge purchase. -
I was promised, in 2005, that we would have bendable, self-charging, bullet resistant phones by now. Its 2018! Where is my frag proof phone! Samsung, You are falling behind, get with the times! Nokia has phones with laser beams attached to their heads!
