I just purchased a Toshiba U205-S5034 with XP/1024/100G. Why am I running 97 processes???? I looked at the Task Manager and there was only about 240 left for memory. What can I do to remove unneces. processes?
Thanks to anyone that can help me.

download and install toolbarcop, in addition to deleting toolbars and whatnot there is also an option to delete startup processes. It will remove the registry entries for them instead of just disabling them. My guess is most are bloatware processes, but be careful of which you get rid of.

Thanks Airman....but what should I look for when I get to the registry? I apologize but I need the help.

Go to start menu -> select run -> Put in msconfig and press enter -> go to start up and deselect worthless programs.
That helped me alot. there is a guide to how to use that in the thread below

Just be careful what you choose not to start up. -
ok...I'll try that.
Thanks...Z -
Also you must be aware of what programs "talk" (for lack of a better word) to other programs. Shutting down one might crash the system because it's buddy program went out the window. classical talking programs: nero, norton, creative, etc.

Have a read of the optimising your notebook thread
Most likely it will be bloat. I had 65 when I got my laptop. Not as extreme as yours, but... -
"L"...thanks for the info-tip!! I'm go'n for it right now
...you're my hero (only if it works...lol)

I had the same problems, spent some time in MSCONFIG, the start up tab, and in Regedit, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run, first export the keys you don't think you need then delete them. If you are not sure leave it. I think I had mine down to about 45 processes without removing "windows" features.
If you are running Vista don't be suprised if you only have 30% of your RAM free, that's how Vista works. If you have the memory it will use it.
Toshiba really loads up on the crap-ware. I was able to clean my system up in about 30 minutes so it wasn't so bad. -
thanks dragon...it took me over 3.5 hrs to get this stuff out and now I still have approx. 56 processes. I will try what you suggested.
-
"L"...thanks again...after close to 3.5 hours I am down to 57 processes. If you know of any other ideas to get down to approx 35...let me know.
-
hey dragon...what do I do when I get to the "Run" file????
-
You can also turn off some unused/underused services to reduce the processes http://www.jasonn.com/turning_off_unnecessary_services_on_windows_xp
