My goal is to pick up a tablet, something for reading articles, youtube, forums, magazines, podcasts, etc. Not even any email or games or anything. I hear stories that updates make the older units unusable as far as iPads go.
Is it feasible to buy like a first gen iPad or older android tablet that would still do this? I dont expect it to be unrealistically snappy or anything, but... would it be reasonable? I dont want to be hating it because its horribly slow, but obviously i want as large as i can get as cheap as i can get or I would go buy a brand new one... but then alot of its power would be a waste i think for what i want to do...

Sorry, got sidetracked on life.
I laptop for most things. I'd say reading PDFs, surfing, and youtube type stuff.
I can spend money on it, I just dont know if its worth $600 dollars to do just that. I guess I was trying to figure out what that would cost me, those features to see if it was wortht he expenditure. -
Is 50-100 possible for what I want it to do?
-
Not really, I mean sure there are tablets out there that you can get for that price, but they're that cheap for a reason.
I'd go with a Nexus 7 or one of the newer Asus Zenpad 8
You can get the Zenpad 8 for about 200 bucks, the Nexus 7 can be had for about 150 or so depending on sales, but I think it's 180 at it's normal price.
The only issue with the Nexus 7 at this point is that it's older and it's starting to show its age, but since it's a Nexus device you can still get the latest OS, so it should stay current for a little while longer. -

I've seen the Nexus 7 as low as 150, but 160-170 is its normal price. I still think it is a far competent choice than the cheapo 100 dollar tablets. The fact it is a Nexus devices is already bonus points, and a WUXGA 7" screen, good battery life, still has good performance and 2 GB RAM.
