I did this on my Galaxy S8 and it's like I bought a new phone, standby time is now insane the battery barely drops now...
1) Enable Developer Mode (keep tapping on Software Info / Build Number 7 times until it's enabled)
2) Go into developer options which will now appear at the bottom of the settings menu
3) Scroll down all the way to the end and click on Inactive Apps
4) You will see many apps showing the status Active, just tap on it once to set it to inactive!
5) Try to connect to 2.4GHz Wireless Networks when possible on your smartphone as the 5GHz networks usually have worse wireless range and thus the phone tries hard to acquire a signal leading to increased battery usage. I get much better battery life now even with WiFi on while on the 2.4GHz Network
6) Turn off NFC if you don't use it as it's enabled on almost all devices by default.
7) Uninstall/disable Microsoft OneDrive and see your battery increase dramatically. What I noticed that even if the app is not running, I would get a notification occasionally from Android saying "OneDrive is running in the background" and it causes a big battery drain. I tried a lot to find a way to fix this or prevent it from running in the background but with no luck and even though I do use it to grab newly added files to my computer quickly on my cell phone, I would rather live without this feature than have it drain my battery severely. Again, this is one of those golden tips that made my battery level seem like it keep from a different world! Try it for yourself and see.
8) Uninstall/Disable FaceBook and replace it with an app called Metal. Not only does it allow you to chat with your Facebook friends directly from the app without having to install a separate Messenger app for Facebook, it also uses way little battery compared to Facebook.
9) Turn down your phone's screen resolution down to 1080P from the display settings. See: 1080p vs 1440p: How much does 1440p really affect battery life?
10) Turn off Mobile Data is Always active. When connected to WiFi, you don't need Mobile Data to be active as that will drain your battery faster.
You need to enable Developer options then disable it from there:
![]()
The only thing I don't like about Metal is the navbar section it adds but this can easily be disabled in the app settings so don't forget to do that.
That's it, this will not disable that app or anything, all we are doing here is not allowing them to run in the background when you don't want them to, they'd still work if you manually launch them. I was shocked to see how many apps were running in the background.
Obviously, only disable the apps that you don't really need to run in the background. Personally, I just kept Gmail, Whatsapp, Google Maps, etc. active, the rest are all inactive.
I've charged my phone to 100% like 2 hours ago and now I am looking at it, it's still at 98%! This is insane! Previously, it would be like 85% by now!

Does this work on S7? I believe Samsung Members app does a similar thing.
One thing that bugs me is, I always set background apps to max of 3, but those settings aren't persistent i.e. after a reboot it goes to default OS recommended values -
I think this really depends on your apps using. I'm a bit of a minimalist but that is what i get without using this setting. 2 hours 2% drain.

It does work on my S7 Edge in the sense that the option to inactivate each app is there in developer tools. But Samsung's device maintenance app does this automatically (at least by default), and I found that most of my apps were already set to inactive.

On Android 6 and under in developer mode you can select how many active apps to keep in memory, select background process limit, I set mine to zero to see what happens.

ok I will bro
One question have you tried pixelfilter?
I use this trick on a LG G5 and my screen on time max brightness in battery saver mode is 9 hours which is insane because the thing is a phone not a computer why would i be on it 9 hours a day surfing the web.lol
However It's still nice have that extra juice thank you again -
An app called Booster on the appstore does that too, it calls it "standby" but does the same, pretty cool.
Thanks!Vasudev likes this. -
Do you know how to root android phones. I checked the guide at xda forums and one thing bugging me is TWRP requiring the ROM files on sd card or something. I don't have a spare sd card so I am thinking if TWRP can directly flash to ROM w/o SD card.
The phone is old and slow on jellybean. Phone is Samsung Core prime sm-360H. Tried Kingroot, kingoroot and iRoot all failed unable to gain root access. -
No I am sorry, the KeyOne is my first Android phone, and it is unrootable.Vasudev likes this.

So do notifications still work if we leave them "inactive"?
-
I've been doing this for a while, but recently - with the last 3 updates, only the middle one allowed me to adjust active/inactive, the 2 month ago update disabled the feature and it was reenabled last month, and disabled with the last update again, and just checked now - and it's working again - I haven't seen an update... weird.
With an update all the apps are "active" again, and I guess it takes a while before you can adjust them again. I guess I'll need to debug this next update
I disable most notifications by default, I only enable a few important ones, with flash "light" - no sound notifications - and no lock screen notifications. I also make "active" the apps that I take notifications from...why would you want to "inactive"ate apps you want notifications from anyway? -
That's the entire reason I want it. If I don't use an app all at that much, that's when I want a notification. Not the apps that I use frequently and see what's going on anyhow multiple times a day. Like I have multiple credit cards that I don't use that much, and different apps for each. But I like to get a notification if there's been a charge made on it, or other significant changes. So something I use maybe once a month, I don't want it running all the time, just to tell me when there's something significant to look at.
-
I see, well, it should be easy to test, right? Some apps / notifications easier than others of course.
It would be nice if the app would run when a notification came in, but when would it become inactive again?, when you clear the notification?
Even with inactive set, I still see quite a few applications closed when I use Greenify to "Hibernate now", so it's not completely effective, maybe the apps are becoming "active" even if set "inactive" by handling "notifications" even though I've disabled showing them?
Anyway, I actually almost ran out of power today, but I have settings such that it ran and calls answered even at 2%, plugged it in a 1%... back to 100% with fast charge in short order.
Love the Samsung S7 Edge

Hmm, I just noticed that Samsung Maintenance in Settings actually lets you set apps to sleep - never run in the background - the ones I have set I recall doing via Maintenance runs before, but I have a lot more set to be inactive... I guess we need to do both settings? I wonder if this option is the same as what Greenify is doing, maybe the Samsung setting will do better with not running Samsung apps in the background that Greenify (without root) does? Something new to tune

Yeah, active when notification comes in and then inactive once you close the notification would be good. I love my S7 edge too. I just don't like the "edge swipe" features. Thought I'd like it but not a fan. Too many inadvertent swipes of the edge apps when holding the phone.hmscott likes this.

Well, this is the thing CyanogenMod roms(aka lineage os roms) offer since the starting. My motog falcon had around 1.5 hours of gaming time(on the stock lollipop 5.1).
The next day i flashed CM13 nightly build and just seen drastic improvement. The phones whose performance have been drastically increased with these roms are all samsung phones, oneplus, nokia, and those nubia phones.
Give these os a try. And your life will change

Ultra Male: I have been tweaking my old GP Samsung core prime for a while now, I used privacy guard or similar app to turn off Keep Awake,Run in background and start at Boot parameters for non-essential user apps and I reduced 300MB of RAM and phone was on standby for 12 hrs with 1% drain.

I have a Rooted Note 9 128GB Exynos variant...
I use a combination of Greenify + Naptime + Servicely + SD maid (to keep it clean) + L Speed which tweaks performance and battery optimization
Using Goodlock 2018.. it have a application called [Routines] it will help you to do everything automated (like for example.. When Wifi strength goes under 5%... it will turn off wifi automatically) which I wouldn't have to worry if I got away and forgot to turn off my Wifi
I'm using a Custom ROM with a Custom Kernel which allows me to undervolt my GPU voltage and OC my CPU speed over the limit.. I'm at 2.9GHz and soon will it push to 3GHz
and yes... I'm Rooted with Magisk
I also use something called (ACC) - Advanced Charging Controller... which will help my battery life span to be as healthy as possible
since it built-in battery so we can't replace the battery easily
Read this... and you will know what I mean. . http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/how_to_prolong_lithium_based_batteries/
Rooted my Note 9 since day 1 of usage... I don't care about warranty
Even though I have put my display settings to the maximum resolution (by default out of the box they set it lower) + AOD and yet I have 1 day left while on 67% of battery
I'm really enjoying my Note 9... it is awesome
+ I have a silicon lottery..
I got ASV 10
I guess that's why I enjoy higher OC on GPU + CPU with lower battery consumption since I have got it undervolted (-62.5mv on GPU and -93.75mv on CPU) that's why the higher is the ASV... the higher you can undervolt + the higher OC
-
Brings me back to my earlier Android days when I ran full custom everything and got ridiculous battery life compared to everyone else. Sadly my VZW Note5 is still un-rootable. I used to use Greenify and Xposed framework. I STILL miss Xposed to this day... RIP my volume rocker song skipping function when long pressed.Vasudev and 6.|THE|1|BOSS|.9 like this.

Xposed was a golden era really
but since it have alot of issues on every new major android OS.. xposed became more used in older phone which usually stuck with an older version of android OS... it will always break the safety net checkup
which means you can't use Samsung Health,Google Pay, Samsung Pay, Bank applications,etc...
-
Just use L Speed (Includes Greenify and other features[Don't touch battery optimisation crap in L Speed they break auto brightness feature in latest update]) and control Services using SD Maid (basic or Pro) and Privacy guard. Toggle unwanted apps from ON to off For Boot,Keep Awake and Run in background to free up 1GB RAM and decrease cold boot time by 2-4 secs.
As for ACC, disable that and let the battery firmware judge what's best. Samsung batteries lasts for 2 years on rough usage. In your case Note 9 will last until Note XV arrives with bendable tech and Tony Stark's Iron Man tech for HUD and armor.6.|THE|1|BOSS|.9 likes this. -

For L speed. I use the beta versions and I don't suffer from any issues and also L speed includes governor tweaks for (Schedutil)
which is awesome
as it wasn't included in the stable releases
Good to know about Privacy Guard..
never heard of it before.
About saving 1GB of RAM... I mean... why?? We have 6GB RAM.. and I want to use it all.. an unused RAM is a wasted RAM
I use a Magisk module called (Swap Torpedo) which will make much more smoother performance even when you use up all the available RAM... it will still be smoothie
how to use all the available RAM?? By keeping 20+ Apps opened... which is unrealistic
Yes, I agree Samsung firmware knows better about handling the battery but ACC doesn't conflict with Samsung firmware battery management
ACC will actually prolong more the life span of the battery than Samsung can do due to it have cooling down mechanism and voltage monitoring whenever there's spikes
even the developer of ACC was amazed about Note 9 battery management
here....
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=78129547&postcount=1656
(Look at Da-BOSS post... that's my name on XDA forums
)
And I don't plan to buy a new smartphone for the next 4~5 years
Note 4 that I still have it till today have been working greatly for 4 years now... and when I heard about Note 9 specifications... I waited for it because it was having the most significant positive impact from features to specifications to battery compared to Note 4
And also.. I use immersive mode since Note 4 and also on Note 9 so that I don't have to suffer from burn-in screen
it is been 4 years with Note 4 and it doesn't have any kind of screen burn... and I expect Note 9 to break Note 4 record of never having a screen burn and problem free on the long run... as I'm pretty sure technology evolved between Note 4 era and Note 9 era
What I mean about problem free.. is Hardware issues that's unfixable.. but for software issues... well... I take a custom ROM from 4PDA(Russian forum) or XDA and I tweak it or rebuilt it according to my needs... & a custom Kernel from XDA through source codes and I modify or optimize it personally for my own need

L speed already include ZRAM optimisation or swap file optimisation.
I believe Less is more is very true these days.
I don't believe unused RAM is wasted opportunity. Apps should use RAM as required and don't overuse it since its expensive in terms of power because fully loaded RAM uses 1-2W than 0.6-0.8W on half filled RAM.
I thought you were tweaking current and Amps for battery. ACC is good but every 6 months turn it off and charge the battery to 100% so that battery wear is evenly distributed. I believe you understand it perfectly! If you rapidly charge and limit charge cap to 80% the battery will last for 3-4 years w/o wear and tear. Once its disabled, you'll see the wear level ramping up slowly(yeah very slowly..) I observed it on Lenovo laptops wherein I limited charge to 60% and after 5 year and full charge and one discharge to 0% the wear level increased from 0% to 12-18%. I turned it off and wear level hasn't ramped up.
I think you can limit charge using adb dumpsys as well.
Run adb shell and run vdc fstrim dotrim and if you have super OCD you can see instant responsiveness in performance.
Don't TRIM it regularly but every 3-4 days should be fine!6.|THE|1|BOSS|.9 likes this. -

Yes
I know L speed have swap optimization but... it doesn't disable it
it will only lower it and I want it to disable it because even when you half filled RAM it will use swap (which is slow) and produce lag... that's why I went with Swap Torpedo which will disable Swap mechanism and have smooth performance even if it near to full RAM.. see what I mean?
Yes.. I plan to keep my Note 9 for the next 4~5 years
and yes I understand you perfectly related to battery life span and I already know about it
Related to TRIM... I always trim it once weekly through Tasker
