I never knew about this before only after buying my iPhone 6S 128GB Space Gray did I know that there are 2 diff. chips, one from Samsung and the other from TSMC.
Luckily, my phone has the TSMC chip which is supposed to have better battery life. My wife's iPhone 6S Plus 128GB Rose Gold has the Samsung chip unfortunately although we bought them from the same store on the same day.
There is no way you could tell which chip your phone has before actually opening the box and checking with some app.
To find out which chip your phone has, download "Lirum Device Info", I downloaded the paid version because I am allergic to ads, there is a Lite version which is free, then when you open the app at the bottom you will see under model which chip you have! N71mAP and N66mAP are TSMC chips, N71AP and N66AP are Samsung
My phone's model is MKQT2ZP/A and the chip is N71mAP

It's not really that big deal... at least not for most people. When running highly-demanding software, like high end games, the Taiwan Semiconductor version is going to get better battery life. In other situations, like web or email, the difference will be small.

I think "Chipgate" or whatever it's called now is ridiculous. Sure it's quite bizarre that Apple contracted out 2 OEMs to fab the chip, but even more strange that it came out with 2 different slight designs. In the end, I think many reviewers found VERY little difference, so honestly it doesn't matter.

I just got a call from a friend today telling me that he bought a new iPhone 6S from one of the carriers here in Dubai and when he was using it, he felt it was very warm. So he checked using this app and it was a Samsung chip. He complained to the carrier but all they said is they will send it for repairs and it would take 4 business days to be repaired! He was very mad that his brand new phone is going to have to go for repairs and maybe even be dismantled.
Remember this? Could it have anything to do that maybe those iPhones were also having the Samsung chip which is causing the overheating?
iPhone 6s overheating for some, disabling LED flash -
This whole chipgate thing is a joke. It's a negligible difference in real life performance between them and phones these days get hot, its a fact of life. Seriously...

Wow, in this test it shows they are very similar unlike what other sites claim. I think some sites want to be drama queens just to get a lot of attention it seems. -
Why do you think so many sites do *gate stuff? It's pure click bait, nothing more.Tsunade_Hime and Spartan@HIDevolution like this.

This +1000000. Even Bendgate was really dumb, Apple even said the amount of bent iPhone plusses was a really small percentage of the total amount sold. A true scandal would be like Apple collecting your personal data and then selling it to the black market.LanceAvion likes this. -
Sounds like something Microsoft would do lmao!Spartan@HIDevolution likes this.

At least the bendgate resulted in sturdier followup models.
My phone has Samsung chip but so far I haven't had problems with battery or excessive heating. Apparently my usage isn't heavy enough

And is there a way you can tell before buying it?

unfortunately not, as I mentioned earlier, me and my wife bought them from the same store on the same day, she got the Rose Gold iPhone 6S Plus and I got the Space Gray iPhone 6S, both of them 128GB. Mine is using a TSMC chip and hers is using a Samsung chip. No way you can tell.
I don't know if this helps or not, but my phone is made in Hong Kong not China, and the product Code is MKQT2ZP/A -
Humm, well then you can tell by checking where the iphone was made... Is there anywhere in the box that it says where it was made?
-

oh darn, I don't know why I was thinking it was made in Hong Kong I just checked the box it says "Assembled in China"
So now it's even harder to tell because I was thinking that maybe the Hong Kong manufactured ones were sporting the TSMC chip.

I'm still using a 5S, but is the MLC/TLC lottery still a thing with the 6S as it was in the 6?

didn't hear about it, how do I check? -

Here is mine, what do you think this is MLC or TLC? Also, I know that for PCs MLC is better / longer lasting / more reliable, how about phones?
-
I would say download and install http://www.pgyer.com/IOKitBrowser
Check to see if it says 3 bits per cell (TLC) or 2 bits per cells (MLC)
I'm guessing you have TLC.
iPhone 6S / 6S Plus Chipgate, what chip do you have?
