I just bought a Toshiba Satellite A105-S101. 60gb HD (5400 rpm) with 256 mb PC4200 DDR2 SDRAM, expandable up to 2gb.
My question is that I would like to run a few games, with Half Life 2 being the one that would require the most processor. It came with a ATI Mobility RADEON XPRESS 200M 64-128mb card. From what I've read, it's not the best card, but it'll do.
Would upgrading my memory from 256 to maybe 1gb help it? I had already planned on running the game on the lowest settings. I've built a few desktops, but I've never taken apart a laptop.
How hard is it to change the memory on the laptop? What would happen if I left the 256 stick in and threw a 512 or 1gb in with it? Would there be a conflict?
Sorry to ask such simplistic questions.

I just purchased the same laptop and it will arrive on Thursday. I also wanted to upgrade my RAM. I ordered 2, 1G sticks of DDR2 533MHZ RAM from Newegg for $63.99 a piece. according to another member I will also be able to run the notebook in dual channel mode with the identical RAM. This gives a little performance boost.
The Radeon Xpress 200M is not a separate card but an integrated video chipset on the MB. It shares 64-128M of the PC4200 RAM. It is suppose to be the best integrated video chipset on the market but not really made for serious gaming.
I'm going to try a variety of games and report back by this weekend. -
I installed 2 1GB sticks of identical RAM in this laptop and everything seems to be working fine. Do I have to do something special to turn on dual-channel or will the laptop automatically boot into that mode?
